Strong Third Quarter Vaults NA To Road Win At Shaler, 60-46

In their section opener, the North Allegheny Tigers picked up a 60-46 road win at Shaler on Tuesday night. The Tigers overcame a seven-point deficit in the first half with a strong third quarter to win going away. Senior Isaac Barnes led the way with a double-double, recording a team-best 19 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Ray Sandherr added 10 points off the bench with 3 of 5 shooting from beyond the arc.

Both teams struggled through a cold first quarter with the game tied 8-8 after one period of play. Shaler heated up in the second quarter and took a 20-13 lead with 4:36 remaining before halftime. The Titans’ spurt was aided by the 3-point shooting of Jesse Tavella and Kevin Haberman. North Allegheny stayed close thanks to back-to-back treys from Sandherr to cut the score to 20-19 with 3:26 on the second quarter clock. A Curtis Aiken 3-pointer put NA in front, 22-21, with 1:52 remaining in the half but a 7-0 run by Shaler gave the Titans a 28-22 lead at intermission.

The third quarter, and consequently the rest of the game, belonged to North Allegheny with the post play of Barnes taking over the contest. Of his 19 points, 11 came in the third quarter to give the Tigers a commanding 44-34 lead heading into the fourth quarter. From there, the Tigers cruised to the win. Joining Barnes and Sandherr in double figures was Aiken who totaled 10 points and six assists. Shaler was paced by Anthony Venezia who netted 15 points and Kike Agbale chipped in with 10 points.

North Allegheny jumps to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in Section 1-AAAAAA action. Shaler dips to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in section play. The Tigers will host the top-ranked Pine-Richland Rams on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
