BUTLER STAYS UNBEATEN WITH 2-0 VICTORY
OVER TIGERS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Butler won their eighth consecutive game without a loss as they defeated the Tigers, 2-0, at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Goals by Wade Grubbs and Ben Horner led the Tornado to the win.  NA had opportunities but could not beat Butler GK Tim Duffy.

Butler put pressure on the NA goal from the outset.  Just two minutes into the game, the Tornado had a chance on a cross by Ryan Armahizer that was not finished in front of the Tiger goal.  A minute later, Grubbs was able to beat NA keeper Kevin Dreher to the ball out at the 18.  The Butler forward then bounced it off the left post and into the net to give the Tornado a 1-0 lead at the 3:00 minute mark.  In the eleventh minute, the Tiger defense was able to clear a Butler corner kick.  Halfway through the first half, the Tigers had a great chance to equalize when senior MF Chet Gapczynski sent a through ball to senior forward Ian Payling who bounced it directly off the left post.   Dreher came up big with two saves in the next five minutes.  The NA keeper dove to his right to stop a Butler chance and moments later, tipped a header over the crossbar.  Grubbs have another chance for Butler with 14:06 left but shot wide left.  Senior MF Brian Jewell got off a good shot from a tough angle at the 11:52 mark, but Duffy made the save.  Butler had three more chances late in the half.  Senior Doug Moran forced Dreher to make a good save on a long shot from 35 yards with 5:21 remaining.  Dreher robbed Moran again with another diving save with 3:15 left.  Finally, with just 1:20 on the first half clock, Andrew Schnur hit the inside of the right post but the ball did not cross the goal line.  Thanks to the NA defense, led by senior Trevor King and junior Brian White, and great work in the net by Dreher, Butler went to the intermission with only a 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, the Tigers were able to create more offensive chances.   After Dreher was forced to make another good save just 47 seconds into the half, junior MF David Gettemy had an opportunity but shot wide from 35 yards out.  Two minutes later, Gapczynski sent a hard direct kick just over the cross bar from 29 yards away.  Moran broke back for Butler, but  Dreher got a hand on his shot from the 18 with 31:26 left.  Just over a minute later, Gettemy came free from the left side, but Duffy made his best save of the game, a diving stop, to keep Butler on top.  Halfway through the second half, the Tigers turned up the pressure again.  Senior MF Matt Dunn sent a low shot in from 20 yards that Duffy stopped on a short hop.  A minute and a half later, senior defender Nick Severyn drove a strong attempt but Duffy again made the save.  With the Tigers pressing, Butler was able to get a breakaway with freshman Blake McChesney coming in all alone on the right side.  Dreher came out to cut down the angle, and McChesney's attempt went wide to the right at the 14:18 mark.  Payling had a chance two minutes later, but Duffy was able to beat the NA senior to the ball out by the 18.  Butler took advantage of a poor NA clearing pass to score their second goal at the 29:01 mark.  Horner was able to get off a hard shot that Dreher got a hand on but could not stop the ball from rolling into the NA net.  With a two-goal advantage, Butler was able to hold off the Tigers in the last ten minutes.  Junior Kenny Nakajima had two chances but Duffy was there to stop the first and the second went wide.  Senior Ian McFarlane forced Duffy to make another good stop with 4:24 left.  Nakajima broke along the goal line with 2:38 left, but his cross was caught by Duffy right in front of the goal.  The Tigers kept working hard right up until the end of the game.  Duffy robbed Payling when he stopped a header with 1:50 left.  The game ended with Butler taking home a 2-0 victory.

The Tigers played well defensively for most of the contest.  NA forced Butler into numerous offsides with their patented offside trap.  The early goal put the Tigers into a hole, and they spent the entire game playing from behind.  Spearheading the NA defensive effort was senior defender Trevor King who was named the Player of the Match by the North Allegheny Sports Network.

With the loss, the NA section record dropped to 1-1, the overall mark to 2-4-2 on the season.  The Tigers will travel to North Hills on Thursday night to meet the archrival Indians in a 7:30 pm section contest at Martorelli Stadium.

FACER'S GOAL ENOUGH AS TIGERS STOP SHALER, 1-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Junior Justin Facer scored with just 31 seconds left in the first half, and the Tigers held off Shaler for the remainder of the game in a 1-0 section victory at Newman Stadium on Thursday night.  Good defensive play, aided by several key saves by senior GK Kevin Dreher, gave NA the victory in the section opener.

Neither team mounted serious scoring opportunities for much of the first half.  Senior MF Chet Gapczynski sent a direct kick from 30 yards over the crossbar ten minutes into the contest.  Senior Matt Dunn had a chance on a cross from senior Ian McFarlane at the 30:34 mark but missed the net.  Shaler came back when Pedro Spina sent a long attempt wide from 30 yards.  Gapczynski got free for a header in the 14th minute but Shaler GK Mike Brewer made the stop.  Dunn skipped a long attempt minutes later that Brewer was able to catch on one hop.  Shaler came back at the halfway point forcing senior Steve Evankovich to head the ball over the goal line giving the Titans one of two corner kicks in the half.  At the 13:12 mark, junior Ross Carhart just missed the right corner as the game remained scoreless.  Carhart had another chance minutes later but Dreher stopped him.  Senior Brian Jewell forced Brewer to reach high on a long attempt from the right side at the 9:10 mark.  Spina shot wide with 7:54 on the first half clock.  The Tigers finally broke through just before the intermission.  NA forced the ball into the box wheresenior Garland Page sent it along the right side.  Facer made a great play to keep the ball from crossing the goal line and was able to find the net from an impossible angle to give NA a 1-0.  The Tigers took the one-goal lead to the break.

In the second half, the Tigers took control of play, keeping the ball in Shaler territory for much of the time.  Gapczynski had a good chance just 1:15 into the half, but Brewer made a good save.  Seconds later, Dreher had to come out and cover the ball on a Shaler break.  Junior Kenny Nakajima drove a long attempt from 25 yards that forced Brewer again to make the stop at the 31:40 mark.  Zack Palucka came back for the Titans less than a minute later but shot wide from15 yards out.  The Tigers continued to pressure defensively, and Jewell got off a sliding shot from 12 yards that missed just right .  With 22:59 left, Dreher was forced to came out of the box to clear the ball.  Facer lifted a high attempt from the right side that Brewer just tipped over the goal midway through the half.  Senior forward Ian Payling had a great opportunity from right in front of the Shaler net with 16:26 left but his shot went over the goal.  Physical play by Shaler led to a yellow card with 15:37 remaining.  After Dunn sent another shot over the goal, Facer's attempt from 10 yards went wide with 10:00 remaining.  Shaler turned up the pressure in the final minutes.  Shaler junior Kevin Monahan broke free, but Dreher made a sliding tackle with 5:30 left.  Seconds later, Monahan ran over Dreher in the box, but the Tiger keeper held onto the ball.  Again with 3:11 left, Monahan again ran into Dreher but he had already made the save.  Shaler had a final opportunity with seconds remaining, but Titan reserve Haris Feetahagic shot just wide as time ran out.

After a mediocre first half, the Tigers dominated play for most of the second half.  NA had scoring opportunities but could not finish throughout the half.  For his heroics down the stretch, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior Tiger GK Kevin Dreher as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers moved to 1-0 in section play, 2-2-2 overall.  NA will host Bethel Park tomorrow night at part of the Annual Soccerfest day of soccer at Newman Stadium.  There will be games played all day featuring NA soccer at all levels.  The varsity contest will start at 7:30 pm.

ERIE McDOWELL TOPS TIGERS, 1-0

Grep Hilbert scored on a penalty kick in the first half, and the Erie McDowell Trojans held off the Tigers for a 1-0 victory in Erie on Saturday afternoon.  NA had chances but could not finish as they completed their schedule of games against non-section opponents.

In the first half, the Tigers threatened early when a cross from senior Nick Severyn to junior Justin Facer for a header was stopped by the McDowell keeper with just 1:53 gone in the game.  Less than two minutes later, Severyn set up senior Garland Page for another header that was caught by the keeper.  McDowell scored at the 28:59 mark when Hilbert was tripped in the box and given a penalty kick.  Hilbert converted to score what would be the only goal of the game.  Later in the half, senior Ian McFarlane sent a hard shot from 27 yards over the crossbar.  With 15:24 left, a McDowell player beat senior GK Kevin Dreher to the ball but missed an open net.  The half ended with the Trojans holding a 1-0 advantage.

Early in the second half, junior Kenny Nakajima made a good run down the right side to the goal line, but his cross was caught by the keeper at the 31:10 mark.  Halfway through the half, senior Brian Jewell made a good attempt to chip the ball over the keeper but the McDowell GK was able to get back in time to make the stop.  The Trojans threatened with 18:44 left, but a good tackle and clearance by Severyn stopped the attempt.  NA had one final opportunity to score when senior Steve Evankovich sent a through ball to senior Ian Payling behind the Trojan defense.  Once again, the keeper for McDowell was able to make the play to preserve the victory.  Time ran out with McDowell picking up the 1-0 win.

The Tigers played well in the pre-section games in spite on winning just once.  Good play against top-notch competition should prepare NA well for the upcoming section season.

The loss gave the Tigers a final pre-section record of 1-2-2.  NA was scheduled to play Seneca Valley on Tuesday night but inclement weather forced the cancellation of the game.  The Tigers will host Shaler on Thursday night in section play.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

JV UPDATE:  The JV team defeated McDowell, 1-0, ona goal by Andrew McIlvried on a cross by Peter Schweers.

TIGERS, LEBO BATTLE TO A 1-1 TIE

The Tigers held the Post-Gazette's #2 ranked Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils to a 1-1 tie at Newman Stadium on Thursday night.  After Lebo scored just before halftime to take a 1-0 lead, the Tigers rallied to tie the game early in the second half on a goal by senior forward Ian Payling.  Good play in goal by senior Kevin Dreher in overtime preserved the tie.

The Tigers got the first good scoring opportunity at the 32:25 mark when senior MF Chet Gapczynski sent a cross from the right side that senior forward Garland Page headed just over the crossbar.  Midway through the half, Mt. Lebanon's Jacob Zvonar drove a hard shot from 17 yards that was stopped by Dreher to keep the game scoreless.  With 20:11 remaining in the half, a Mt. Lebanon trick play off a direct kick was cleared by senior defender Phil Greenblatt.  Minutes later, a second Lebo corner kick was stopped and cleared by senior defender Nick Severyn.  NA created two more chances later in the half.  On a cross from senior midfielder Brian Jewell to senior Ian McFarlane left the ball in front of the Lebo goal, but the Tigers could not finish.  At the 6:54 mark, Jewell sent a through ball to Payling but his shot from 22 yards just sailed over the goal.  Dreher made a good save on a shot from 12 yards by Zvonar with 4:51, but Lebo broke through just before the half.  A long throw sent Alex Drexler in for an unassisted goal with just 58 seconds remaining.  Mt. Lebanon took a 1-0 lead to the intermission.

Early in the second half, the Tigers got the equalizer.  Junior defender Kenny Nakajima pushed the ball to Payling who got behind the defense.  When the Mt. Lebanon keeper came out, Payling chipped the ball over his head into the goal.  NA had tied the game just 1:44 into the half.  Most of the second half was controlled by the defense, but the Tigers did get several good scoring chances.  Gapczynski had an opportunity to score at the 20:04 mark, junior forward Justin Facer had another chance at the 5:27 mark, and Gapczynski came close with just 2:39 remaining.  Lebo had a direct kick with just 27 seconds on the clock, but Dreher was able to clear the attempt.  Regulation time ended with the game tied at 1-1.

Neither team scored in an uneventful first overtime period.  The second OT belonged to the Blue Devils.  Early in the period, a hard drive by Aaron Kolko from 18 yards was stopped by Dreher.  A great slide tackle by senior MF Matt Dunn stopped another Lebo chance at the 3:23 mark.  A header by Lebo went over the goal with 2:56 left.  A final attempt from point blank range was pushed over the top of the goal by Dreher to preserve the tie.

It was a good result for the Tigers against one of the top ranked teams in the WPIAL.  The tie was the second of the season for the Tigers as their overall record went to 1-1-2.  NA will travel to Erie tomorrow afternoon to meet McDowell in the final non-section game.  The scheduled starting time is set for 1:30 pm.

TIGERS CRUSH SEWICKLEY ACADEMY, 6-0,
FOR FIRST WIN

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

After being held scoreless in the first two games, the Tigers erupted for six goals on Tuesday night at Newman Stadium in a 6-0 victory over defending Class A champion Sewickley Academy.  Senior forward Ian Payling scored a pair of goals to lead the Tigers with senior MF Brian Jewell adding a goal and an assist.  Senior forward Andy Barbin, junior MF Tommy Petrus and senior defender Nick Severyn tallied the other NA goals.

The Tigers started early when senior forward Garland Page broke free along the left side in the first minute but his cross was blocked by the Sewickley defense.  Junior forward Ian Frey recorded the first SA shot at the 35:10 mark, but his attempt from 25 yards was stopped by NA senior goalkeeper Ian McFarlane.  Panther junior forward Andy Sharek had a great chance from the 18 but his shot went over the crossbar.  Barbin gave NA the lead for good when he converted a pass from Jewell at the 29:59 mark.  Jewell came back a little over a minute later when he drove home a rebound after Panther GK Taylor Stine could not control a Tiger shot.  The goal came with 28:19 remaining in the half and gave NA a 2-0 advantage.  McFarlane made a diving save at the 24:27 mark to keep the Tigers up by two.  Gapczynski had two chances in the 22nd minute but both shots were stopped by Stine.   Minutes later, Gapczynski sent a high direct kick near the goal, and Petrus was there to head it in at the 16:25 mark to give NA a 3-0 lead.  The Panthers had two chances late but McFarlane was there to make the saves on attempts by sophomore Bobby O'Donnell and Colin James.  The Tigers took a commanding 3-0 lead to the intermission.

Early in the second half, McFarlane again made a tough save off a Sewickley corner in the third minute.  Payling came through minutes later when he headed in a cross from junior forward Justin Facer to increase the NA lead to 4-0 at the 34:15 mark.  Gapczynski came close a little over a minute later but Stine made a diving stop.  Severyn was able to drive a hard shot into the net from just beyond the 18 to increase the margin to 5-0 with 28:36 remaining in the game.  The Panthers did not give up, however, and forced McFarlane to make another tough save off a long direct kick by sophomore defender Nate Napoleon halfway through the second half.  The Tigers kept pressing also and Stine was forced to make a good play to stop junior MF David Gettemy from heading in a cross from Payling.  NA had one final chance but a shot from junior defender Kenny Nakajima just went over the crossbar with 6:42 left.  Payling put the finishing touches on the 6-0 shutout when he scored on a deflection from a difficult angle with just 35 seconds remaining.

The Tigers dominated the contest from the outset and used good defense to keep the Panthers scoreless.  Senior defenders Phil Greenblatt, Trevor King, and Severyn held Sewickley in check throughout the game.  McFarlane was strong in the net for the Tigers and posted his second shutout in three games.  NA has allowed only one goal to this point in the season.  For his offensive efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Ian Payling as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers improved their non-section record to 1-1-1 as they get ready for section play.  NA will host Mt. Lebanon tomorrow night at Newman Stadium in the another non-section contest.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
