Tigers claim back-and-forth contest with Mars
North Allegheny hosted the Mars Fighting Planets on Tuesday night at UPMC Court in a non-section contest that was also the Tigers home opener. In a back and forth affair, the Tigers were triumphant, coming away with a 59-55 win.
NA jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Mars scored their first field goal with 4:45 remaining in the first quarter and settled in from there. There was no real separation in the first quarter, as the Tigers led 10-7 after one. North Allegheny extended the lead up to seven in the second quarter, but Mars fought back to trail 24-19 at the half.
The scoring really picked up in the third quarter. Mars got the first bucket of the period before NA went on a 9-0 run and attained their largest lead of the game at 33-21. Mars flipped the game on its head, going on a 12-2 run to make it a two-point game at 35-33. Things remained close and NA led 39-38 going into the final frame.
Mars registered the first lead of the game at 40-39 to start the fourth quarter and the biggest lead of the night at 43-39, but the Tigers played good defense down the stretch and hit their free throws, coming away with a 59-55 victory.
Ben Coffman led the Tigers in scoring with 14 points. Justin Stalter added 11. With his 11 points and defense on Mars’ top returning scorer Austen Wroblewski who was held to just nine points, Stalter was awarded the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.
North Allegheny improves to 2-0 overall. Mars falls to 0-1. The Tigers have the remainder of the week off before returning to action next Tuesday when they travel to Northgate for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
