The North Allegheny ice hockey team hosted Upper St. Clair in a AAA PIHL matchup from the Baeirl Ice Complex on Monday night. Both goalies held strong until the shootout, where the Panthers took the 2-1 decision.

The Tigers had a major chance to take an early lead during a 5-on-3 opportunity in the middle stages of the first period. Jackson Rose and Justin Schuster were in the box with just a 28-second difference between the infractions, but North Allegheny could not find the back of the net of Owen Laurent, who ended the contest with 24 saves. Tiger sophomore Chris Costa also registered 24 saves to stay perfect through regulation and the overtime frame.

NA also failed to capitalize on a Cooper Stutzman interference power play early in the second period.

The Tigers had the better opportunities during the three-on-three overtime period, with spirited play from juniors Nicholas Pasquale and Cedric Otey, along with seniors Eddie Scherer, Kyle Imm and Joey Mitchell.

In the shootout, St. Clair captain Nico Galardini put a wrist shot past Costa to give the Panthers the early advantage. Otey responded with a backhanded goal of his own. Costa saved Nevin Shegan Siniawski’s shot in the next round, and Laurent stopped the backhanded shot from junior Anthony Lucas. Jackson Rose’s goal in the third round made the difference, as Mitchell took a shot that hit the left post to end the shootout.

Costa was named Wright Automotive Player of the Game for his efforts.

North Allegheny is now 5-4 on the season. The Tigers are back in action on Thursday, December 4th, against South Fayette on the road.
