The North Allegheny boys’ basketball team traveled to New Castle to face the Red Hurricanes on Tuesday night and dropped a 59-49 decision in the Section 1-6A opener.

Playing in the same section for the first time since the 2013-14 season, the Tigers went toe-to-toe with the undefeated Red Hurricanes and were tied 15-15 after one quarter of play. However, New Castle got on track in the second quarter and outscored NA, 17-7, to take a 32-22 lead at the half. Senior Jon Anderson caught fire and scored 11 of his 17 points in the second quarter for the Red Hurricanes.

The second quarter proved to be the difference in the ballgame as the Tigers traded baskets with the Red Hurricanes in the second half. Senior guard Isaiah Boice tallied a game-high 19 points, including a trio of 3-pointers in the early going, to help New Castle prevail in the end, 59-49.

North Allegheny was paced by junior forwards Ty Iwanonkiw and Joey Dopirak with 17 points each. Iwanonkiw did his best to keep the Tigers afloat in the second half by scoring 10 points over the final 16 minutes. Dopirak was strong on the inside with six buckets from the field and connected on 5-of-8 shots from the free-throw line.

The loss snaps North Allegheny’s three-game winning streak and dips the Tigers’ record to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in the section. New Castle stays perfect on the season with a 9-0 mark overall and 1-0 record in section play. The Tigers look to bounce back on Friday night with a home date against rival Pine-Richland. The game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
