The North Allegheny ice hockey team dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to rival Pine-Richland on Thursday night at the Baierl Ice Complex in Warrendale.

In a tightly contested affair throughout, the Rams and Tigers traded goals late in the first period for the only markers in the opening stanza. At the 15:56 mark, Cullen Campbell scored a power play goal to give Pine-Richland the initial lead but North Allegheny needed just 34 seconds to tie the game on a marker by Marc Joyson and the game was deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the second period.

Zachary Howared continued the flurry of goals early in the second period and the Rams regained the advantage, 2-1. At the 10:55 mark of the period, North Allegheny’s Ed Scherer knotted the score at 2-2, but PR regained the lead at the 12:09 mark on a goal by Hayden Keegan. Just 47 seconds after the Keegan goal, the Tigers once again tied the score at 3-3 when Evan Kerber tickled the twine. However, Howard netted his second goal of the night with only 1:10 left before intermission, handing the Rams a 4-3 advantage.

After the Zamboni left a fresh coat of ice, PR’s Josh Lanyard opened the third period with a goal just 43 seconds into the stanza with a goal to stretch the Rams lead to 5-3. Undaunted, North Allegheny continued to fight back and Ryan Jackman cashed in on a power play to trim the deficit to 5-4 with 2:21 left in regulation. The Tigers couldn’t find the equalizer, however, and the Rams prevailed, 5-4.

Pine-Richland goalie Brett Sudac made 14 saves to earn the victory. North Allegheny starter net minder Camden Junker made 16 stops and suffered the loss.

North Allegheny slips to 2-1 overall on the young season, while Pine-Richland improves to 2-1. The Tigers return to action on Thursday, Oct. 26 for a home game against Cathedral Prep at 9:10 p.m.
