Aidan Buggey Places 6th at PIAA Championships
The North Allegheny boys’ wrestling team sent two grapplers to the PIAA Class AAA individual wrestling championships in Hershey and both came away with impressive performances.
Coming off a runner-up performance at WPIALs last week, senior Aidan Buggey went 3-3 at 215 pounds and earned at sixth-place medal at states. After a first round loss, Buggey bounced back in the consolation bracket and rattled off three straight wins to reach the consolation semifinals. Buggey, a Duquesne University commit in football, picked up consecutive decisions over Reagan McCullough of Central Bucks East, Troy Mack of Downingtown West and Dayne Miller of Cumberland Valley. Back-to-back defeats for Buggey in the next two bouts resulted in a sixth-place medal against the best the state of Pennsylvania had to offer.
Sophomore Bradyn McConneha also qualified for the state tournament last week by placing fourth at WPIALs. In the 285 pound bracket in Hershey, McConneha opened with a win by fall in 5:11 over Micah Smith of Oxford to start the tournament. After dropping his next bout, McConneha earned another win by fall in the consolation bracket, pinning Adham Abouraya of Downingtown East in 2:43. McConneha concluded his run at states with a loss in the Consolation round of eight, narrowly falling to Andrew Brenna of La Salle by a 6-4 decision. Full results for Buggey and McConneha are below.
Buggey concludes to the 2024 season with a 30-8 record and 110 wins in his North Allegheny career. McConneha wraps of the season with a 24-14 record and will look to build on his strong sophomore campaign in the years to come.
