NA Tops Seneca Valley, 62-53

The North Allegheny boys’ basketball team wrapped up the first half of section play on Monday night with a 62-53 victory over the Seneca Valley Raiders at UPMC Court. The win keeps the Tigers in sole possession of third place in the Section 1-6A standings and just one game back of first place.

The first half was tightly contested and was tied at 22-22 late in the second quarter before senior Ty Iwanonkiw knocked down a 3-pointer with just under a minute to play in the half to give NA a 25-22 lead at intermission.

The second half began the same way the first half ended, with an Iwanonkiw 3-pointer, and NA led 28-22 early in the third quarter. The trey by Iwanonkiw sparked a tide-turning third quarter in which the Tigers outscored the Raiders, 16-9, to build a 41-31 lead heading into the fourth. The big third period was spearheaded by NA’s ability to speed up the game with a quick-strike transition offense that repeatedly saw senior forward Joey Dopirak beat SV up the floor for layups. Dopirak netted 14 of his team-high 19 points in the second half and was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

In the fourth quarter, Seneca Valley trimmed the deficit to 43-38 but that’s as close as the Raiders would come as the Tigers defended their home court and came away with a 62-53 win.

Along with Dopirak, seniors Anthony Sciote and Joe Marquis each scored 14 points. Iwanonkiw added 12 points and three 3-pointers.  For Seneca Valley, junior Tyler Pepin tallied a game-high 22 points and posted three 3-pointers. Sophomore forward Owen Congdon totaled 18 points.

With the win, North Allegheny improves to 6-9 overall and 3-2 in Section 1-6A, while Seneca Valley slips to 5-12 overall and 1-4 in the section. The Tigers will host Shaler for Senior Night on Tuesday at UPMC Court. The game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
