Evan Schomburg Wins Section Gold, 11 Tigers Qualify for WPIAL Tournament

North Allegheny crowned one section champion on Saturday and qualified 11 wrestlers for the WPIAL Class AAA tournament next week following a dazzling display at the WPIAL Class AAA Northern Sectional tournament at Kiski Area High School.

Freshman Evan Schomburg won section gold with a perfect 3-0 trip through the bracket at 107 pounds, culminating his trek to the title with an 8-1 decision over Shaler’s Anthony Jones in the championship bout.

Four other NA grapplers reached the title bout in their respective weight classes and came way with runner-up performances. Sophomore Gus Stedeford (121), senior Casey Walker (127), senior Aidan Buggey (215) and sophomore Bradyn McConneha (285) all claimed section silver.

Senior Will Bentrim, who recently announced his commitment to Ithaca College, won bronze at 133 pounds and defeated Andrew Price of Central Catholic by a 4-1 in the third-place consolation bout. Junior Mason Hartung also claimed bronze at 189 pounds with a third-place consolation victory with a 17-2 tech fall against Joseph Geller of Fox Chapel.

Other medal winners for North Allegheny included junior Charlie LaQuatra (4th place – 114 pounds), junior Kellen Buggey (4th place – 172), sophomore Griffen Reid (6th place – 139) and sophomore Gabriel Hernandez (6th place – 145).  For a complete look at the brackets from the WPIAL Class AAA Northern Sectional, click here.

All eleven Tigers will compete at the WPIAL Class AAA Individual Tournament beginning on Friday at Canon-McMillan High School.
