TIGERS SQUEEZE BY CENTRAL CATHOLIC,
 MOVE ON TO SEMIFINALS

(5/9/12) The one-day delay for the WPIAL Quarterfinals was well worth the wait as the Tigers gained a measure of revenge for last season’s exit in the same round to Central Catholic.  Turning the tables, the Tigers recorded an electrifying 3-2 victory over the Vikings in a match that included an epic third singles win by senior Willie Suhrie that decided the contest between the two rivals.  With the home win, the Tigers now advance to the WPIAL Semi-Final Round.  The first point of the match came from freshman Eric Huang and junior Connor Goodman who dispatched Ted Larkin and Graham Sides in straight sets at number two doubles.   Sophomore Stephen Chuirazzi and senior Steve Klein at number one doubles defeated Kevin Petnuch and Spencer Bergman, also in straight sets.   Following Central wins at the top two singles slots to tie the match at two apiece, the stage was set for an outstanding contest at number three singles to settle the playoff clash.

With the other eight courts cleared, senior Willie Suhrie fought tooth and nail with Central’s Kevin Wlahofsky in a three-set thriller.  After losing the first set 3-6, Suhrie bounced back with confidence and a great array of shots to even the score in the second set, 6-1.    The third set, contested in windy and rainy conditions, saw each point from both sides cheered raucously by teammates and team moms alike.  Suhrie fell behind 0-3 then rallied to go up 5-4 and serve for the match.  Whalofsky broke him and then Suhrie broke back at 6-5 before Whalofsky squared it again at 6-6.  In the deciding tie break, Suhrie jumped out front 5-1 only to see Whalofsky come back with three straight points to make it 5-4.  Suhrie then reeled off the next two points to clinch the exciting win for the Tigers.  With the quarterfinal win secured, the 17-3 Tigers continue their playoff run with a Semi-Final match Thursday afternoon against the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils.  Starting time for the contest, to be played at Sewickley Academy, is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
