SENIOR NAMED TO USROWING by Donna Hudson Senior rower Brian Marcus is among 36 student-athletes from across the United States named to the 2007-2008 USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll. The USRowing Scholastic Honor Roll recognizes high school seniors who have excelled in both academics and rowing. Applicants must be USRowing members, have rowed or coxed for at least one year, and have successfully competed at or above the league or regional level. This is the 17th year of this award. Winners were selected based on academic grades, SAT or ACT scores and class rank. USRowing is a nonprofit organization recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States. Marcus, a top student in the North Allegheny Class of 2008, has been part of NA crews who claimed medals at the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007, as well as at USRowing Club National Championships in 2005 and 2006. He plans to continue to row in college, where he intends to study chemistry and eventually attend medical school. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER ROWERS TAKE FIVE MEDALS AT HEAD OF OHIO By Donna Hudson Saturday, October 6, 2007 Coach Mike Bergen’s Tigers rowed tough right from the start at Saturday’s 21st Head of the Ohio Regatta. They started the day by capturing back-to-back gold medals in the Men’s and Women’s High School Doubles events. They added three more medals in the afternoon by taking the silver in both the Men’s and Women’s High School Quads and the bronze in the men’s event. Head of the Ohio is a major fall rowing event held on a 2.6 mile course along Pittsburgh’s Allegheny River. Over 80 high school, college, club and corporate teams from 15 US states and Canadian provinces took part in this year’s regatta. In winning their medals, NA bettered competition that included local crews from Fox Chapel, Upper St. Clair, Central Catholic, North Catholic, Shaler, Winchester Thurston and Ellis. NA’s men’s and women’s quads were both edged out for the gold by very experienced crews from St. Catherine’s, a Canadian club program, making NA the top-finishing US crews in both events. The Tigers next will host Steel City Rowing Club and other invited teams for a scrimmage at NA’s boathouse on Saturday, October 20. ROWING CAMP SUMMER MEMBERS by Donna Hudson Saturday, July 14, 2007 The North Allegheny Summer Sculling Camp members joined 32 other high school and club teams for some warm weather competition at the Philadelphia Youth Regatta last weekend. The event, billed as “The World’s Most Laid Back Regatta”, brought together teams from 31 cities in 10 states on the Schuylkill River. The Tigers came away with two silver medals and one bronze medal, as well as valuable experience in racing smaller boats and in different racing styles. The optional NA summer camp is headed by NA assistant coach Jonathan Mohan, who noted, “This was a great chance to let our novice rowers experience racing in sculling events and to give some of our varsity rowers a chance to try events in which they had little or no experience. We raced against tough East Coast club teams and performed very well.” NA also had two team members competing at the event as part of a summer camp at The Boston Rowing Club. They added another silver medal to the NA list. The NA summer sculling program will send 11 boats to the USRowing Club National Championships in Cooper River, NJ later this week. Incoming NA 8th, 9th and 10th graders interested in the sport of rowing are invited to two free learn-to-row camps hosted by the NA Rowing Team. Those will be held August 4th and August 25th at the team’s boathouse. See the team’s website, www.narowing.org, for more information and directions. Full results: 2nd Place
