TIGERS RALLY TO ROUT BUTLER, 8-3

After falling behind, 2-0, the Tigers came back to score the next eight goals on their way to an 8-3 victory over Butler at the Ice Connection on Thursday night.  Junior forward Dylan Rohar scored three times and junior forward Donny Lewis twice for the winning Tigers.  Freshman Andrew Black, senior Brady Waldschmidt and senior Josh Herbert also added goals for NA.

Butler jumped off to a quick 1-0 lead when R.C. Double scored just 2:06 into the contest.  The Tornado made it 2-0 when Dave Wolfe set up Zach Pennington with 5:32 remaining in the period.  The Tigers came back, however, with Rohar tallying his first of the night on an assist from sophomore defenseman Matt Ogle to cut the margin to 2-1 with 4:02 left.  The teams went to the first intermission with Butler holding a 2-1 advantage.

The second period belonged to the Tigers.  Rohar tied the game 27 seconds into the stanza on an assist from Black.  Black gave the Tigers their first lead of the game midway through the period with Rohar and Ogle adding assists.  Rohar completed the hat trick with 5:14 remaining with Herbert and junior defenseman Tyler Hagy picking up the helpers as the Tigers took a 4-2 lead.  The period ended with NA holding a two-goal advantage.

In the third period, the Tigers extended the margin to 6-2 on two quick goals.  Waldschmidt made it a 5-2 game on assists from Lewis and Herbert at the 3:42 mark.  Less than a minute later, Lewis scored with assists going to seniors Tyson Stupy and Bo Schwab as the Tigers took a four-goal lead.  Herbert and Lewis added goals with Double scoring for Butler late in the period as the Tigers went on to the 8-3 victory.  Sophomore goalie Greg Borza was in the net for the Tigers and earned the victory.

The Tigers outshot Bulter, 40-19, as they improved their section record to 3-2 on the season.  NA will host Seneca Valley on Tuesday, November 27, in their next PIHL contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 8:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 8:30 pm.

TIGERS SCORE LATE TO DEFEAT McDOWELL, 5-3

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Freshman Andrew Black scored a power play goal with 3:50 remaining and junior forward Brady Waldschmidt added an empty net tally as the Tigers defeated Erie McDowell, 5-3, at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Black and Waldschmidt each scored a pair of goals while junior forward Bo Schwab added a single tally for the winning Tigers.

The Trojans got on the board quickly just 20 seconds into the first period when Chris Michalek drove home a rebound of a shot by Erik Frits to give McDowell a 1-0 advantage.  With senior forward Josh Herbert in the box, NA senior goalie Max Richards made a good save at the 2:00 mark to keep the Tigers within one.  Herbert had a chance on a Tiger power play at the 3:20 mark but his shot from the left side went just wide.  Rohar had another opportunity seconds later, but Trojan goalie Andrew Ericson made the save.  With 7:45 remaining, Frits was stopped by Richards on another attempt from the left side.  The Tigers tied the game at 1-1 a little over a minute later when Schwab tipped in a shot by Rohar from the right circle.  NA almost took the lead on another power play, but Ericson stopped four consecutive Tiger shots, the last coming from junior Donny Lewis from right in front of the net.  McDowell's Shane Reese got free on two breakaways in the last minute and a half, but Richards made both saves.  With 1:26 remaining, Black was able to score off a pass from Rohar to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.  NA took a 2-1 advantage to the first intermission.

Early in the second period, Black had another chance from right in front of the net, but Ericson made the stop.  Junior defenseman Tyler Hagy drove two hard slap shots from the right point but could not beat the McDowell goalie.  Richards had to make a pair of saves at the 4:08 mark to keep the 2-1 lead.  With 7:16 remaining in the period, Herbert broke free down the left side and was tripped by Ericson as he cut across in front of the goal.  In the ensuing power play, Rohar had two more opportunities but Ericson was there for the saves.  With 5:40 remaining, Richards made a good save on Brian Barney to keep NA in front.  With Waldschmidt in the box for tripping, Barney came back to put home a rebound and tie the game at 2-2 with 1:33 remaining in the period.  The Tigers were not finished, however.  Lewis made a good move down the right side and set up a breaking Waldschmidt who tied the game with just 33 seconds on the second period clock.  The teams went to the second intermission tied at 3-3.

Both teams played a more conservative game early in the third period as they looked for the go ahead goal. At the 2:24 mark, Richards made a good save on a shot by Nickolas Peterson to keep the game tied.  Over the next two minutes, the Trojans kept the pressure on in the NA zone but could not beat Richards.  Schwab took an elbowing penalty with 6:57 remaining, but Frits was sent off forty seconds later when he tripped Rohar who broke in shorthanded.  With Jared Gillespie off for high sticking with 4:26 left, Rohar made a great individual effort on the power play, skating from the right side all the way around to the left circle where he set up Black for the go ahead goal with 3:50 remaining.  The Tiger defense stopped McDowell for the remainder of the contest with good plays by senior captain and defenseman Jake Williams and senior defenseman Tyson Stupy to keep the Trojans away from the NA goal.  With 12 seconds left, Waldschmidt sent a shot into the empty net from just outside the Trojan blue line to seal the win.  With the late rally, the Tigers finished off the 5-3 victory.

It was a good team effort by the Tigers as they rallied twice from one-goal deficits.  Richards was strong in the net particularly early in the third period with the game tied.  For his efforts on the ice and for setting up three NA goals including the game winner, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Dylan Rohar as the Player of the Game.

With the win, NA evened their division record to 2-2 on the season.  The Tigers will travel to the Ice Connection tomorrow night to meet division foe Butler in an 8:30 pm contest.

LATE GOAL GIVES LEBO 4-3 WIN OVER TIGERS

Mt. Lebanon scored with two seconds remaining to defeat the Tigers, 4-3, in the home opener at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Friday night.  Junior Tyler Hagy scored two goals for NA with sophomore Tyler Wright adding the third NA tally.

Neither team could score through the first two periods.  The NA defense played tough in front of sophomore goalie Lindsay Holdcroft who was making her first start as a varsity goalie.

Early in the third period, the Blue Devils scored three quick goals to take a 3-0 lead.  The Tigers rallied to tie the game.  Hagy cut the margin to 3-1 on an assist from junior Patrick Moynihan.  Wright scored to make it a 3-2 game on assists from juniors Bret Schindler and Brady Waldschmidt.  With 18 seconds, Hagy tied the game at 3-3 with Waldschmidt and junior Dylan Rohar assisting.  Lebo got the game winner just sixteen seconds later.  NA outshot Lebo, 24-23 on the game.

The loss dropped the NA division record to 1-2 on the season.  The Tigers will host division rival McDowell on Tuesday night at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 6:30 pm.

MEADVILLE RALLIES TO DEFEAT TIGERS, 6-2

After taking a 1-0 lead on a Thomas Gillespie goal, the Tigers saw Meadville score the next five goals, four by Morgan Nickerson, and defeat NA, 6-2, at Meadville on Monday night.  The goal by Gillespie, on assists from freshman Andrew Black and sophomore Matt Ogle, gave the Tigers an early 1-0 lead.  Nickerson scored on a breakaway to tie the score at 1-1 as the teams went to the first intermission tied.

In the second period, goals by Drew Finton and Nickerson gave the Bulldogs a 3-1 advantage after two periods of play.  Nickerson and William Espy added goals early in the third period to extend the margin to 5-1 before junior Brady Waldschmidt scored for the Tigers on a 5 on 3 power play with seniors Josh Herbert and Jake Williams picking up the assists.  Nickerson added his fourth goal of the game into an empty net with 2:04 remaining to give Meadville the 6-2 victory.

Meadville outshot the Tigers, 22-20, as they won their first game of the year to even their record at 1-1.  NA dropped to 1-1 in division play with the loss.  The Tigers will host Mt. Lebanon a week from Friday in the home opener at Bladerunners in Warrendale.  Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.

TIGERS OPEN SEASON WITH 3-0 SHUTOUT OF NORWIN

by Barbara Richards

The PIHL and State Champion Tigers picked up where they left off last spring winning their season opener Thursday night against Norwin, 3-0, at Center Ice in Delmont on Thursday night.  NA scored twice in the first period and added another in the third as senior goalie Max Richards posted his first shutout of the season.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard quickly as junior forward Brady Waldschmidt scored from juniors Donny Lewis and Brett Schindler on NA's second shot of the game with a quick and apparently unexpected wraparound at 3:23 of the first period.  Then with 2:02 left in opening stanza and Norwin with a 5 on 3 advantage, sophomore Tyler Wright gave the puck to junior Dylan Rohar who took the puck down the left wing boards cut behind the Norwin net and dropped in another wraparound goal to give NA a 2-0 lead.

There was no scoring in the second period but both teams spent plenty of time in the penalty boxes with NA taking a total of 9 sin-bin sits for 18 minutes with 5 roughing penalties high on the list of calls.

In the third period it was all desperation for Norwin as senior Josh Herbert notched the third NA goal with an assist from Rohar.  Richards completed his first shutout of the season for NA robbing Norwin several times in the final two minutes in another 5 on 3 situation. The game finished with one minute and fifteen seconds to curfew due to a broken pane of glass during play in the first period.

With the win, the Tigers opened the new season with a 1-0 record in the division.  NA will travel to Meadville on Monday night for a 7:30 pm division contest against the Bulldogs.

TIGERS BLANK MARS, 2-0, TO WIN ST. MARGARET'S FALL FACE-OFF TOURNAMENT

Led by tournament MVP and senior goalie Max Richards, the Tigers shut out the Mars Planets, 2-0, to win the St. Margaret's Fall Face-Off Tournament at Bladerunners in Harmarville on Thursday night.  In the semifinals, the Tigers and Mt. Lebanon battled to a 3-3 tie through double overtime.  In a shootout, Ryan Worsena got the game winner to send NA to the finals.

In the championship game, neither team could score in the first period thanks to the goaltending of Richards and Mars' Greg Lewis.  Mars outshot NA, 8-7, in the period.  In the second period, the Planets again outshot NA, 10-6, and outplayed the Tigers.  Thanks to Richards, who made two diving saves against Jake Robash late in the period, the game remained scoreless going into the final period.

The Tigers finally came alive in the third period.  Despite outshooting the Planets, 13-5, Mars had the first great chance when Robash stole the puck and skated in all alone on Richards who made the save with 8:03 remaining.  Just 15 seconds later, Worsena was able to poke in a rebound of a shot by senior Josh Herbert to give NA a 1-0 advantage with 7:48 left.  Lewis stopped Thomas Gillespie with 6:20 remaining to keep it a one-goal game.  Mars went on a power play with 2:39 left but the Tiger defense was there.  Patrick Moynihan added an empty net goal with 29 seconds left to give NA the 2-0 victory and their 5th St. Margaret's Tournament Championship.

Richards made 23 saves in the final and was named the recipient of the Arthur Scully Award for the Most Valuable Player.

On Wednesday, junior Dylan Rohar scored with two seconds left to give the Tigers a 4-3 come from behind victory over Franklin Regional in the St. Margaret's Fall Face-Off Tournament at Bladerunners in Harmarville on Wednesday afternoon.  After the Panthers had taken a 3-2 lead early in the period on a goal by Patrick Coyne, NA's junior forward Brady Waldschmidt tied the score.  With the win, the Tigers moved into the semifinal round and will play either Mars or Mt. Lebanon this afternoon.  Game time is set for 4:00 pm at Bladerunners in Harmarville.

On Tuesday,  Rohar scored four goals and senior forward Josh Herbert added two more as the Tigers rolled over Plum, 7-2, in the St. Margaret's Fall Face-Off Tournament at Bladerunners in Harmarville on Tuesday.  The Tigers will meet Franklin Regional this afternoon at 3:30 pm in the final game of pool play.

On Monday, the Tigers lost to North Hills, 4-3, despite a pair of goals by Herbert.
