VARSITY/JV WRESTLING MATCH SUMMARIES TIGERS DOUBLE UP GATEWAY, 42-21 The Tigers made it four straight with a 42-21 non-section victory over Gateway on Saturday afternoon at the Senior High gym. Four Tigers won by fall to pace NA to the victory. Freshman Joe Waltko at 103, junior Steve Sabreen at 112, sophomore Karl DeCiantis at 160, and sophomore Brian Faber at 171 all pinned their opponents as the Tigers dominated the Gators The Tigers were victorious in the first three weight classes. Joe Waltko pinned Eric Pelkey in just 28 seconds at 103 while Sabreen needed only 1:04 to put away Joe Petrakis. At 119, freshman Rick Peluso took a 14-1 major decision over Tres Foster. After a loss at 125, junior Ryan Troiano decisioned Casey Conelly, 3-1, at 130. At 140, junior Ryan McCullough posted a 17-7 major decision against Chad Stubenbort. After losses at 145 and 152, DeCiantis was able to pin Jack Fallon at 1:46. At 171, Faber picked up the second consecutive fall when he needed only 18 seconds to pin Jihad Scott of the Gators. At 189, junior Rob Waltko continued to be successful with an 8-3 decision over Nick Baughman. Senior Rory Dahl stepped up with a 9-0 major decision over Clayton Garcia. The Tigers forfeited the 275 pound weight class but NA had already wrapped up the victory The Tigers will be back in action again on Thursday when they travel to Ambridge for a section contest. The match had originally been scheduled for Wednesday. Match time is set for 7:00 pm.

DOMINATE To listen to a replay of the match, click here! The Tigers won their third straight section match with a 56-9 trouncing of the Seneca Valley Warriors on Friday night at the Senior High gym. NA registered four pins and two technical falls as they won twelve of the fourteen matches. Pins by freshman Joe Waltko at 103, freshman Rick Peluso at 119, freshman Dave Cawley at 125 and senior Rory Dahl at 215 paced the NA victory. Freshman Dave Cawley got the Tigers off to a good start with a win by fall at 125 to begin the match. Cawley dominated with an early takedown and pinned Steve Danylo just 50 seconds into the match. Junior Ryan Troiano won a 5-0 decision over Russ King at 130 as the Tigers increased the lead to 9-0. At 135, sophomore Ty Dixon dominated Tim Gilbert from the outset taking a 16-1 technical fall. After junior Ryan McCullough won by forfeit at 140, the Tigers held a 20-0 advantage. At 145, freshman Brett Landefeld rallied in the third period to tie his match with Frank Mullett, 2-2, and send the contest into overtime. In the second overtime period, Mullett escaped for a 3-2 win and a tough loss for Brett. Junior Bill Landefeld came through at 152 with a 10-4 decision over Dave Kovach as the Tigers increased the lead to 23-3. At 160, sophomore Karl DeCiantis controlled Austin Kanfoush throughout the match on his way to a 21-5 technical fall. In the most exciting match of the evening, sophomore Brian Faber reversed Zach Cahall with seconds remaining to pull out an 11-10 victory. Cahall had taken a 10-9 lead just seconds earlier. with the win at 171, the Tigers had a commanding 31-3 lead. At 189, junior Rob Waltko gave up about twenty pounds to Ben Fallox of the Raiders but still won a 20-8 major decision. Waltko outscored Fallox, 10-4, in the third period to pull away and earn the win. At 215, senior Rory Dahl needed only eight seconds in the second period to pin Ryan Scheller. The Tiger lead went to 41-3 after the fall. At 275, Phil Magnanelli of Seneca pinned Alejandro Alonso of NA to give the Raiders six points. The Tigers won the last three bouts of the evening to win going away. At 103, freshman Joe Waltko pinned Grant Evans in the third period after building an 18-4 lead. At 112, junior Steve Sabreen used a steady performance to post a 5-0 decision over Steve Fiato. In the final match of the evening, freshman Rick Peluso pinned Nick Mintop in the second period to put the finishing touch on an impressive 56-9 victory. With the win, the Tigers stayed unbeaten in Section 3 with a 3-0 mark. For his performance, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Karl DeCiantis as the Wrestler of the Match. NA will host Gateway this afternoon in a non-section match at the Senior High gym. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 pm.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS WIN TWO AS SECTION MATCHES BEGIN The Tigers defeated Avonworth, 52-24, and North Hills, 42-25, as Section 3 action got underway on Wednesday night at Avonworth High School. The two wins got NA off to a good start with a 2-0 record in section. The Tigers fell behind rival North Hills, 19-3, before rallying for the victory. With the match starting at the 119 weight class, the only Tiger to win in the early going was freshman Dave Cawley, who defeated Kevin Kyes, 7-1, at 125. Junior Ryan McCullough broke a four-match NH winning streak with a 9-4 win over Bob Hankins at 152. NA then took over the match. Sophomore Karl DeCiantis pinned Kevin Fulton in only 50 seconds at 160, sophomore Brian Faber pinned Sean Smith in 54 seconds at 171 and junior Rob Waltko provided the Tigers with their third straight pin at 189 when he won by fall over Zach McCarty in 1:05 to give NA their first lead at 30-19. After senior Rory Dahl won by forfeit, Indian heavyweight Andrew Dice picked up a pin to cut the lead to 30-25. At 103, freshman Joe Waltko won by forfeit, and junior Steve Sabreen ended the match with a pin at 112 as the Tigers earned a 42-25 victory. Against Avonworth, it was NA doing the early scoring a they took an 18-6 lead. With the match beginning at 125, Cawley and Ryan Troiano won by forfeits to start the match with NA on top, 12-0. After a pin by Avonworth's Dan Puciata cut the lead to 12-6, junior Jeff Wolf came through with a pin over Dan Hedgliln at the 2:56 mark to increase the lead to 18-6. Avonworth came back to win the next three matches by decision and tie the score at 18-18. Sophomore Brian Faber broke the tie by pinning Justin Okinski at the 1:02 mark to put the Tigers ahead for good at 24-18. Rob Waltko and Rory Dahl followed with pins to put the match out of reach as NA took a commanding 36-18 advantage. After Adam Harvey won by fall at heavyweight for Avonworth, Joe Waltko major decisioned Conrad Branchen, 14-0, at 103. Sabreen and freshman Rick Peluso followed with forfeit wins as the Tigers went on to win, 52-24. The Tigers will host neighborhood rival Seneca Valley tonight at the Senior High gym. The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the match LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-match show at 6:50 pm. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

* - indicates starting weight * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WALTKO CLAIMS THIRD PLACE AT WALSH IRONMAN Junior Rob Waltko won four straight matches on Saturday to win the bronze medal at the 171 pound weight class at the prestigious Ironman Tournament at Walsh Jesuit in Ohio. After being pinned by Brian Roddy of St. Edward (OH) in the quarterfinals, Waltko major decisioned John Tangeman of Broomfield (CO), 10-1. In the next consolation match, Waltko edged Matt Wenger of Dakota (IL), 3-2, before major decisioning Andrew Hoffer of Christiansburg (VA), 10-1. In the third place match, Waltko dominated with a 15-0 technical fall over Cody Magrum of Oak Harbor (OH). Three additional Tigers won medals in the competition. At 125, freshman Dave Cawley finished in 6th place. After losing to Keith Sulzer of St. Edward (OH), 5-2, in the quarterfinals, Cawley major decisioned Anthony Melillo of Padua Franciscan (OH), 14-2. In the next match, Cawley took a 3-0 decision over Casey Thome of Troy Christian (OH) before losing a major decision, 10-2, to Quentin Keyes of host Walsh Jesuit. In the match for fifth place, Cawley lost to Ian Moser of Caesar Rodney (DE), 8-1. At 103, freshman Joe Waltko was the seventh place winner. In the consolation bracket, Waltko decisioned Gabe Gomez of Broomfield (CO), 2-1, before winning a 7-3 decision against Chris Keech of Caesar Rodney (DE). After a 2-0 loss to Ian Squires of Christiansburg (VA), Waltko decisioned Joe Norton of Montini Catholic (IL), 3-0, in the match for seventh place. Sophomore Karl DeCiantis finished in 8th place in the 160 pound weight class. After losing in the quarterfinals to Lawrence Beckman of Reynolds (PA), 3-2, DeCiantis came back with a major decision over Matt Milavec of Elyria (OH), 12-4. Adam Phillips of Massillon Perry defeated DeCiantis, 8-2, in the next match. In the seventh place match, Scott Cust of Great Bridge (VA) won by major decision, 12-3. The Tigers will begin section on Wednesday night at Avonworth. NA will wrestle North Hills at 6:00 pm and Avonworth at 8:00 pm in the first section matches. * * * * * * * * * * FRIDAY'S ACTION Four Tigers won two matches on the first day of the Walsh Ironman Tournament at Walsh Jesuit in Ohio to advance to the quarterfinals. Junior Steve Sabreen at 112 defeated Benny Marti of Montini Catholic (IL), by technical fall, 17-2, and pinned Nick Busch of Parkersburg (WV) at 3:31 to advance. At 125, freshman Dave Cawley earned a major decision over Mark Betzel of Elyria (OH), 10-0, before win by decision, 8-1, over Vince Mannon of Montini Catholic (IL). Sophomore Karl DeCiantis pinned Mark Gaydosh of Padua Franciscan (OH) at 29 seconds before edging Greg Crane of Fremont (CA), 10-8, in the second round. At 171, junior Rob Waltko was seeded 3rd and advanced to the second round with a bye. Waltko won his second round match, 9-6, over Tim Hill of Great Bridge (VA). Three Tigers are still alive in the consolation brackets. At 103, freshman Joe Waltko pinned Keefer Taylor of Blair Academy (NJ) at 3:13 to advance to the next consolation match. At 152, junior Bill Landefeld won two matches after dropping his first match. Landefeld downed David Neidhart of Marion Pleasant (OH), 13-6, before decisioning Matt Littleton of Parkersburg (WV), 8-5. At 215, senior Rory Dahl major decision Herold Peace of Caesar Rodney (DE), 12-1, before losing, 6-0, to Marco Capone of St. Vincent-St. Mary (OH). * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WALTKO WINS EASTERN INVITATIONAL TITLE AT 171 Junior Rob Waltko major decisioned Damian Majocha of Burrell, 10-0, to win the championship of the 171 pound weight class at the Eastern Area Invitational Tournament at Gateway High School on Saturday night. Junior Steve Sabreen at 112 and sophomore Karl DeCiantis at 160 both made it to the finals but had to settle for silver medals. In the semifinals, Waltko major decisioned Steve Makin of Central Cambria, 10-2, to advance to the championship match. At 112, Sabreen edged Jake Quniten of Plum, 3-2, in the semis before falling to Brock Livorio of Penn Trafford, 9-1, in the final. At 160, DeCiantisdecisioned A.J. Brentzel of Penn-Trafford, 7-4, before being pinned in the final by Josh Shields of Burrell just seven seconds before the end of the match. In the consolation round, freshman Dave Cawley fought all the way back to the consolation final where he pinned Devon Jones of Penn-Trafford at 1:44 to win the bronze medal. Junior Bill Landefeld lost in the semifinals and in the consolation final where he was decisioned by Derek Maloney of Burrell, 7-4. Landefeld finished in 4th place. Kiski Area won the team championship with the Tigers finishing in seventh place. Next weekend, the Tigers will wrestle in the Ironman Invitational at Walsh Jesuit.

* * * * * * * * * * * * FOUR TIGERS ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS IN EASTERN AREA INVITATIONAL Four Tigers were successful in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Area Invitational Tournament on Friday at Gateway High School to advance to the semifinals. At 103, junior Steve Sabreen pinned Justin Heilman of Pters Township at 4:48 in the first round. In the quarterfinals, Sabreen decisioned Patrick Connah of Central Cambria, 6-0, to advance to the semis where he will meet Jake Quinten of Plum. At 152, junior Bill Landefeld won by forfeit in the first round before pinning Bill Long of Kittanning at 5:09 to advance to a semfinal matchup with Ryan Sula of Gateway. After a first round bye at 160, sophomore Karl DeCiantis pinned Greg Vanucci of Hopewell at 3:55 to move on to a semfinal match with A.J. Brentzel of Penn Trafford. At 171, top-seeded junior Rob Waltko pinned Randy Stewart of Penn Trafford at 3:15. Waltko will face Steve Makin of Central Cambria in the semifinals. At 145, junior Ryan McCullough decision Cory Atwood of Kittanning, 8-5, in the first round before losing an 8-2 decision to Bob Bryan of Penn Trafford in the quarterfinals The Tiger team is currently in seventh place in the team standings. Today, 2nd round consolations will start at 10:00 am with the semifinals and third round consolations at 11:00 am. The consolation semifinals are slated to begin at 3:30 pm. The Parade of Champions, finals and consolation finals will start at 7:00 pm at the Gateway Senior High gym. Several NA wrestlers are listed among the top individuals entered in the tournament.
