NA Vaults Into First Place, Deals Peters Twp First Loss

Posted on:

In a clash of two PIHL titans, it was North Allegheny who came away the victors as the Tigers skated past the Peters Township Indians, 2-1, at the Iceoplex in Southpointe. The win gives North Allegheny sole possession of first place in the Class AAA standings and also marks the first time Peters Township has suffered defeat this season.

After a scoreless first period, the Tigers opened the scoring in the second frame on a goal by Dawson Richard at the 14:11 mark of the period.  A little over a minute later, Peters Township evened the score on a tally by Carter Ekberg and the game was knotted at 1-1 heading to the third period.

In the final stanza, NA’s Joseph Zappia III scored the game winner with 3:34 to play to put the Tigers ahead for good, 2-1.  For Zappia, it was his third game winning goal this season.

The Tigers edged the Indians with the help of a stingy defense and strong night from goalie Joseph Hubert.  The NA netminder stopped 23 of 24 shots.  PT’s Tony Lejeune made 20 saves in a losing effort.

North Allegheny improves to 7-1 overall and vaults into first place with 14 points in the Class AAA standings.  Peters Township falls to 6-1 overall and sits two points back of the Tigers. North Allegheny will duke it out with another top team in the classification, the Bethel Park Blackhawks, next Monday night.  The puck drops at 6:30 pm from BladeRunners in Warrendale.
