Tigers take opener in overtime at Norwin
North Allegheny opened the season traveling to Norwin High School on Saturday afternoon to take on the Knights. It took longer than 32 minutes but the Tigers came away with the 59-57 victory.
The first half showed what was to come as both teams kept it close. North Allegheny led 13-11 after a quarter of play and went into the locker room with a 29-28 lead. Will Robertson had seven points in the first half while Justin Stalter had six.
The Tigers went on an 11-3 run out of the locker room to lead Norwin, 40-31 with over two minutes left in the third quarter. The Knights would fight back to cut the deficit to 44-38 going into the fourth quarter. It was Norwin who made the run to start the fourth quarter, scoring the first nine points of the period and taking a 45-44 lead with 5:36 left in regulation. With the score tied 55-55 with five seconds left, NA had an opportunity to win the game but the shot was short and we were heading to overtime.
It was a very defensive extra frame as both offenses struggled to score. With North Allegheny leading 59-57 with 10 seconds left, Norwin elected to go for the three-pointer and the win but the iron was unkind and the Tigers escaped with the 59-57 triumph.
Ben Coffman led the Tigers with 15 points, 12 of them coming in the second half. Stalter had 13 points while Blake Craft added 12 points.
North Allegheny starts the season 1-0. Norwin falls to 0-1. The Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday when they host the Mars Fighting Planets at UPMC Court to start their home schedule. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and this game will be broadcast on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
