Five NA grapplers move on to PIAA West Regional

North Allegheny traveled to Canon-McMillan High School to take part in the WPIAL Individual Championships that lasted over Friday and Saturday. The Tigers had five wrestlers move on to the PIAA West Regional as Bradyn McConneha finished runner-up, Griffen Reid had a fifth-place finish, Gus Stedeford finished in sixth, and Joseph Synan and Evan Schomburg each ended the weekend in seventh.

McConneha won by fall in his first three matches to put himself in the 285-pound final. In the final, he fell to Cam Danna of West Allegheny by a 5-2 decision to take home WPIAL silver.

Reid won 13-2 and 4-1 in his first two matches before dropping an overtime heartbreaker to Plum’s Owen Campbell in the semifinals. Reid lost a 5-4 decision in the consolation semifinals before bouncing back to defeat Rook Smith from Montour by a 7-2 decision to finish in fifth place.

Stedeford won by tech fall in the first round before being tripped up by Evan Tolliver of Ringgold in the quarterfinals. He won by decisions of 7-2 and 7-1 in the consolation bracket to get to the consolation semifinals. Stedeford would drop the consolation semifinal match and the fifth-place match by injury default to end the weekend in sixth place.

Synan opened the tournament winning by major decision before falling to West Allegheny’s Michael Johnson in the quarterfinals. He would go 1-1 in the consolation bracket to get to the seventh-place match. In a winner-moves-on match, Synan defeated Jax Brentzel from Penn-Trafford by a 4-2 decision to advance to the PIAA West Regional.

Schomburg claimed a 7-6 decision in the opening round before losing to Hempfield’s Nico Kapusta in the quarterfinals. He would win by major decision in his next match before dropping 4-3 sudden victory decision to Thomas Jefferson’s Robert Cordova. Schomburg bounced back to beat Gavin Bricker of Trinity, 12-9, to advance to the West Regional.

Myles Hoover and Dalton Stragand picked up wins on the weekend.

McConneha, Reid, Stedeford, Synan and Schomburg return to Canon-McMillan on Friday and Saturday to compete in the PIAA West Regional. Wrestling begins at 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
