Tigers win Allegheny County Championships team title

North Allegheny traveled to Fox Chapel High School to take part in the Allegheny County Championships over the weekend. The Tigers had 11 wrestlers finish top seven, four make the final, and two win gold medals en route to the team championship with 262.5 points.

Griffen Reid and Bradyn McConneha won their respective weight brackets.

Reid won by tech fall in the second round and by pin in the third round and quarterfinals before claiming a 9-5 decision in the semifinals to get to the 152-pound final. In the final, Reid defeated Owen Campbell of Plum by a score of 7-2 to claim gold.

McConneha breezed through the 285-pound bracket as he had pins in 29 seconds, 31 seconds, and 61 seconds on his way to the final. In the final, McConneha pinned Plum’s Frank Grazulis in 3:34 to win the title.

Joseph Synan and Gus Stedeford had runner-up finishes over the weekend.

Synan won by tech fall in his first three matches before claiming a 5-4 thrilling decision in the semifinals. In the final, Synan was defeated by Bryce Thomas of Moon to claim the silver medal.

Stedeford won by pin in his first three matches before a triumph by major decision in the semifinals. In the 133-pound final, Stedeford dropped a 12-6 decision against Moon’s Cael Yanek to finish runner-up.

Hank Miller finished in third-place at the Allegheny County Championships.

Hank Miller won by fall in his first two matches before dropping his quarterfinal match. Miller would win his next three matches with a tech fall and two pins in the consolation bracket to get to the third-place match. In the third-place match, Miller took on Joseph Geller of Fox Chapel who had defeated him in the quarterfinals. Miller got his revenge, defeating Geller by a 5-4 decision to claim bronze.

Evan Schomburg ended the weekend in fourth place.

Schomburg started the tournament with three straight pins before falling by a 4-3 decision in the semifinals. Schomburg would bounce back to win by major decision in the consolation semifinals before losing a 5-2 decision against Robert Cordova of Thomas Jefferson in the third-place match.

Myles Hoover, Brody Barnhart and Charles Miller all were fifth-place finishers.

Hoover got the tournament started with a pin before winning a close 4-3 decision in the third round. Hoover would fall by that same score in the quarterfinals, but rallied to win his next two matches before dropping his consolation semifinal match. In the fifth-place match, Hoover defeated Fox Chapel’s Daniel Noel by a 6-3 decision.

Barnhart won his first match by a tight 2-1 decision before breezing through the next round by tech fall. He would lose in the quarterfinals before going 2-1 in the consolation bracket to get to the fifth-place match. In that match, Barnhart took down Luca Coury of Upper St. Clair by a 13-2 major decision win.

Charles Miller won by pin in the opening round before falling by injury default in the second round. Miller would bounce back to win his next five matches, four of them by fall, before being defeated in the consolation semifinals, placing him in the fifth-place match. In the fifth-place match, Miller pinned North Hills’ Alex Brackman in 56 seconds.

Gabriel Hernandez took sixth over the weekend.

Hernandez won his first two matches before losing by fall in the quarterfinals. Hernandez bounced back to beat his next two opponents before being tripped up in the consolation semifinals. In the fifth-place match, Hernandez fell to Weston Emmons of Shaler.

Dalton Stragand was a seventh-place finisher.

Stragand won his opening match before losing in the next round. Stragand won his next three matches by pin in the consolation bracket before falling 4-1 right before the consolation semifinals, putting him in the seventh-place match. In that match, Stragand defeated Ryder Gearhart of Keystone Oaks by pin.

Jonathan McDowell, Andrew Miller, Bryce Prosser and Nolan Orlando went 3-2 on the weekend. Denis Tsybuk and Daniel Willow went 2-2. Eli Mager picked up a win on the weekend.

The Tigers return to action on Wednesday when they host Butler at UPMC Court at 7 p.m. in their section finale. North Allegheny has already locked up the section title. That match will be broadcast on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
