Tigers Tame Foxes For Section Win
By: Jared Barton
The North Allegheny ice hockey team hosted Fox Chapel for a matchup at the Baierl Ice Complex on Monday night. The Tigers opened the scoring early and added insurance markers at the end of the second and third periods to take the 5-2 win and sweep the season series.
NA scored less than two minutes into the contest on a wrist shot from junior Marcus Garcia, assisted by fellow junior Luke Direnzo and freshman Cian Gallagher. The assist was Gallagher’s first varsity point of his career. Ten minutes later, freshman Cole Maier lit the lamp, assisted by juniors Anthony Lucas and Noah Joyce. Senior Kyle Imm scored in the late stages of the period on a shot that poked past Foxes’ starting goalie Charlie Hill, assisted by junior Cedric Otey. Miles Carey replaced Hill for the rest of the game in net.
Fox Chapel trimmed the lead to one with two quick goals to start the second frame. Parker Hanley scored a goal assisted by Linden Trac, then three minutes later Tucker Cullen scored an unassisted goal. NA senior Joey Mitchell scored the goal of the game, zig-zagging around the defenders and the goalie to find the back of the net with less than a minute to go in the period. Lucas tallied his second assist on the play.
The lone goal of the third period came courtesy of Imm, who connected with the help of Otey once again halfway through the period. Imm was named Wright Automotive Player of the Game for his two-goal night.
Sophomore Chris Costa made 20 saves in net to take the win.
North Allegheny improves to 8-7 on the season and now faces a quick turnaround. The Tigers face Central Catholic for the second time this season Thursday night from the Alpha Ice Complex. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
