NA Ice Hockey Wins Season Opener In OT, 3-2

Sophomore Tyler Duderstadt’s goal 59 seconds into overtime lifted North Allegheny to a 3-2 victory over Canon-McMillan in the 2016 season opener for the Tigers. North Allegheny, the top-ranked team in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette preseason poll, outshot the Big Macs, 28-14, and scored three of the final four goals to garner the win.

Canon-McMillan struck first in the opening stanza with an unassisted goal from Jacob McClelland to take a 1-0 lead. Thanks to the defense and goalie play of NA’s Alex Schuler and CM’s Nico Pidro, the score remaining 1-0 until a seesaw third period. Schuler stopped 12 of 14 shots while Pidro made 25 saves.

North Allegheny tied the game at 1-1 just 32 seconds into the third period courtesy of a Hayden Shimko marker, assisted by Justin Kidd and Dawson Richard. The Big Macs regained the lead at the 5:42 mark of the period on a power play goal by Christian Stewart and the scoreboard read 2-1, Canon-McMillan.

Showing great perseverance, the Tigers evened the score again with 1:21 left in the third period on a power play goal by Kidd to send the game to overtime tied, 2-2. Duderstadt, who assisted on the Kidd game tying goal, netted the game winner in overtime to vault the Tigers to a 3-2 triumph.

North Allegheny sits at 1-0 with the season opening win, while Canon-McMillan is 0-1. The Tigers host Pittsburgh Central Catholic on Monday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m.
