NA ADVANCES TO PIAA TOURNAMENT WITH WIN OVER OAKLAND CATHOLIC

To listen to an archived broadcast of the game, click here!

(11/3/12) A determined Lady Tigers Volleyball Team shot down the Oakland Catholic Eagles, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon to earn a trip to the PIAA Tournament.  North Allegheny earned the victory over Oakland Catholic with set scores of 25-13, 25-13, 20-25 and 26-24.   NA’s win in the WPIAL Class AAA Consolation game extends the Tigers season into the state tournament which begins on Tuesday night.  The Lady Tigers will face the District 10 champion in the opening round.

Following a heartbreaking loss to Fox Chapel in the WPIAL semifinals, the Lady Tigers appeared to be driven and clearly focused on the task at hand against Oakland Catholic.  North Allegheny stormed out of the gates and flustered the Eagles for a pair of 25-13 victories in sets one and two.  Junior Ashley Leto had the Midas touch on this day as she propelled the Tigers toward victory.  Leto repeatedly lofted soft tip shots over the Oakland Catholic blockers for several key points. The 5-9 outside hitter posted an unofficial 12 kills in the game and was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

In the third set, a previously discouraged Oakland Catholic team began to find their groove.  Behind eight kills from senior Suzanne Gloekler, the Eagles topped the Tigers 25-20 to force a fourth set.  The Eagles soared to a 23-19 lead in the fourth set, but their momentum came to screeching halt in the late stages.  Kills by Leto, junior Erin Swarz and senior Ava Mosbacher, along with an Oakland Catholic hitting error, brought the Tigers back to a 23-23 tie.  A service error by NA gave the Eagles a 24-23 lead, the serve, and chance to send the match a fifth set.  However, the Tigers persevered by scoring the next three points for the victory.  Senior setter Maura Nolan began the rally with a perfect dump in the middle of the Eagles defense to tie the score 24-24.  Nolan and Meg Morningstar combined for a block to pull NA ahead, 25-24.  Then Mosbacher gave the Lady Tigers the victory with a well-placed tip to send North Allegheny to the state tournament with a 26-24 win in the set and a 3-1 match victory.

Also key to the NA victory were the NA defensive specialists as senior Rachel Samuels and libero Kristen Mitchell, among others, helped the Tigers handle the big swings of Gloekler and the Eagles.  With the win, North Allegheny improves to 17-4 overall and will take on the District 10 Champion at Seneca High School in Erie, PA on Tuesday night in the PIAA Tournament.

NA FALLS IN HEARTBREAKER TO FOX CHAPEL IN
WPIAL SEMIFINALS

(11/1/12) The North Allegheny Lady Tigers dropped a heartbreaker to Fox Chapel on Thursday night as the Foxes edged out NA, 3-2, to advance to the WPIAL Championship on Saturday night.  The Lady Tigers came to within a point of the title game twice in set four, but in the end the Foxes rallied in dramatic fashion for a 29-27 set victory and ultimately claimed the match with a win in the fifth and decisive set.  The Foxes moved on with set scores of 19-25, 25-23, 24-26, 29-27 and 15-13.

The atmosphere was electric in the Chartiers Valley gymnasium and the play on the floor equaled the enthusiasm in the crowd.  Each set was a nail-biter and the action was dominated by the diving, last ditch digs by both teams.  For North Allegheny, libero Kristen Mitchell, seniors Maura Nolan and Rachel Samuels, and junior Ashley Leto covered the floor from corner to corner to extend plays.  To their credit, Fox Chapel’s libero Marcy Meinert, juniors Betsy Slagl and Megan Hollingsworth, and senior setter Alyson Hess displayed tremendous defense with their diving efforts to keep plays alive.

In set one, junior Jessica Samuels collected three aces to help the Tigers break a 19-19 tie and roll off six straight points for the 25-19 win.  Sophomore Meg Morningstar was strong in the middle with four kills and Danielle Wall notched three kills in the opening set.  For Wall, it was just the beginning of an outstanding night for the junior who rose to the occasion numerous times to lift the Tigers to big points throughout the night, collecting 12 kills and four aces along the way.  For her efforts, Wall was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Match.

The Foxes got even in set two with a tough 25-23 win, led by senior Riley Herrmann who posted five of her 18 kills for the match.  In the third set, the Tigers rallied from a 24-21 deficit with five straight points for a 26-24 set victory.  Late blocks by Nolan and Morningstar, along with the serves of Ashley Leto lifted the Tigers to the thrilling comeback in the set.

In set four, the Tigers held leads of 24-22 and 25-24, needing just one more point to advance to the WPIAL Championship.  However, the Foxes’ Michaela Patsko was instrumental in keeping FC’s hopes alive with a block and two kills in the sets most critical moments for a 29-27 win.  The Lady Tigers fell behind 5-2 in the fifth set before storming back behind the blocks, kills and well-placed tips by junior Erin Swarz.  Late in the action, Morningstar gave the Tigers a 13-12 lead with a timely kill, but it was Patsko again who led the Foxes back with two straight kills and a match ending ace to cap the win for Fox Chapel, 15-13.

Despite the loss, North Allegheny still has a chance to reach the PIAA playoffs if they can defeat the Oakland Catholic Eagles on Saturday in the Class AAA Consolation match.  That contest will begin at noon on Saturday from Chartiers Valley High School and will be broadcast live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

LADY TIGERS POUNCE ON PETERS TOWNSHIP, 3-0

(10/31/12) The North Allegheny Girls Volleyball Team advanced to the semifinals of the Class AAA playoffs with a 3-0 victory over the Peters Township Indians on Wednesday night.  The Tigers earned set wins of 25-13 and 25-19 to open the action, then capped off an extraordinary rally in their third set for a 27-25 victory and a sweep of the Indians.  North Allegheny trailed 24-19 in set three before scoring eight of the last nine points to claim the win.  The Lady Tigers will next face section rival Fox Chapel in the semifinals.

Peters Township appeared bewildered to start the contest as North Allegheny ran circles around the Indians for a 14-2 lead in set one.  The tone was set early in the match by the Tigers middle of Meg Morningstar and Erin Swartz, neutralizing the skills of Peters Township’s 6-1 middle hitter, Lauren Belack.  Morningstar and Swarz combined for seven blocks and urged the Tigers on to a dominating 25-13 victory in the opening set.  For her efforts in shutting down Belack and laying the ground work for the night, Morningstar was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

In set two, Danielle Wall and Katie Humes hammered the Indians repeatedly to open up a 19-9 lead.  Wall, who finished the night with eight kills, collected six of them in the second set.  Thanks to the accurate back-sets by senior Maura Nolan, Humes torched Peters Township with high velocity swings that saw her collect four kills on the night.  While the Indians did rally with a 7-1 run to cut NA’s lead to four points, the Lady Tigers held on for a 25-19 win.

In the first two sets the Lady Tigers pounced on the Indians for huge early leads, but in set three it would be the Indians who led throughout.  With Belack, outside hitter Shiloh Simonson and setter Kelly Johnson finally breaking through for some consistent points, the Indians built a 24-19 lead and appeared destined to force a fourth set.   However, North Allegheny rallied behind junior Ashley Leto and senior Ava Mosbacher who each finished with 10 kills.  The duo was clutch, helping the Tigers roll off eight of the final nine points scored to put away the Indians for good, 27-25.  Nolan and Swartz combined on a block for the final point of the night.

With the win, North Allegheny improves to 16-2 overall while the Section 3 Champions, Peters Township, falls to 16-3.  The Lady Tigers continue their run through the playoffs with a semifinal match-up against Fox Chapel.  The contest will be held at Chartiers Valley High School with play starting at approximately 7:30 pm.  You can hear all the action live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

NA BOUNCES HEMPFIELD IN FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS, 3-0

(10/24/12) The Lady Tigers won their opening round bout with the Hempfield Spartans, 3-0, on Wednesday night to advance to the quarterfinals of the Class AAA Girls Volleyball playoffs.  North Allegheny toppled the Spartans with set wins of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-20.

The Lady Tigers jumped on Hempfield in set one for a comfortable 22-12 lead behind a flurry of kills by juniors Danielle Wall and Ashley Leto.  Wall ended the night with five kills, two aces, and 11 digs while Leto posted a team high 11 kills and added another 10 digs defensively.  Despite a brief run of points by Hempfield on kills by Lea Scozio and Erin Demarrais, the Lady Tigers coasted to a 25-16 win in the opening stanza.

The second set proved to be more of a battle with the 15th seeded Spartans as the teams sparred to a 12-12 tie.  North Allegheny grabbed control of the action thanks to the play of junior Erin Swarz who notched four kills and two blocks in the set to pull ahead for a 25-19 victory.  Wall and Leto combined for five kills along the way to urge the Tigers ahead in the back-and-forth set.

The third and final set was very similar to the preceding one with the teams trading barbs for a 14-14 tie until senior Katie Humes delivered three kills and two blocks to swing the pendulum in NA’s direction.  Humes finished the contest with four kills and three blocks and was pivotal to the Lady Tigers 25-20 victory in set three.  As is their typical style, the match was far from a one-woman show and NA was urged to the win with a defensive spark from Kristen Mitchell, who posted 15 digs, and setter Maura Nolan who distributed the ball for 26 assists.  Making a healthy return last week from a stress fracture in her foot and not missing a beat, Nolan continued her outstanding play against Hempfield on Wednesday night and was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

North Allegheny improves their overall record to 15-2 and advance to the WPIAL quarterfinals to face Peters Township on Tuesday.  The site and time are to be determined.  Regardless of time and location, the North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast all the live action via the internet.

NA CLOSES IN ON SECTION TITLE WITH 3-0 VICTORY OVER PINE-RICHLAND

(10/16/12) The North Allegheny Girls Volleyball Team grabbed a stranglehold of Section 3 with a 3-0 victory over the Pine-Richland Rams on Tuesday night.  The Lady Tigers assured themselves at least a share of the section title with their victory and can claim sole possession of the section crown on Thursday night with a win at North Hills.  The win over Pine-Richland marked the first time since September 10, 2009 that NA has defeated the Rams, snapping a seven game losing streak to their neighborhood rivals.  The Lady Tigers got it done by grinding out set wins of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-23.

NA and Pine-Richland traded shots in the opening set before the Lady Tigers broke a 5-5 tie with an 11-4 run sparked by juniors Danielle Wall and Ashley Leto.  Wall contributed two kills and a block while Leto hammered down four kills to lead the NA charge.  Senior Ava Mosbacher and sophomore Meg Morningstar combined for a pair of blocks before Mosbacher finished off the Rams with two kills down the stretch to help NA to the 25-14 win in set one.

The Lady Tigers built a 20-9 lead in set two behind Mosbacher, Morninsgtar and Leto, and appeared to be coasting toward another victory before Pine-Richland displayed the mettle that has earned them 13 consecutive playoff appearances.  Sophomore Catherine Quigley led a furious Pine-Richland rally that brought the Rams to within 22-20.  Quigley notched four kills and Gabby Olson posted a kill and a block that had PR within striking distance, but the Rams self-destructed with a pair of net violations and a mishit by freshman Bailey Baker that helped NA to the 25-21 win in the second set.

Despite their rally falling short in set two, Pine-Richland continued their heightened level of play and exchanged points with the Tigers in a see-saw third set.  With exciting action on both ends of the floor, NA libero Kristen Mitchell, setter Maura Nolan and sisters Rachel and Jessica Samuels covered real estate over the entire NASH gymnasium for outstanding digs and assists.  To their credit as well, Pine-Richland’s libero Jessie Thompson and senior middle hitters Chloe DiPasquale and Abby Dix roamed all areas of the floor and inched the Rams to a 13-9 advantage.  The Tigers responded with a 10-1 run that gave NA a 19-14 lead thanks in part to two kills and a block by junior Erin Swartz and a pair of aces by Mitchell.  During the run, DiPasquale suffered an apparent leg injury that forced her from the game, a set-back that could’ve caused the Rams to buckle.  However, Pine-Richland battled back again and took a 23-22 lead as Dix came through with two kills and two aces and Olson chipped in with two kills down the stretch.  Undaunted, the Lady Tigers rolled off two straight points to pull ahead as a kill by Morningstar and a rocketed kill by Rachel Samuels gave NA a 24-23 lead.  Leto followed with a kill off the right-side blockers of Pine-Richland and out of bounds to send the Lady Tigers to an exciting two point victory in the third and final set.  Consistent throughout the night and displaying great velocity on her swings, Leto posted an unofficial 10 kills and an ace, garnering Wright Automotive Player of the Game honors.

The victory sends North Allegheny to 13-2 overall and 9-2 in Section 3.  Pine-Richland falls to 11-4 and 8-3 in the section.  The Lady Tigers can wrap sole possession of the section crown with a victory at North Hills on Thursday night.  Action gets underway at 7:30 pm.

(10/8/12) The North Allegheny Girls Volleyball Team won their sixth in-a-row with a 3-0 win over the top team in Section 1, the Penn-Trafford Warriors, on Monday night.  The Lady Tigers downed the Warriors with set wins of 25-23, 25-17, and 25-14.

NA and Penn-Trafford traded jabs in the first set which see-sawed in each direction. With the set tied 8-8, the Tigers scored eight of the next 10 points thanks to the play of senior Ava Mosbacher and sophomore Meg Morningstar.  Mosbacher hammered a pair of kills and Morningstar notched a kill and four blocks to eventually lift NA to a 25-23 victory in set one.  In one spectacular play, Morningstar made three blocks to deny the Warriors time and time again which would be a continued trend throughout the night. For her efforts, Morningstar was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Match.

Set two began in similar fashion to the first set, with the Tigers and Warriors battling back forth.  North Allegheny lead 10-9 before NA rolled off 11 of the next 14 points, again backed by Mosbacher and Morningstar.  Adding to the mix was junior Danielle Wall who scored four consecutive points for the Tigers with four kills to help NA to a 21-13 lead.  Penn-Trafford’s Maria Palarino did her best to keep her team in the game, but a Mosbacher kill finished off the Warriors for a 25-17 win.

Having seized control of the match, the Lady Tigers beat the Warriors with relative ease in set three.  North Allegheny jumped out to a 20-9 lead with some help from the Samuels sisters who combined for three kills, two aces and a block assist.  Junior Jessica Samuels did a nice job, along with sophomore Camille Kimmich, filling in for injured setter Maura Nolan to put their teammates in position for the big swings.  Senior Rachel Samuels capped the set and the game with a kill that clipped the top of the net to send home the Warriors with a set three loss of 25-14.  As she did throughout the contest, Morningstar contributed with three blocks and three kills in the final set.

LADY TIGERS FLY PAST MOON, 3-0

(9/26/12) The North Allegheny Girls Volleyball Team won the battle of the Tigers on Wednesday night with a 3-0 win over Moon.  Proving to be the more ferocious feline, North Allegheny had little trouble with the Moon Tigers and collected set wins of 25-11, 25-9, and 25-15.

NA raced to a 14-2 lead and an eventual 14 point victory in the opening set thanks to the collective efforts of Meg Morningstar, Ava Mosbacher, and Ashley Leto.  The trio each posted two kills in the set and combined for numerous blocks.  Early in the contest, North Allegheny asserted their dominance of the net over Moon by constructing a black and gold wall that denied Moon time and time again.  The centerpiece of that black and gold wall in set two was junior Erin Swartz who posted five blocks and four kills to lead NA to a 25-9 win.

In the third and final set, it was seniors Morgan Fischer and Rachel Samuels that dominated the action with four kills apiece.  With NA leading handily, Samuels delivered the most impressive swing of the night with a vicious kill that gave the Tigers a 19-9 lead.  For her efforts on the night, Samuels was chosen as the Wright Automotive Player of the Match.  Following the Samuels kill, North Allegheny continued on for a 25-15 win that finished off Moon.

SECOND-RANKED LADY TIGERS SMOTHER INDIANS, 3-0

(9/25/12) The Lady Tigers bounced back from their first loss of the season with a thorough defeat of the North Hills Indians, 3-0, on Tuesday night.  Second-ranked North Allegheny breezed by the Indians in the opening set, 25-10, in a terrific group effort.  Senior Ava Mosbacher posted three quick kills to help jump start NA to a 7-2 lead.  Ashley Leto, on her way to a team high seven kills for the night, notched a pair of kills and Katie Humes added two blocks as the Tigers grabbed command of the set, 23-8.  North Allegheny finished off the set victory behind kills by Meg Morningstar and Danielle Wall.

In set two, North Hills refused to go away easily as the Indians and Tigers battled back-and-forth throughout the set.  Neither team could pull away in the see-saw affair, with the lead fluctuated within two points for both teams from start to finish.  Keeping the Indians’ hope for a set win alive was athletic junior Ashley Taylor who posted four kills to help give North Hills a 20-19 lead.  That’s when setter Maura Nolan took control of the action and delivered three kills in the most critical stages of the set to pull NA ahead 23-21.  Nolan used an array of deceptive swings and sets to lead the way for the Tigers.  The talented junior posted 20 assists on the night to go along with a team high nine digs, earning the Wright Automotive Player of the Match honors.

A kill by Erin Swartz and a block by Mosbacher closed out the second set as the Lady Tigers pulled out a tight victory, 25-23.  Another key player in the victory was junior Jessica Samuels who came away with four kills in the set and finished with five for the evening.  Reverting back to their set one dominance, the Lady Tigers pulled away for a relatively easy, 25-11, set three victory.  Freshman Beth Muhlenkamp finished off the Indians with an ace to cap a 3-0 match win.

With the win, North Allegheny improves to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in Section 3.  North Hills drops to 2-5 overall and 1-5 within the section.  The Lady Tigers return to action tonight with a non-section contest against the Moon Tigers.  You can hear all the action live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

NA TRIPPED UP BY PINE-RICHLAND, 3-2

(9/20/12) Coming off a big victory against Seneca Valley earlier this week, the top-ranked Lady Tigers were upended on Thursday night by the second-ranked Pine-Richland Rams, 3-2.  The match-up between two top teams in Class AAA was a back-and-forth affair that saw the lead change hands numerous times.  Pine-Richland was able to squeak out the victory by set scores of 25-21, 20-25, 14-25, 25-15 and 15-8.

Despite the loss, there were plenty of outstanding performances for the Lady Tigers.  Junior Ashley Leto led the team in kills with 11 and was followed by senior Ava Mosbacher’s 8 kills.  The serves of Jessica Samuels and Danielle Wall helped NA as the pair produced four aces apiece.  Sophomore Meg Morningstar was solid in the middle with seven blocks.  Setter Maura Nolan put her teammates in position for big swings as she collected 27 assists.  Defensively, Kristen Mitchell led with 26 digs and Rachel Samuels posted 15.

The loss is the first for North Allegheny this season, dropping the Tigers to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in section play.  Pine-Richland improves to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in Section 3.  NA looks to rebound on Tuesday night with a home meeting against the North Hills Indians.  You can hear all the action live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.  Action gets underway at 7:00 pm.

TOP-RANKED LADY TIGERS STUFF DEFENDING
WPIAL CHAMPIONS, 3-0

(9/18/12) For the first time in nearly three years, the Lady Tigers defeated the Seneca Valley Raiders and did it in convincing fashion as top-ranked North Allegheny rolled through the defending WPIAL Champions, 3-0.  The Lady Tigers snapped an eight game losing streak to Seneca Valley with set wins of 25-17, 25-17, and 25-18.  Junior Ashley Leto was the catalyst for the victory with a phenomenal all-around performance.  Leto posted 11 kills, 10 digs and a pair of aces to help the Lady Tigers to the win.  For her efforts, Leto was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Match.

It was far from a one woman show however as there was plenty of support from players like senior Ava Mosbacher who led NA with 12 kills for the night.  The Raiders played from behind most of the evening, but briefly had a lead in set one, 13-10, thanks to junior Abby Trzeciak’s three kills and two blocks. However, it was both Leto and Mosbacher who spearheaded the Lady Tigers to a set one victory with Mosbacher hammering the Raiders with kills for four of NA’s final five points.

In set two, the Tigers used some of their bench to systematically march through the Raiders to the tune of another 25-17 score.  Sophomore Meg Morningstar collected three kills, and four for the game, and senior Katie Humes added a pair of kills.  Senior Rachel Samuels kept the Raiders off balance with her serves, collecting two aces in the set and four aces total.

In the third and final set, it was Leto and Mosbacher who once again took control to finish off Seneca Valley, 25-18.  In addition, senior setter Maura Nolan was strong with 26 assists, five kills and three aces.  Defensively, Kristen Mitchell led with 13 digs and Danielle Wall contributed with five digs, two kills and two aces.

The victory, the first for NA over Seneca Valley since September 23, 2009, improves the Lady Tigers to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in Section 3.  Meanwhile, the Raiders fall to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the section with the loss.  Up next for North Allegheny is a visit to second-ranked Pine-Richland on Thursday night.
