NA places fifth at Mid-Winter Mayhem Invitational
North Allegheny traveled to the Kovalchick Convention Complex on the campus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania to compete in the Mid-Winter Mayhem Invitational. The Tigers put up a great showing with three wrestlers placing top six and finished with a total of 121 teams points. That was good enough for fifth-place in the tournament out of 57 teams. NA was the top finishing WPIAL team in the tournament. Bishop McCort won the team title.
Griffen Reid and Bradyn McConneha each claimed silver medals.
Reid did not have a competitive match until the quarterfinals. After going pin, tech fall, pin, Reid defeated Lucas Drake of Abington Heights by a 4-0 decision. It was another easy win in the semifinals as Reid took down Joshua Weaver of Cedar Cliff by tech fall to get to the final at 152 pounds. In the final, Reid would fall to General McLane’s Clay Kimmy by an 11-9 decision to finish in second place.
McConneha had a similar start to his day as his first three matches were all pins in the first period. While his quarterfinal match also finished in a pin, it was a little more competitive getting into the third period. In the semifinals, McConneha upended Cam Danna of West Allegheny by a 4-2 decision to get to the 285-pound final. In the final, McConneha fell to Isaiah Taylor of AIM Academy to finish with the silver medal.
Joseph Synan finished the weekend in sixth place.
Synan got pins in his first two matches before defeating Luke Gray of General McLane by a 4-1 decision. Synan won a thriller in the quarterfinals taking down Braden Boardman of Shippensburg 3-2 in sudden-death overtime. Synan was tripped up in the semifinals and the consolation semifinals to find himself in the fifth-place match. In the fifth-place match, Synan dropped an 11-5 decision to Trinity’s Leonidas Murillo to finish the 107-pound bracket in sixth.
