Tigers Win Thriller Over North Hills, 82-79, In Overtime
In a dramatic Section 1-6A opener, the North Allegheny boys’ basketball team earned a hard-fought, 82-79, victory in overtime at North Hills on Friday night. At the same location where they clinched a playoff berth to end the regular season a year ago, the Tigers dealt the Indians another section loss, this time to start the 2021 campaign. It was the seventh consecutive win for North Allegheny in the head-to-head series with North Hills.
Senior Greg Habib and junior Matt McDonough sparked the NA offensive attack. Habib scored a game-high 26 points, while McDonough displayed his sharpshooting ability with 23 points and four 3-pointers. The duo helped the Tigers build a 54-48 lead after three quarters.
However, North Hills rallied in the fourth quarter behind a 19-point, 12-rebound effort from freshman Royce Parham and the Indians forced overtime with the score deadlocked, 70-70. Also touching double figures for the Indians were Alex Smith and Matt Seidl with 17 points each, and Ethan Chmura with 10.
North Allegheny outscored North Hills, 12-9, in the extra session to take home an 82-79 triumph back to Wexford. Also aiding the Tigers in the paint were seniors Khalil Dinkins and Ethan Lake, who netted eight points each.
The Tigers improve to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in Section 1-6A. The Indians fall to 0-1 overall and in section play. North Allegheny returns to action on Tuesday night at Seneca Valley in another section contest.
