WHELAN, LARIMORE TAKE SILVER AT PIAA DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP

The Tigers doubles team of freshman Kelly Whelan and junior Jen Larimore advanced to the final of the PIAA Class AAA Doubles Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Hershey Racquet Club in Hershey.  In the final, the NA duo lost to Peters Township's Julie Stroyne and Emily Palko, 6-3, 6-2.  In the semifinal that was played earlier in the day, Whelan and Larimore defeated Jamie and Rachel Fein of Wissahickon, 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the final.

On Friday, Whelan and Larimore won two matches at the Hershey Racquet Club on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the PIAA Class AAA Doubles tournament.  In the first round, Whelan and Larimore downed Erin Farrell and Gwen Alicknavitch of Kennett, 6-1, 6-4.  In the quarterfinals, the NA team defeated Alexa Gregory and Corinne Jones of State College, 6-1, 6-3.

LADY TIGERS FALL TO HEMPFIELD,
3-2, IN PIAA QUARTERFINALS

Freshman Kelly Whelan won at #1 singles and the #1 NA doubles team of junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello was victorious, but the Lady Tigers dropped a 3-2 decision to Hempfield (District 3) in the PIAA Class AAA quarterfinals at the Hershey Racquet Club on Friday afternoon.  The loss ended the NA season with a final record of 19-4. 

The WPIAL Class AAA doubles champion team of freshman Kelly Whelan and junior Jen Larimore will compete in the PIAA Class AAA championships next weekend at the Hershey Racquet Club.  Action is scheduled to begin on Friday with the semifinals and finals on Saturday.

LADY TIGERS BLANK McDOWELL, 5-0, IN FIRST
ROUND OF PIAA TEAM PLAYOFFS

The Lady Tigers traveled to Erie on Tuesday afternoon and came home with a 5-0 victory over McDowell in the first round of the PIAA Team Tennis playoffs.  NA won all five matches in straight sets, losing only five games in the match.  Freshman Kelly Whelan led the way with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Kelsey Matos at #1 singles.  Sophomore Stephanie Smyers at #2 and freshman Lisha Gu at #3 followed suit with straight set victories.

The NA doubles teams completed the shutout with victories.  At #1, junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello took a 6-0, 6-0 victory over the Trojan team of Marisa Short and Rickie Zoth.  At number two doubles, the team of senior Stephanie Keiser and junior Cody McCoy lost only one game in sweeping the Trojans.

With the win, the Lady Tigers advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament where they will meet Hempfield (District 3) at the Hershey Racquet Club on Friday.  Match time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

SHADY SIDE TOPS LADY TIGERS, 4-1, FOR WPIAL TITLE

The Shady Side Academy Indians defeated the Lady Tigers, 4-1, at Lakevue Athletic Club on Friday afternoon to win the WPIAL Class AAA title.  The #1 NA doubles team of junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello defeated Merideth Lackey and Alexis Georgiadis, 6-1, 6-2 for the Lady Tigers' point.

In the #1 singles, WPIAL singles champion Lauren Greco defeated freshman Kelly Whelan, 6-1 and 6-1.  At number two singles, Bobbilyn Anthony downed sophomore Stephanie Smyers while SSA's Sara Perelman was victorious over Lisha Gu at the number three singles position.  In the number two doubles match, Jen Cozen and Joanie Hilton defeated NA's senior Stephanie Keiser and junior Cody McCoy.

The title was the second straight for Shady Side while the Lady Tigers were appearing in their first title match.  The loss dropped the overall NA record to 18-3.  Both teams qualified for the PIAA tournament which will begin on Tuesday.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Erie to meet McDowell at the Pennbriar Tennis Club with the starting time set at 1:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS TOP PINE-RICHLAND, 4-1, TO

The Lady Tigers defeated section rival Pine-Richland, 4-1, at Lakevue Athletic Club in Valencia on Thursday afternoon to advance to the WPIAL championship.  In singles play, freshman Kelly Whelan defeated Sarah Lynch, 6-0, 6-4, and freshman Lisha Gu won a 6-3, 6-3 decision.

Both NA doubles teams came through with victories.  At #1 doubles, the Tiger team of junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello swept the P-R team of Kunkele and O'Donnell, 6-1, 6-0.  After losing the first set to the Ram team of Marks and Paluch, the number two NA team of senior Stephanie Keiser and junior Cody McCoy came back to win the next two.

With the win, the Lady Tigers will play for the title this afternoon at Lakevue.  Match time is set for 2:30 pm.

LADY TIGERS EDGE MT. LEBANON, 3-2, TO ADVANCE

The Lady Tigers downed Mt. Lebanon, 3-2, at the Senior High courts on Wednesday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the WPIAL Class AAA tournament.  Singles wins by freshmen Kelly Whelan and the NA doubles teams ensured the victory.

Whelan was victorious when her Lebo opponent had to default in the second set with Whelan leading, 1-0, thanks to a 6-1 victory in the first set.  In doubles play, the #1 team of junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory.  At number two doubles. senior Stephanie Keiser and junior Cody McCoy took a 6-4, 6-2 win.

With the victory, the Lady Tigers advance to the semifinals where they will meet section rival Pine-Richland this afternoon at Lakevue Athletic Club in Valencia.  Match time is set for 1:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS SHUT OUT SHALER, 5-0, IN FIRST

The Lady Tigers did not lose a game on their way to a 5-0 victory over Shaler at the Senior High courts on Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs.  In singles play, freshman Kelly Whelan, sophomore Stephanie Smyers and freshman Lisha Gu led with way with 6-0, 6-0 wins.

The NA doubles teams followed suit with shutout victories as the #1 team of junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello was victorious along with the #2 team of senior Stephanie Keiser and junior Cody McCoy. Both victories were by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

The Lady Tigers will meet Mt. Lebanon, a 4-1 winner over Latrobe, in the today's quarterfinal match at the Senior High courts.  Match time is set for 3:00 pm.

WHELAN AND LARIMORE WIN WPIAL DOUBLES TITLE

Freshman Kelly Whelan and junior Jen Larimore rallied in the third set to win the WPIAL Doubles Championship on Friday afternoon at Shady Side Academy.  After winning the first set, 6-1, the Tiger duo dropped the second set to Peters Township's Julie Stroyne and Emily Palko, 6-4.  Whelan and Larimore took the third set, 6-3, to capture the title.

The Lady Tiger team will host Shaler on Tuesday afternoon in the opening round of the WPIAL Team Playoffs.  Match time at the Senior High courts is set for 3:00 pm.

THURSDAY'S RESULTS
The top NA team of freshman Kelly Whelan and junior Jen Larimore won two matches on Thursday afternoon at the Lakevue Athletic Club to advance to the finals of the WPIAL Class AAA Doubles Tournament.  After earning the #1 seed and being given a bye in the first round, Whelan and Larimore defeated Liz Hough and Katie Liss of Upper St. Clair, 10-6, in the quarterfinals.  In the semifinals, the Tiger duo downed Carly Small and Sarah Baich of Mt. Lebanon, 6-3, 6-3.

The number two Tiger team of sophomores Amanda Maiello and Stephanie Smyers lost to Emily McGinty and Katie Healy of Mt. Lebanon, 10-7, in the first round.

DOUBLES TOURNAMENT

LADY TIGERS FINISH OFF LATROBE, 4-1,
IN SEASON FINALE

The Lady Tigers defeated Latrobe, 4-1, in the a non-section match as the regular season came to an end at the Senior High courts on Wednesday afternoon. 

In singles play, junior Lisa Gorski was a winner at #2 while freshman Lisha Gu took a 6-1, 6-2 victory at #3.  Both Tiger doubles teams were victorious.  At #1, junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello won a 6-0, 6-1 decision while at senior Stephanie Keiser and junior Cody McCoy won by a 6-1, 6-1 score at #2 doubles.

With the win, NA finished the regular season with a record of 16-2.  The Lady Tigers will compete in the WPIAL Team Playoffs that will begin next week.  This afternoon the top two Tiger doubles teams will be in action in the WPIAL Tournament.  Action is scheduled to get under way at 12:30 pm this afternoon at the Senior High courts.

JV UPDATE:  The Junior Varsity team completed their season with a 5-0 victory over Latrobe.  Congratulations to the JV squad as they finished with a final record of 14-1!

LADY TIGERS KNOCK OFF NORTH HILLS, 5-0, TO TIE FOR SECTION TITLE

The Lady Tigers defeated North Hills, 5-0, at the Senior High courts on Monday afternoon to complete their section schedule with a 13-1 record.  In singles competition, freshman Kelly Whelan, sophomore Stephanie Smyers, and freshman Lisha Gu all won in straight sets.

In double play, the #1 team of junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello downed the Indian team of Waters and Held, 6-1, 6-1.  At #2 doubles, it was the team of senior Stephanie Keiser and junior Cody McCoy with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the team of Ganter and Bright, 6-2, 6-1.

With the win, NA finished in a tie with Pine-Richland for the section title.  The WPIAL Team Playoffs are scheduled to begin next week.  The Lady Tigers will host Latrobe tomorrow afternoon in the final non-section match of the season with the starting time set for 4:00 pm.

FRIDAY'S RESULTS

Both Tiger doubles teams advanced to the finals of the Section Doubles tournament at the Senior High courts on Thursday afternoon.  The #1 team of freshman Kelly Whelan and junior Jen Larimore defeated a team from Pine-Richland in the quarterfinals and a team from Butler in the semis.  The #2 team of sophomores Stephanie Smyers and Amanda Maiello won their quarterfinal match and defeated Pine-Richland in the semifinals.

LADY TIGERS EDGE PINE-RICHLAND, 3-2, TO MOVE INTO TIE FOR FIRST PLACE

Victories by both doubles teams gave the Lady Tigers a 3-2 victory over Pine-Richland at Pine-Richland on Wednesday afternoon.  The victory avenged an earlier loss to the Rams and moved NA into a first place tie.  In singles play, freshman Kelly Whelan won over Sarah Lynch who defaulted in the third set because of injury.

In doubles play, the #1 NA team of junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello defeated the Ram team of Kunkele and O'Donnell, 6-1, 6-0.  At #2 doubles, it was the team of senior Stephanie Keiser and junior Cody McCoy with the 6-3, 6-1 victory.

With the win, the NA section record improved to 12-1, the overall mark to 14-2.  Section doubles competition will get under way this afternoon at the Senior High courts with the action scheduled to start at 12:30 pm.

The loss dropped the overall NA record to 13-2.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Pine-Richland this afternoon for a key section match with the section title at stake.  Pine-Richland edged NA, 3-2, earlier in the season.  The starting time this afternoon is set for 3:30 pm.

The Lady Tigers shut out Butler, 5-0, at Butler on Monday afternoon for their eighth consecutive victory.  NA again won in straight sets as they downed the Tornado for the second time this season.  In singles play, freshman Kelly Whelan was victorious at #1 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory with sophomore Stephanie Smyers at #2 and freshman Lisha Gu at #3 also posting wins.

In doubles play, the NA #1 team of junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello continued their strong play with a 6-0, 6-2 win over the Butler team of Shetter and Kerr.  At #2 doubles, senior Stephanie Keiser and junior Cody McCoy were winners over Roccki and Sylvia from Butler.

The Lady Tigers improved the section record to 11-1 with the win and their overall mark to 13-1.  NA will travel to Shady Side Academy this afternoon for a non-section match with the Indians.  Tomorrow afternoon, the Lady Tigers will visit Pine-Richland for the section showdown.  Match time today is 4:15 pm with tomorrow's match scheduled for a 3:30 pm start.

JV UPDATE:  The Junior Varsity squad continued their winning ways with a 5-0 win over Butler.  With the win, the JV record improved to 10-1 on the season.

Freshman Kelly Whelan defeated Liz Hough of Upper St. Clair in the opening round of the WPIAL Singles Tournament on Thursday afternoon but dropped a 10-4 decision to Julie Stroyne of Peters Township in the quarterfinals at Lakevue Racquet Club.  Lauren Greco of Shady Side Academy will meet Sarah Lynch of Pine-Richland in the final this afternoon at Shady Side Academy.

The Lady Tigers will travel to Butler on Monday afternoon to meet the Tornado in a section match.  The starting time is set for 3:30 pm.

SINGLES TOURNAMENT

LADY TIGERS SWEEP MARS IN STRAIGHT SETS, 5-0

The Lady Tigers defeated the Mars Planets, 5-0, at the Senior High courts on Wednesday afternoon winning in straight sets and losing only three total games.  In singles play, NA did not lose a game in sweeping the competition.  Freshman Kelly Whelan, sophomore Stephanie Smyers, and freshman Lishu Gu all won by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

In doubles play, the #1 NA team of junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello continue to dominate with a 6-0, 6-0 win over the Mars team of Barners and Smail.  At #2, senior Stephanie Keiser and junior Cody McCoy took a 6-2, 6-1 decision over the team of Then and Andrascik.

With the win, the Lady Tigers improved their section record to 10-1, the overall mark to 12-1 on the season.  Freshman Kelly Whelan will begin play in the WPIAL Singles Tournament this afternoon when she meets Liz Hough of Upper St. Clair.  The match is scheduled for 1:00 pm at the NA Senior High courts.

The Lady Tigers stepped out of section play on Tuesday afternoon with a 4-1 win over Upper St. Clair at the Senior High courts.  NA won all three singles matches led by sophomore Stephanie Smyers with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at #2 singles.  Both NA freshmen were victorious with Kelly Whelan and Lisha Gu also winning their maches.

In doubles play, junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello downed the Panther team of Borst and Russell, 7-5 and 6-2, in the #1 match.

With the win, NA improved their overall record to 11-1 on the year.  The Lady Tigers will host Mars this afternoon in a 3:30 pm section match at the Senior High courts.

The Lady Tigers shut out Seneca Valley, 5-0, at the Senior High courts on Monday afternoon to improve their section record to 9-1.  In singles play, NA lost only one game in sweeping the singles competition in straight sets.  Freshman Kelly Whelan, sophomore Stephanie Smyers, and freshman Lisha Gu were all victorious for the winning Lady Tigers.

In doubles play, the #1 team of junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello downed the Raider team of Maxson and Ryan, 6-0 and 6-1.  At #2 doubles, senior Stephanie Keiser and junior Cody McCoy were also victorious in straight sets without losing a game.

NA will meet Upper St. Clair this afternoon in a 3:30 pm non-section match.  Tomorrow, the Lady Tigers will host Mars as section play resumes.  Match time is set for 3:30 pm.

WHELAN FALLS IN SECTION SINGLES FINAL

Freshman Kelly Whelan was defeated by Sarah Lynch of Pine-Richland in the finals of the WPIAL Class AAA Section 2 Singles Tournament at the Senior High courts on Friday afternoon.  Whelan won the first set, 6-0, only to see Lynch rally to win the next two, 6-3 and 6-3.  Sophomore Stephanie Smyers lost to Olivia Heim of Pine-Richland in the consolation final, 6-0 and 6-1.  Whelan has qualified for the WPIAL Class AAA Singles Championships that will begin next Thursday.

The Lady Tiger team will be back in action again on Monday when they host Seneca Valley in a section match.  The starting time at the Senior High courts is set for 3:30 pm.

THURSDAY'S SUMMARY

Freshman Kelly Whelan won three matches in the Section 2 Singles Tournament at the Senior High courts on Thursday afternoon to advance to the finals.  Whelan defeated Jenna Kantermann of Knoch, 10-1, in the first round before knocking off Emma Crist of Hampton, 10-0, in the quarterfinals.  In semifinal action, Whelan defeated Olivia Heim of Pine-Richland, 6-2, 7-6 (3).  The NA freshman will meet Sarah Lynch of Pine-Richland in the championship match this afternoon.

Sophomore Stephanie Smyers downed Lauren Lagamba of Seneca Valley, 10-0, in the opening round.  In the quarterfinals, Smyers defeated Carolyn Shetter of Butler, 10-2, before falling in the quarterfinals to Lynch, 6-0, 6-1.  Smyers will face Heim in the consolation match today.

Whelan has already qualified for the WPIAL Singles Championships, but Smyers needs a win in the consolation final to advance.  Action is scheduled to get underway at 1:00 pm this afternoon at the Senior High courts.

LADY TIGERS BLANK KNOCH, 5-0

The Lady Tigers improved their section record to 8-1 with a 5-0 shutout of the Knoch Knights at Knoch on Wednesday afternoon.  NA swept the singles competition without losing a match.  Freshman Kelly Whelan continued her winning ways with a 6-0, 6-0 victory of Bethany Soloski.  At #2 singles, sophomore Stephanie Smyers won by 6-0, 6-0 scores against Jessica Protzman while freshman Lisha Gu did the same against Loren Vonrhein at the #3 singles position.

In doubles play, the #1 team of junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello continued to roll with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Sarah Cypher and Jenna Kanterman.  At #2 doubles, senior Gabby Gambino teamed up with senior Yilu Zhang to defeat Emily Sak and Kristen Gagen, 6-2, 6-2.

The WPIAL Section Singles Tournament will be held on the Senior High courts today and tomorrow.  The Lady Tiger team will be back in action on Monday when they host Seneca Valley in a 3:30 pm section match.

HAMPTON FALLS TO LADY TIGERS, 5-0

The Lady Tigers began the second half of their section schedule in a positive manner with a 5-0 victory over Hampton at the Senior High courts on Monday afternoon.  In singles play, NA lost only two games in sweeping the Talbots.  Freshman Kelly Whelan led the way with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Emma Crist.  Sophomore Stephanie Smyers at #2 and freshman Lisha Gu also won straight set victories.

In doubles play, the #1 team of junior Jen Larimore and sophomore Amanda Maiello continued their fine play with a 6-0, 6-0 whitewash of the Talbot team of Goresan and Quigley.  The number two doubles team of senior Stephanie Keiser and junior Cody McCoy also won in straight sets.

With the win, NA improved their section record to 7-1, the overall mark to 8-1.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Knoch tomorrow afternoon for a 3:30 pm section match.

2007 WPIAL GIRLS' TENNIS

The Lady Tigers will compete again in Class AAA of the WPIAL along with 37 other teams.  Three teams from each section will qualify for participation in the WPIAL team championships when section play is completed.  Ties in section records for first place will not be broken and both teams will enter the tournament and be declared section co-champs.  Each team will receive a section champion plaque.  In the event of a tie for first place, the second place team will enter as the third section representative.  Ties and second and third place will be broken by head-to-head competition.  If a tie persists after the head-to-head format is applied, both teams will enter the team playoffs.  Three-way ties will be broken in the following manner:

1.  Section won-lost records of the tied teams will be compiled.
2.  The team with the best won-loss record among the tied teams will enter the team tournament.
3.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter the tournament. 

The PIAA will conduct a team championship and the WPIAL will advance two teams to the tournament.

In all section matches and WPIAL competition, the seven-player team concept will be followed.  Each team will have three singles players and two teams of doubles players for each match.  No player can participate in both singles and doubles on the same day.  A player can be changed from singles play on one day to doubles play for the next.  All teams must field a minimum of six players.  Failure to field six players will result in a forfeit victory for the opponent provided they have at least six players ready to play.  If the team match ends in a tie, a USTA twelve point tie breaker will be played between the first singles players (for that day) to determine the team winner.  No substitutes will be permitted in the tiebreaker.

Coaches must play their best player of the three singles players designated for each match at the number one singles position, second best at number two and third best at number three.  The same format must also be used in placing doubles teams in the lineup.

Scoring will be traditional --- the best of three sets.  If the score reaches "six-all" in any set, a twelve-point tiebreaker shall determine a winner in that set.  This system must be followed in all section matches and WPIAL playoffs. 

INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The WPIAL will advance two singles players and three sets of doubles teams to the PIAA championships.  Section qualifiers will be held for singles and doubles.  Each school may enter two singles players and two doubles teams.  Sectional matches will be determined by pro sets until the semi-finals.  In the semi-finals, final and third place qualifying matches, the three set format will be used.  Three players/doubles teams will advance to the WPIAL championship round from each section qualifier.  The fourth place fiisher will serve as the alternate and will play in the event of a withdrawal by any of the first three place winners.

The WPIAL championship tournament will be contested in a two day period as scheduled.  The WPIAL Office will render decision to move championship tournament indoors on each scheduled date if inclement weather prevails.
