To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers shot only 27% from the field in a tough 46-36 loss to Shaler at the Senior High gym on Friday night.  Senior Doug Dzambo scored 12 points to pace the Tigers who lost for only the second time in the last eleven games.  Stu Anglum netted 19 points to pace the Titans.

The poor shooting started early as neither team could score in the first 3:31 of action.  Anglum finally dropped in a short banker to give Shaler a 2-0 lead at the 4:29 mark.  Dzambo came back to hit a jumper to tie the score at 2-2.  Anglum scored again, and junior Richard Miller hit a jump shot to put Shaler ahead 6-2 at the 2:50 mark of the period.  Junior Nick Henderson came off the NA bench to drain a long trey to cut the margin to 6-5 just 18 seconds later.  Anglum scored his third basket of the quarter to push the margin to 8-5 before junior Ryan Tiesi answered with a triple to tie the score at 8-8.  Senior Nick Sefscik dropped in a trey to put Shaler back on top, 11-8, but Henderson scored with just one second left to cut the margin to 11-10 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, shots from the field were not dropping for either team.  The Tigers scored the first six points of the quarter to take a 16-11 lead.  Dzambo scored just 15 seconds into the period to give NA a 12-11 advantage.  Senior Tim Crouch scored from under the basket and Dzambo made two foul shots during the run.  Shaler was unable to answer, missing sixteen straight shots from the field.  Sefscik made one of two foul shots before he ended the scoreless string from the field with a trey at the 2:48 mark to cut the Tiger lead to 16-15.  NA had a golden opportunity to take a bigger lead during the quarter, but the Tigers missed their final ten shots of the quarter.  Craig Devinney was able to hit another trey for Shaler with 57 seconds remaining, and the Titans took an 18-16 lead to the intermission.  In the quarter, Shaler was 2 of 17 from the field while NA was 2 of 14.

Shaler broke out of the shooting slump early in the third quarter to take a 24-16 lead.  Sefscik hit a pair of jump shots and Miller added another during the 6-0 run.  Tiesi made a pair of foul shots to cut the margin to 24-18 at the 5:32 mark, but the NA shooting woes continued.  After Anglum hit a trey and Devinney added a foul shot to give Shaler a 28-18 lead, Crouch made one of two from line, and senior John Woodruff drained a trey to cut the lead to 28-22 with 4:19 remaining in the quarter.  Anglum then scored but Dzambo answered to make it 30-24.  The same two players scored again as Shaler maintained the six point lead, 32-26, with 1:08 on the clock.  The Tigers could not stop Anglum as he scored his third straight hoop and ninth point of the quarter to give the Titans a 34-26 advantage going into the final period.  NA was able to convert only 3 of ten shots during the quarter.

In the final period, the Tigers rallied.  After Sefscik scored to push the lead to 36-26, Tiesi hit his second triple of the game to cut it to 36-29 with 7:04 left in the game.  Woodruff hit a jumper and Dzambo dropped in two from the line to make it a three-point game, 36-33, with 5:32 still left in the quarter.  Devinney came back to hit a big three to push it to 39-33, but the Tigers weren't finished.  A trey by senior Brad Vlassich from the left side cut the margin to 39-36 at the 4:32 mark.  The NA defense then held Shaler on four straight possessions, but the Tigers could not take advantage of the stops.  NA would not score again in the game.  With 2:18 left, Miller hit another jumper to push the lead to 41-36.  The Tigers were forced to foul down the stretch and the Titans converted on five of six from the line to push the final margin to 46-36.

The Tigers ended up making only 12 off 45 attempts from the field for 26.7%.  While the Tiger offense had problems, the defense held high-scoring Shaler to just 17 for 58 (29.3%) and to 46 points.  The Titans were averaging over 65 points per game coming into the contest.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Doug Dzambo as the Player of the Game for the Tigers.

The loss dropped the NA record to 7-3 in section play, 13-5 overall.  The Tigers are now one game behind both Shaler and North Hills in the battle for the Section 3 title.  NA was scheduled to meet Canon-McMillan this afternoon at LaRoche College as part of the Section 3-Section 4 Challenge, but the game has been postponed due to bad weather.  The game will be played next Saturday at NA.  The Tigers will be back in action again on Tuesday night when they travel to Seneca Valley to meet the Raiders in a Section 3 contest.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Tyler Ashner hit a short jumper to open the second period scoring to  cut the lead to 26-13.  After Woodruff scored from the baseline, senior Tim Crouch dropped in one of two from the stripe, and Tiesi drove for another hoop as the lead ballooned to 31-13 at the 5:10 mark.  After Owens hit one of two foul shots, junior John Evans came off the NA bench to hit a long trey and push the lead to twenty at 34-14.  Lavalee then hit a triple before Torsten Brown answered to make it 37-17.  After Owens scored on a baseline jumper, Krewatch scored twice in the last 1:09 as the Tigers took a commanding 41-19 advantage to the intermission.

Owens came out strong at the beginning of the third quarter and hit two quick hoops.  Krewatch came back with a traditional three-point play to push the lead to 44-23.  After Owens scored again, Lavallee drained his second trey of the game to push it to 47-23.  Owens then scored his fourth hoop of the quarter, Crouch hit a free throw, and Owens came back again to score to make it 48-29.  Crouch then scored twice with nice moves under the hoop as the Tigers increased the margin to 52-29.  Baskets by Woodruff and Dzambo increased the margin to 56-29 and the rout was on.  Senior Mike Mosley hit a jumper to close out the scoring in the quarter, but the Tigers had a big 56-31 advantage after three periods of play.

Coach Dave DeGregorio substituted liberally in the fourth quarter as all fourteen Tigers saw playing time.  Henderson scored all thirteen of his points in the final period, junior Dino Johnson hit a trey, and junior Kevin Vater dropped in a deuce as the Tigers went on to a convincing 77-48 victory over an outmanned opponent.

It was a good team victory of the Tigers with twelve different NA players getting into the scoring column.  NA shot over 60% in the contest as they dominated play.  For his efforts early in the game, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Doug Dzambo as the Player of the Game.

The Tigers will face Perry in the championship game tonight.  The Commodores were an upset winner on Tuesday night as they upended defending PIAA Quad A Champion Penn Hills, 71-67, in the first game of the doubleheader.  Tonight's championship game is scheduled for 7:30 pm.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm.

TIGER TREYS TOO MUCH FOR SENECA VALLEY, 59-38

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers hit eight three-point baskets on their way to a 59-38 victory over Seneca Valley at the Senior High gym on Thursday night.  NA built a 38-20 halftime lead on their way to the victory.  Senior Brad Vlassich and junior Dan Lavalee had 12 points each to lead the Tigers with senior Tim Crouch and junior Ryan Tiesi adding eleven each.

In the first quarter, the game was close for only the first two minutes.  Lavalee got NA off to a good start when he drained a trey just 19 seconds into the game to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.  After Don Barclay scored from the baseline for Seneca, Crouch answered from under the hoop to make it 5-2.  Barclay came back to score, but so did Crouch who dropped in a pair of baskets from in close to increase the margin to 9-4.  The Tigers never looked back from this point in the game.  Tiesi hit a three and then a deuce to push the lead to 14-4.  After Matt Steinbrink came off the Seneca bench to score, senior Doug Dzambo hit a short banker to push it to 16-6 at the 1:31 mark.  Junior Dan Stanley dropped in a jumper for the Raiders, but senior forward Andrew Krewatch came back with 10 seconds left to give NA an 18-8 advantage after one quarter of play.

Neither team scored over the first two minutes of the second quarter until Vlassich hit a trey to make it a 21-8 NA lead.  After Barclay scored his third basket of the game, Vlassich drained another trey to push it to 24-10.  Krewatch then dropped behind the arc and hit still another three when he was left wide open.  After Steinbrink made one of two from the line, Crouch got open to score and push the margin to 29-11.  Dave Monteleone made one of two foul shots, but Vlassich dropped in a basket to increase the lead to 31-12 with 3:07 left in the half.  Tiesi increased the lead to twenty with a foul shot before Jason Davis scored to cut it to 32-14.  Tiesi drove and scored again to push it to 34-14.  After Monteleone made a nice move for a deuce, Lavalee hit his second trey to extend the margin to 37-16.  Monteleone's foul shot and a three by Stanley cut it to 37-20 with 45 seconds left in the quarter.  Tiesi converted one of two from the stripe to end the first half scoring as the Tigers took a 38-20 lead to the intermission.

To call the third quarter strange would be an understatement.  Only nine points were scored in the entire quarter.  After Pat Heery hit a jumper to cut the lead to 38-22 at the 6:03 mark, Lavalee came back to drop in his third three-pointer of the game to make it 41-22 with 5:21 remaining in the quarter.  NA would not score again in the period.  With the Tigers controlling the ball and looking for good shots, Seneca had little opportunity to cut into the lead.  Finally, with 1:10 remaining, Monteleone converted a traditional three-point play to cut the lead to 41-26.  The Tigers held for the last shot and were unable to score and the quarter ended with NA on top by fifteen.

The scoring picked up in the fourth quarter.  Tiesi was able to drive for a hoop at the 6:51 mark before Steinbrink answered to make it 43-28.  Lavalee completed some kind of cycle with his fourth trey, one in each quarter, to push the Tiger lead to 46-28 at the 5:49 mark.  Monteleone was able to get free for a pair of hoops to cut the lead to 46-32.  Crouch then scored with a reverse left-handed layup and added a foul shot to push the margin to 49-32.  Two foul shots by Jason Davis cut it to 49-34 with 4:44 remaining in the game.  Junior Kevin Vater scored on a fast break before Monteleone came back to make it a 51-36 game.  Vlassich dropped in four straight foul shots to increase the lead to 55-36 with 3:20 left.   Two foul shots each by Monteleone and Krewatch put the score at 57-38 with just 57.7 seconds left.  Junior Dino Johnson came off the NA bench to complete the scoring as the Tigers took away a 59-38 victory.

The Tigers dominated the game from early in the first quarter.  It was a good defensive effort by NA as they held Seneca Valley to under forty points.  A patient offense in the second half by NA resulted in a number of good shots that did not drop in the third quarter but did in the fourth.  For his efforts both offensively and defensively, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Tim Crouch as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers improved their section record to 3-1, the overall mark to 5-3.  NA will be back in action again on Tuesday when they meet Cornell in the second game of the NA Invitational Tournament.  Game time is set for 8:00 pm at the Senior High gym.

The Tigers came out strong attacking the boards but missed several early shots inside.  Vlassich put NA on the board first at the 7:10 mark with a hoop, but Searcy answered with a fadeaway jumper from the foul line to tie the game at 2-2.  After Searcy hit a short jumper to put NC ahead, senior center Tim Crouch made one of two foul shots, and senior Doug Dzambo put back a missed shot to give NA a 5-4 lead.  The Tigers would not trail again in the game.  Lavalee hit his first trey at the 4:17 mark and senior John Woodruff netted a baseline jumper to increase the lead to 10-4 with 3:54 remaining.  After Searcy made one of two from the line, Dzambo hit a short banker to make it a 12-5 NA lead.  New Castle point guard David Richards made a pair of free throws to cut the margin to 12-7 but Vlassich came back with a long three to push the lead to 15-7.  Lavalee completed the first quarter scoring with a trey with just five seconds left as NA took an 18-7 lead after one quarter.

Sophomore Anthony Harvey scored on a putback just sixteen seconds into the second quarter as New Castle cut the lead to 18-9.  Senior forward Andrew Krewatch answered with a short jumper to make it 20-9.  Vlassich dropped in his second three of the night to increase the lead to 23-9 at the 4:32 mark of the period.  After Harvey hit two foul shots, Woodruff and Lavalee scored to extend the lead to 27-11.  Richards drove and scored to cut it to 27-13, but Krewatch answered again with another putback as the NA lead went to 29-13 with 3:20 remaining.  Harvey scored four straight points on two foul shots and a hoop before Dzambo hit from under the basket to make it a 31-17 lead.  Searcy came back to make a pair of free throws and a short jumper as New Castle closed to within ten at 31-21.  Woodruff and Vlassich nailed treys in the last minute and a half as the Tigers went to the intermission with a commanding 37-21 advantage.

New Castle came out strong early in the third quarter and outscored the Tigers, 6-2, to cut the lead to 39-27.  At this point, the Tigers regrouped and took total control of the game.  Senior point guard Ryan Tiesi hit a trey to push the lead to 42-27 before Spencer Lane answered with a three to cut the lead to 42-30.  At this point, the Tigers went on an 11-0 run to take total control of the game.  Vlassich hit a deuce, Lavalee drained his third trey of the game, Woodruff dropped in a pair of foul shots, Crouch hit a short jumper, and Vlassich added two free throws as the Tigers took their biggest lead of the game at 53-30 with 1:01 remaining in the quarter.  Harvey was able to score on a fast break and completed the three-point play to close out the third quarter scoring as NA led 53-33 going into the final quarter.

After Tom Canal made two foul shots for the 'Canes to make it 53-35, the Tigers went into a ball control game for the remainder of the period.  A basket by Tony Andrews from underneath and a foul shot by Hakeem Fitzpatrick made it 53-38 before Tiesi made a pair of foul shots.  Doug Dzambo made one of two from the line as New Castle was forced to foul down the stretch.  Lavalee added one on two and junior Nick Henderson hit two straight from the line as the Tiger lead went to 59-38.  William Martin scored on a drive and Fitzpatrick hit a baseline jumper to complete the scoring as the Tigers defeated the 'Canes, 59-42.

The Tiger defense was outstanding throughout the game.  NA blocked a number of New Castle shots with Crouch doing most of the damage.  NA prepared well for the NC full court and half court trapping defenses and lit them up with good shooting from the outside.  For his efforts early in the game, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Dan Lavalee as the Player of the Game.

The win gave NA a section record of 1-0 and an overall mark of 3-2.  New Castle fell to 0-1 and 5-1 overall.  The Tigers will be back in action again on Friday when they travel to Butler to meet the Tornadoes in a Section 3 contest.  Game time is set for 7:30 pm.
