Aidan Buggey, Bradyn McConneha Earn Trip To PIAA Championships
Ten Tigers competed at the WPIAL Class AAA individual boys’ wrestling championships at Canon-McMillan High School over the weekend and two NA grapplers advanced to the state championships in Hershey next week. Senior Aidan Buggey placed second at 215 pounds and sophomore Bradyn McConneha earned a fourth place finish at 285 pounds. The top four medalists in each weight class qualified for the PIAA Class AAA championships March 7-9.
For Aidan Buggey, he opened the 215 pound bracket with a prompt pin fall over Cody Krall of Greater Latrobe and followed with a 5-1 decision over Abrahm Taylor of Kiski Area in the quarterfinal round. That set the stage for Aidan Buggey’s bout with top-seeded Geno Calgaro of Canon-McMillan in the semifinals. In a hard-fought bout, Aidan Buggey earned a 3-2 decision by ultimate tie breaker to hand previously undefeated Calgaro his first loss of the season. In the title bout, Aidan Buggey fell to Ringgold’s Jake Conroy by a 5-1 decision.
In similar fashion, McConneha delivered a win by fall in his first bout with Latrobe’s Marco Scarton and followed with a 6-5 decision against Phiup Rearick of Armstrong in the quarterfinals. McConneha was pinned by top-seeded Shepherd Turk of Thomas Jefferson in the semifinals, but bounced back with a pin fall of his own against Cam Danna of West Allegheny in the consolation bracket to punch his ticket to Hershey. In the third-place consolation, McConneha dropped his final matchup by fall to Ben Lloyd of Mt. Lebanon.
While they didn’t qualify for states, impressive performances were turned in by senior William Bentrim (5th place – 133 pounds), sophomore Gus Stedeford (7th place – 121 pounds), senior Casey Walker (7th place – 127 pounds) and junior Mason Hartung (8th place – 189 pounds) in their respective weight classes.
Also competing for the Tigers at the event was freshman Evan Schomburg (107), junior Charlie LaQuatra (114), sophomore Gabriel Hernandez (145) and junior Kellen Buggey (172).
