The North Allegheny boys’ basketball headed east this weekend for the York Suburban Tip-Off Tournament and dropped a 63-58 decision to the host Trojans on Friday night.

In the first quarter, senior forward Joey Dopirak sparked the Tigers with six points as both teams traded barbs in the early going.

NA trailed just 17-14 after one period, but the Trojans grew the lead to 37-27 by halftime thanks to the hot perimeter shooting of Kai Stryhn. Stryhn netted 14 of his game-high 21 points in the first half and buried five 3-pointers.

Fresh off a 26-point performance in the season opener, senior guard Anthony Sciote led another comeback bid for North Allegheny and tallied a team-high 15 points, with eight coming in the second half. Senior swing man Ty Iwanonkiw joined in the comeback efforts with all 10 of his points coming over the final 16 minutes. Joining Sciote and Iwanonkiw in double figures was Dopirak with 13 points.

Despite the late rally, the Tigers came up just short as York Suburban hung on for the five-point victory. Along with Stryhn, Nasir Barnes tallied 17 points, doing most of his damage at the free-throw line to help stave off NA. Barnes connected on 8-of-12 from the charity stripe.

The loss drops North Allegheny to 0-2 on the young season. The Tigers return to action on Saturday night to face Susquehanna in the consolation game at the York Suburban Tip-Off Tournament at 6:00 p.m.. York Suburban will take on Red Land in the night cap for the tournament title.
