The North Allegheny ice hockey team opened the 2017-2018 season on Thursday night at the Baierl Ice Complex and dropped a narrow 5-4 decision in overtime to the Central Catholic Vikings. Skyler George netted the game-winning goal on a power play at the 4:24 mark of overtime to hand Central Catholic the win.

Central Catholic took an early 2-1 lead in the first period on goals by Mac Martin and John Null. North Allegheny answered with three straight goals to build a 4-2 advantage by early stages of the second period. Two goals by Aaron Miller, and an assist by Miller on a goal by Haden Shimko, gave the Tigers a two-goal lead just 1:49 into the second period.

The Vikings fought back with a power-play goal by Brian Freyvogel in the second period and a game-tying goal by Martin with 5:59 left in the third period to force overtime. That set the stage for George’s heroics in overtime.

North Allegheny outshot Central Catholic, 37-25. Vikings goalie Norbert McDermott made 33 saves in the victory. NA’s Ryan Heil made 20 saves and took the loss.

Central Catholic improves to 2-0 on the season. The Tigers pick up a point in the Class AAA standings with the overtime loss. North Allegheny will host Mt. Lebanon on Monday night at 7:00 p.m.
