PETERS TOWNSHIP TOPS TIGERS, 3-1, IN FIRST ROUND OF PLAYOFFS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The #2 ranked Peters Township Indians took a 2-1 lead at halftime, added another goal early in the second half, and went on to a 3-1 victory over the Tigers in the rain on Tuesday night at Peters Township Stadium in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA tournament.  Junior forward Andrew McIlvried scored the NA goal that tied the game midway through the first half.

Peters Township started quickly with Shane Pruitt breaking down the right side and shooting the ball into the side of the net just 50 seconds into the game.  NA came back with a pair of chances in the next minute with McIlvried having a shot blocked from the left shot and senior defender Brian White sending a direct kick into the box that was cleared.  Pruitt came back with a direct kick over the goal from 30 yards away at the 5:43 mark.  Less than two minutes later, a header by the Indians went wide of the NA goal. The Tigers had a chance at the 8:58 mark when junior J.P. Fulton sent a corner kick into the box, but junior Danny Crawford headed it over the game.  NA had another chance on a direct kick by junior defender Evan Cullen, but the Indian defense cleared the attempt.  Peters Township took a 1-0 lead at the 13:41 mark when Sheafer sent home a rebound from 25 yards in the middle after the Tigers had blocked two previous shots.  Exactly one minute later, Christian Brandstetter was pulled down from behind in the box and was given a penalty kick.  Senior NA goalkeeper Mike Brunner made a diving save to keep it a one-goal game.  At the 16:35 mark, White drove another long attempt on a direct kick, but it was caught by PT goalkeeper Ryan Koepka.  Pruitt had a direct kick for the Indians from 28 yards away two minutes later, but his attempt was cleared.  After a yellow card was given to the Tigers, NA came back to equalize with 14:13 remaining in the half.  Fulton made a nice move down the left side and sent a perfect pass to a breaking McIlvried.  The NA junior cleanly beat the Indian keeper to tie the game at 1-1.  The Tigers had a chance to take the lead four minutes later, but a header by senior Adam Sharpnack went over the goal.  The Indians gained the lead back a minute later when Nick Wilcox made a nice move around two NA defenders and beat Brunner with a left-footed shot into the right corner with 8:05 remaining in the half.  Cullen had another long attempt off a direct kick but the Indians were able to stop and clear the ball.  With 5:08 remaining, Pruitt sent a corner kick toward the NA goal, but the Tiger defense cleared the ball out of the box.  Neither team had scoring chances in the remaining time, and Peters Township took a 2-1 advantage to the intermission.

Early in the second half, both teams played cautiously with no scoring attempts.  At the 5:51 mark, the Indians were able to convert a corner kick when Mark Majoras headed the ball into the net to give PT a 3-1 lead.  From this point, the Indian defense took over.  Peters Township had not allowed a goal since September 29 prior to the first half NA score, and they showed why in the second half.  At the 8:35 mark, the Tigers had a chance on a cross by Fulton that was headed by Sharpnack right to the PT keeper.  After a yellow card was issued to the Indians, Sharpnack had another chance just outside the 18, but his attempt was blocked by the defense.  Just past the midway point of the half, White had a direct kick from 25 yards that went wide to the right of the PT goal.  Two minutes later, Brunner was forced to come out of the box to beat a pair of breaking Indian players to the ball.  A direct kick by Brandstetter from 20 yards was cleared by the Tigers.  NA earned a corner kick with 13:15 remaining but the attempt by junior Rafael Bretz missed the goal.  Two minutes later, Peters almost scored again when Brandstetter set up Wilcox, but Brunner made a diving save.  Down the stretch the game became more physical with the Tigers picking up a yellow and red card.  With 6:00 remaining, senior forward David Gettemy drove a hard shot that was stopped by Koepka.  The Indians had two final chances but did not score.  Brandstetter hit the left post with 2:25 left and then sent a cross through the box that just missed the left corner.  The Tigers could not mount any scoring chances down the stretch as Peters Township took the 3-1 victory.

It was a good effort by the Tigers against a physical, talented Peters Township team.  Corner kicks stood at four for Peters and three for the Tigers.  The goal near the end of the first half was big after NA had tied the game.  For scoring the only NA goal of the game, the only score against PT in almost a month, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Andrew McIlvried as the Player of the Game.

The loss ended the Tigers season as they finished with a final record of 8-11-2.  Peters Township will move on in the tournament and play Fox Chapel tomorrow night.

CRAWFORD'S OVERTIME GOAL GIVES TIGERS
3-2 WIN OVER FOX CHAPEL

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Junior midfielder Danny Crawford blasted a long shot into the net from 35 yards out with 3:10 remaining in the second overtime period to give the Tigers a 3-2 victory over #5 Fox Chapel at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  NA never trailed in the game with senior MF Justin Facer and junior forward Andrew McIlvried scoring the first two Tiger goals.

Both teams started slowly with the first shot coming at the 11:56 mark when Crawford shot wide from 30 yards away.  Fox Chapel earned a corner kick at the 13:16 mark, but the Tiger defense cleared the attempt.  After a long run by McIlvried, senior forward Kenny Nakajima had his shot blocked in the box at the 15:04 mark.  FC''s Salvatore Certo came back less than a minute later to send a long attempt that was caught on the fly by NA senior goalkeeper Mike Brunner.  The Foxes' Tracy Banas intercepted an NA pass and forced Brunner to make a diving save at the 17:08 mark.  The Tigers finally broke through when Facer drilled a long shot from 30 yards that deflected off a FC defender into the net to give NA a 1-0 advantage at the 25:08 mark.  The Tigers continued the offensive pressure when Crawford's hard shot was blocked and then covered by the FC goalkeeper, Michael Lucas, with 13:33 remaining in the half.  Facer had another good chance from long range but sent it wide with 7:22 left.  Less than a minute later, senior defender Brian White made a diving tackle in the box to take the ball away from Jon Moore.  With 2:15 left, Moore was stopped by Brunner from close range with junior defender Evan Cullen clearing the rebound.  A run down the left side by McIlvried resulted in an NA corner kick with 2:13 left, but the Foxes denied the chance.  With just 15 seconds left, the Fox Chapel defense blocked a shot by Facer from inside the 18.  Time ran out in the half with the Tigers taking a 1-0 lead to the intermission.

Early in the second half, Fox Chapel applied offensive pressure looking for the equalizer.  Cullen took the ball off the foot of Banas at the 18 just 2:35 into the half.  Two minutes later, James Troutman sent a cross into the box that Brunner caught.  A corner kick by Fox Chapel at the 9:51 mark was cleared by the NA defense.  The Tigers came close two minutes later when Facer set up McIlvried for a shot in close that was stopped by Lucas on a diving save.  Lucas was injured and had to leave the game but returned later in the half.  At the 16:28 mark, the Foxes tied the game off a corner kick when Banas was able to head in a perfect set from Troutman.  Less than three minutes later, the Foxes had another chance off a corner, but the NA defense was able to clear the ball.  With 15:34 remaining, Fox Chapel sent a long attempt in on one hop that was stopped by Brunner.  Cullen sent a long direct kick toward the goal a minute later that Lucas had to punch away.  Banas came close to putting the Foxes ahead with two good shots.  After Brunner stopped the first attempt from just inside the 18, the Tiger keeper made a diving stop on the rebound with 13:47 remaining in the second half.  Senior MF Patrick Fives countered with a shot from 20 yards that was caught by Lucas with 11:27 remaining.  The Tigers regained the lead on a direct kick at the 30:03 mark.  White sent a long ball to the far post that McIlvried went high to head into the goal to give NA a 2-1 lead.  After the Tigers came close on two additional shots, Fox Chapel tied the game on a header by Moore with 4:33 remaining in the half.  Down the stretch, the Foxes had two corner kicks in the last minute but could not convert.  The game went to extra time with the score tied at 2-2.

The Tigers had the first scoring chance 2:35 into overtime when Facer sent another hard shot toward the FC goal that was blocked and then covered by Lucas.  A direct kick by FC from 26 yards at the 5:57 mark missed the goal.  Another FC direct kick by Andy Feiler was caught by Brunner.  The Foxes kept up the pressure when Brunner was forced to make another save with 3:25 left in the first OT.  A direct kick by Feiler was stopped with 2:33 remaining.  A final corner kick by the Foxes was cleared in the final minute as the Tigers held on to force a second overtime period.  Fox Chapel had four corner kicks in the first overtime.

In the second overtime period, it was NA who came alive.  A corner kick just 1:25 into the period was cleared by the FC defense.  Finally, with 3:50 left, Crawford drilled the game winner high into the left corner to give the Tigers a 3-2 victory.

It was a good effort by the Tigers against a quality opponent.  Fox Chapel finished with eight corner kicks to three by NA, but the Tiger defense was able to control the Foxes for most of the contest.  For his effort in scoring the winning goal and playing well all night in the midfield, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Danny Crawford as the Player of the Game.

With the win, NA finished the regular season with an overall record of 8-10-2.  The loss was only the second of the year for the Foxes who finished at 12-2-4.  The Tigers came in third in section play and have qualified for the WPIAL playoffs.  The WPIAL pairings meeting will be held tonight and will be broadcast  LIVE on the MSA Sports Network beginning at 6:30 pm.  The date, site, time and opponent for the Tigers will be announced at this time.

TIGERS EDGE NORTH HILLS, 2-1, TO CLAIM
 FINAL PLAYOFF SPOT

by John Fulton

The Tigers avenged their prior overtime loss to North Hills with a 2 – 1 section win last night at Martorelli Stadium to clinch the final playoff slot in Section 2.

As has been the trend throughout the season, North Allegheny played possession soccer throughout most of the game.  Less than a minute into the contest, NA had their first opportunity to take the lead when Brian White placed a direct kick onto goal from the 35 yard line.  Mike Brunner came up big with a save at 4:30 when the Indians pushed into the box.  At 8:50 Andrew McIlvried placed a cross to the top of the 18 that was knocked away.  The Tigers continued to pressure when less than one minute later, Raphael Bretz shot a rope wide left of the North Hills keeper.  At 12:30 Pat Fives made a run down the right side and crossed to McIlvried who turned and put the ball on net; however, the NH keeper came up with a big save to keep the game scoreless.  At 19:30 JP Fulton played a volley off his chest into the box that was cleared by the North Hills defense and resulted in a corner kick.  Fulton served the ball to 6 where Adam Sharpnack barely missed with a header over the cross bar.  At 20:00 the Indians pushed their attack into the Tigers zone that resulted in the first score of the game.  At 20:30 Phil Briggs made a nice tackle outside the 18 to deny a run by the Indians.  At 23:30 Brunner came out of the net to deny a corner kick.  Momentum began to change in favor of the Tigers when Bretz served up a corner kick that McIlvried headed past the NH keeper to tie the game at 1 – 1.  With less than one minute to play in the half, Latham Louco made a nice run into the box from the left wing that was knocked away the Indians keeper.

Seven minutes into the 2nd half, Briggs came up big with two tackles to deny the NH forwards.  North Hills continued to pressure the NA defense when Evan Cullen made a clearing tackle along the right side.  At 13:00 Danny Crawford put a well placed shot just wide of the Indians keeper.  At 22:00 Bretz placed a corner kick into the box where Crawford skied above the defense on a header that barely missed the target.  Two minutes later the Tigers would take the lead for good when Fulton made a run along the left wing and was tackled from behind.  The foul resulted in a direct kick from the 25 yard line.  Fulton crossed the ball off the set play to David Gettemy who headed the ball past the North Hills keeper to give NA a 2 – 1 lead.  At 31:30 White came up big with a clearance and run to the 30 yard line where he drove a shot over the cross bar.  The North Hills offense continued to push forward when Briggs came up with a goal saving tackle in the box to knock the ball away.  The contest ended in a 2 – 1 victory and an invitation to the playoffs.  NA returns to play on Saturday against Plum in a non-section contest.

For his play Phil Briggs was selected as the NA Player of the Game.

OVERTIME GOAL BEATS TIGERS, 1-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Butler's Jacob Huey scored 1:29 into the second overtime to give the Tornado a 1-0 victory over the Tigers at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  The loss seemingly knocked NA out of playoff contention, but Shaler had to forfeit five wins because of an ineligible player.  As a result, the Tigers will travel to North Hills tomorrow night with the winner going to the WPIAL playoffs.

Both teams had scoring opportunities early before defense took over.  Senior forward David Gettemy sent a hard shot toward the Butler goal that was stopped by Tornado GK Zeke O'Donnell just 1:20 into the game.  Butler came back to drive another long attempt from 35 yards that NA senior goalkeeper Mike Brunner stopped after a short hop at the 4:37 mark.  Huey had a chance three minutes later, but his shot was blocked by junior defender Pete Schweers and the rebound was sent wide.  Junior Rafael Bretz shot wide right from 20 yards at the 12:20 mark.  A cross by senior Latham Luoco was cleared by the Butler defense less than a minute later.  Huey came back for the Tornado and blasted a long shot from 40 yards over the NA goal.  Butler's Jake Gamble stole the ball and missed wide left just past the midway point of the half.  Junior forward Andrew McIlvried sent a cross from the left side that was caught by O'Donnell with 17:55 remaining in the half.  Butler defender Matt Kreutzer drove a long attempt from 25 yards at the 13:12 mark, but Brunner made the save.  Less than a minute later, Brunner had to come out and cover the ball as Gamble was bearing down on the NA goal.  Butler had another chance when Ryan Hohn set up Ryan Armahizer but he shot wide with 8:46 left.  Both teams were given yellow cards in the next several minutes as the physical play heated up.  With 6:17 remaining, Brunner had to make a diving save on Armahizer to keep the game scoreless.  With 2:51 remaining, the Tigers earned a corner kick with senior Kenny Nakajima deflecting an NA attempt right to O'Donnell who made the save.  A long direct kick by the Tornado was caught by Brunner with 1:45 remaining.  There were no further scoring attempts as the teams went to the intermission with a scoreless tie.

The Tigers came out strong and dominated most of the second half.  A little over two minutes into the half, Gettemy made a nice move down the left side but his pass to senior Adam Sharpnack was blocked and cleared.  Butler countered less than two minutes later, but Gamble misfired on an attempt from in front of the NA goal.  At the 4:37 mark, Nakajima was caught from behind by the Butler defense as NA had a two-on-one, but the Tigers did get a corner kick.  McIlvried followed with an attempt from close in on the left side that just missed the right corner of the net at the 7:55 mark.  After Hohn sent a high attempt over the NA goal from the right side at the 14:08 mark, the Tigers countered with a great scoring opportunity.  It was McIlvried again sending a high cross to Gettemy who headed it just over the goal.  Junior Danny Crawford drove a hard shot wide left from 30 yards at the 15:30 mark.  Two minutes later, McIlvried sent another cross in the box that junior Tim Zahren headed just right of the Butler net.  With 18:02 remaining, the Tornado had a direct kick just outside the box, but the NA defense was able to clear the ball without a shot.  With 16:30 remaining, McIlvried sent yet another cross into the box, but the Butler defense was there.  Thirty seconds later, O'Donnell was able to cover the ball after a scramble in the Butler penalty area.  Less than two minutes later, Sharpnack sent a header in off a direct kick that was stopped by the Butler GK.  Butler came back with chance with 14:32 remaining, but Brunner was able to catch the cross in front of the goal.  Both teams shot from long range over the next several minutes but were unable to score.  A final Butler attempt to win the game in regulation failed when Andy Schnur drove a ball just over the NA goal with 4:19 left.  Neither team mounted a major threat in the remaining time as regulation ended in a scoreless tie.

In the first overtime, both teams had chances.  Forty seconds into the period, McIlvried stole a Butler clearing pass, but his shot rolled right to O'Donnell.  Huey came back with a hard shot from 20 yards on the right side that Brunner stopped.  With 7:40 on the clock, Bretz worked the ball in close and earned an NA corner kick.  Junior defender Evan Cullen's attempt from 30 yards went wide.  Bretz came back but missed wide left from 15 yards with 3:55 left in the first OT.  After a yellow card was issued to the Butler coach, the Tornado came back to force a corner kick.  Hohn's attempt off the corner went wide.  There were not further scoring attempts as the game went to a second overtime period with a scoreless tie.  It took only 1:29 for Butler to score the winning goal as Huey broke free in the NA third and beat Brunner who had come out to challenge the Butler forward.  The ball rolled into the Tiger net to give the Tornado a hard-earned victory.

It was another great effort by the Tigers who did everything but score in the second half.  The NA defense did a good job the entire game led by senior Brian White, Cullen, and Schweers along with some good play in goal by Brunner.  For his play in the offensive zone, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Andrew McIlvried as the Player of the Game.

With the adjusted record, the Tigers are now 4-4-1 in section competition with the overall mark now at 6-9-2.  The game at Martorelli Stadium tomorrow night is scheduled for a 7:30 pm start.  The winner will go to the WPIAL playoffs!

TIGERS DROP 1-0 DECISION TO SOUTH PARK

by John Fulton

The Tigers lost a hard-fought 1-0 contest to the South Park Eagles, the No. 10 ranked team in AA, at Century United Fields on Saturday afternoon.

South Park struck early one minute into the contest to take a 1-0 lead.  North Allegheny’s first opportunity came on a corner kick by JP Fulton that was headed away by the Eagles.  Pat Fives and Nick Basara placed two strikes on goal; however, the South Park keeper kept the Tigers off the scoreboard.  Mateo Carlini came up with a big save in goal several minutes later to slow the Eagles momentum.  At 30:00 Brian White and Justin Kailer teamed to clear an attempt by South Park.  Kenny Nakajima sent a through ball into the box, but NA was unable to capitalize.  It appeared that the Tigers would close with a potential scoring opportunity; however, an apparent hand ball in the box was a no call.

The contest ended with a 1-0 Eagles victory.  The Tigers return to play on Tuesday evening for Senior Night in an important section game against Butler.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet with the pre-game show at 7:30 pm and the opening kickoff at 7:45 pm.  NATV will also tape the game for a later showing.

LATE GOALS LEAD TIGERS OVER SHALER, 3-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Junior forward Rafael Bretz scored with 14:28 remaining in the game to break a scoreless tie as the Tigers went on to a 3-0 victory over Shaler at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Sophomore Zach Jurgen came off the NA bench to score twice and put the game out of reach.  Senior GK Mike Brunner and the NA defense kept Shaler off the board as the Tigers jumped into a tie for third place in Section 2.

Defense was the name of the game in the first ten minutes as neither team could mount a scoring opportunity.  Shaler senior Ross Carhart had the first shot of the game 9:52 into the contest but his attempt from 18 yards went wide right with Tiger junior defender Evan Cullen contesting the shot.  Carhart had a better chance three minutes later, but Brunner came out to make a good save.  The Tigers came back just past the midway point when senior forward David Gettemy broke down the right side and crossed the ball to junior Andrew McIlvried who was stopped by Shaler GK Craig Feehan.  NA had another chance with 12:08 remaining when Bretz shot wide from 18 yards.   A minute later, Feehan stopped an NA cross with two Tigers ready in front of the net.  With 10:19 left, Carhart sent a long cross to the far post and Steve Hamilton just headed wide of the goal.  Carhart had another opportunity with 4:30 remaining but shot wide.  Junior J.P. Fulton made a nice move down the right side and set up Gettemy for a one timer that missed to the right of the goal.  The Tigers avoided disaster with 2:00 remaining when a ball sent back to Brunner went past the NA keeper but missed the goal.  The teams went to the intermission with a scoreless tie.

Early in the second half, Feehan made a diving stop in front of senior Kenny Nakajima just 1:39 into the period, but the Tigers were called for offsides on the play.  Junior Nick Basara drove a long shot that Feehan stopped less than a minute later.  Shaler earner a corner 4:30 into the half, but the NA defense blocked the attempt by sophomore Corey Casper.  At the 10:12 mark, senior Patrick Fives had a chance from the right side but sent it wide.  McIlvried raced down the left side and drove a hard shot from 15 yards that Feehan stopped at the 15:15 mark.  Shaler countered a minute later when senior Kevin Monahan drove a hard attempt from 35 yards that Brunner caught in the air.  A minute later, Brunner was forced to punch a long shot over the goal off a direct kick by Monahan.  Fulton had a chance from the right side from 18 yards but shot it wide just past the midway point of the half.  Shaler had two corner kicks in the next several minutes, but the Tiger defense was able to clear the ball without a shot at the NA goal.  The Tigers finally broke through with 14:28 remaining when Bretz took the ball on the left side, made a nice move around the defender, and cleanly beat Feehan with a shot into the right corner.  NA had the all-important first goal.  Junior MF Danny Crawford had another chance from 25 yards with 11:20 left, but Feehan made the save.  Two minutes later, senior MF Justin Facer drove a hard shot wide from 35 yards out.  The Tigers made it 2-0 when Jurgen converted a pass from McIlvried with 7:19 remaining.  Titan reserve Ervin Gosto tried to cut into the lead, but junior defender Pete Schweers made a good block of his shot from just inside the 18.  Shaler had one last attempt when Kevin Monahan was stopped by Brunner when he got off a good shot from ten yards after collecting a deflection.  Jurgen put the finishing touch on the NA victory with his second goal with just 26 seconds left.  Time ran out as the Tiger completed the 3-0 victory.

It was a good win for the Tigers as they avenged an earlier 1-0 loss at Shaler.  With the win, the NA section record improved to 3-4 and moved them into a three-way tie with Shaler and North Hills for third place and the final playoff spot.  The Tigers will host Pine-Richland tonight at Newman Stadium in a key 7:30 pm section matchup.

The Tigers avenged their prior loss to Seneca Valley with a 3 – 0 section win on Thursday evening to jump back into the playoff picture.

Once again North Allegheny played possession soccer throughout most of the game.  JP Fulton made a controlling run down the left side at 5:10, which resulted in a corner kick that was pushed wide of the net by Andrew McIlvried.  Several minutes later, Mcllvried received a through ball from Justin Facer and put the ball on net only to be saved by the Raiders goalie, Mike Stevens.  Approximately 17 minutes into the game, a Seneca Valley player received a hard red, and the team was forced to play a man down for the remainder of the contest.  At 23:00, Fulton set up another corner kick that Danny Crawford headed wide left of the goal. Although NA continued to pressure the SV defense, the 1st half ended with 0 – 0 score.

At 2:30 the Tigers finally got on the board when Facer forced the SV goalie to make a diving save left of the net; David Gettemy was able to collect the rebound and punch home the first goal of the evening.  At 15:30 Crawford attempted a strike from the 35-yard that was denied by the Raider keeper.  Two minutes later Lathom Louco made a strong run along the left and crossed the ball to McIlvried, who was taken down in the box for a penalty kick; however, the Seneca Valley goalie came up with a big save off Facer’s kick to keep the Raiders in the game.  At 28:00 Brian White scored the second goal of the evening off a direct kick after Facer was taken down at the 25-yard line.  With the score 2 – 0, the Tigers continued to mount pressure.  At 30:00 Fulton made a run into the box after receiving a through ball from Facer.  Fulton crossed the ball in front of the net to McIlvried, who shot just wide of the net.  At 32:00 Fulton and Facer set up on a short corner kick; Facer served the ball to Gettemy, who headed the ball to the back of the net to take a 3 – 0 lead.  In the final minute Mike Brunner made a big save off a direct kick to preserve the shutout.

For his play David Gettemy was selected as the NA Player of the Game.

On Saturday night, the team travels to No. 1 ranked Bethel Park for a non-section contest.

BEAVER BEATS TIGERS, 2-1, IN OVERTIME

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Sophomore Ryan Conley drove home a rebound with 2:39 remaining in the first overtime period to give Beaver a 2-1 victory over the Tigers at Newman Stadium on Monday night.  Junior Rafael Bretz had given the Tigers an early 1-0 lead with a goal just 30 seconds into the contest.

The Tigers came out strong and scored on their first shot of the game as senior forward David Gettemy sent a short pass to Bretz who finished from about 12 yards out.  NA took the early 1-0 lead and kept the pressure on the Bobcat defense.  The Tigers had a goal by Gettemy waved off when NA was called for offsides at the 3:03 mark.  Junior Danny Crawford let a hard shot go from 20 yards that Beaver GK Kevin Conley had to stop less than a minute later.  Conley had to come out to catch an NA cross, and Crawford drilled another long attempt that Conley stopped all before five minutes were played.  The Bobcats came back in the sixth minute when Buckenheimer sent a pass through the box that Austin Maddox just sent wide of the net.  The game settled down at this point with both teams turning up the defensive pressure.  Junior Adam Sharpnack was forced to clear a ball off the line at with 22:40 remaining when NA sophomore goalkeeper Mike Severyn came out of the net to make an initial save.  A little over a minute later, senior Patrick Fives served Gettemy who headed it toward the goal.  Conley made a diving save to keep the game at 1-0.  With 19:02 left, Facer's shot was blocked with Crawford sending a hard shot on the rebound that Conley stopped.  After a pair of yellow cards were given to Beaver, the Tigers resumed the attack in the last five minutes.  NA had a chance on a corner kick but Conley leaped high to catch the cross.  With 3:22 left, Beaver took advantage of a direct kick from 30 yards out on the road.  Buckenheimer sent a bouncing ball through the box that Adam Brewer directed into the net to tie the game.  Crawford had one last chance in the half, but his long shot was stopped by Conley on the second hop.  The teams went to the intermission tied at 1-1.

In the second half, the Tigers picked up where they left off by pressuring the Beaver goal in the early going.  Facer had a chance from 30 yards but his shot went wide right at the 4:53 mark.  Less than a minute later, junior MF J.P. Fulton drove a hard shot from the right side that Conley had to stop.  NA continued to pressure the Beaver goal over the next several minutes but could not get off a good scoring attempt.  Junior Andrew McIlvried drove a hard shot over the goal at the 11:10 mark with Fives following with another shot over the goal on a rebound a minute later.  The Tigers continued to earn corner kicks with the pressure.  With 22:26 left, on a corner kick junior Tim Zahren dropped a pass back to Facer just outside the 18.  Conley made another diving save to keep the game tied.  After the Tigers failed to convert on two more corners, the Bobcats had a chance with 19:08 remaining in the second half when Buckenheimer made a nice move in the box that resulted in a corner for the Bobcats, their only corner of the half.  Neither team could muster much of an attack during the next ten minutes.  The Bobcats had a great opportunity to take the lead with 8:25 left, but Ryan Conley hit the crossbar and NA keeper Severyn was able to control the rebound.  Less than a minute later, senior Kenny Nakajima drove a hard shot just wide of the goal from 15 yards out.  Fives missed wide right and Sharpnack sent a roller that Conley saved as NA continued to pressure the Bobcat goal.  Beaver had a chance when defender Noah Erin came up to take a hard shot from 30 yards that Severyn stopped with 3:53 left.  After Ryan Conley sent a shot wide of the NA net, the Tigers came back with one last chance to win in regulation time but Fives shot was stopped by Conley with 1:54 remaining.  Regulation time ended with the teams still tied at 1-1.  NA dominated play in the second half earning 10 corner kicks to just one for Beaver.

Early in the overtime, Brewer had a chance but his shot went over the NA goal.  Neither team threatened until Beaver finally won it late in the period.  Buckenheimer made a nice move along the goal line to keep the ball in play in the box.  After an initial shot hit the cross bar and dropped straight down, Ryan Conley was able to send the rebound into the goal to give the Bobcats the victory.

It was yet another tough loss for the Tigers who dominated play for most of the evening.  The total corner kicks finished at 13 for NA to just five for Beaver.  For his overall efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Justin Facer as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, the overall NA record fell to 3-7-1.  The Tigers will began second half section play on Thursday night when they travel to Seneca Valley to meet the Raiders in a 7:30 pm contest.

NORTH HILLS UPENDS TIGERS, 3-2, IN OVERTIME

by John Fulton

The Tigers lost a hard-fought 3-2 OT contest to North Hills last night at Newman Stadium.

As has been the case all season, North Allegheny controlled the game by playing possession soccer.  David Gettemy opened the scoring for the Tigers at 9:00 on a serve from Pete Schweers from the back line.  At 13:00 Pat Fives drove a left-footed volley just wide of the net to maintain pressure on the North Hills goalie.  The 1st half ended with NA on top 1 – 0.

Seven minutes into the 2nd half, Mike Brunner came up big with a save to keep the Indians off the scoreboard.  North Hills continued to pressure; however, Schweers denied the visitors with a clearance at 12:00.  The Indians would eventually break through the NA defense with two goals in a 10-minute span at 13:00 to take a 2 – 1 lead.  With 17 minutes remaining in regulation, JP Fulton made a big run down the left side and crossed the ball to Andrew McIlvried, who headed home the equalizer to tie the game at 2 – 2.  Fulton continued to pressure the Indian’s defense with runs along the right wing; however, neither team was able to take the lead.

In OT both teams played attacking soccer; however, with 6 seconds remaining, the Indians offense produced a cross and a game-winning header, which resulted in a 3 – 2 win for the visitors.

For his play along the wing and his assist to tie the game, JP Fulton was selected as the NA Player of the Game.

On Friday night, the team travels to Peters Township for a non-section contest.

JV UPDATE:  Zach Jergen scored the lone goal for the Tigers, who picked up a 1 – 0 win.

2007 WPIAL BOYS' SOCCER

The Tigers will again compete in the WPIAL Class AAA this season along with 33 other teams.  The top three teams and ties will enter the WPIAL tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section win/lost record.  Ties will be broken by the following method: three points for a win, one point for a tie.  Please note the change in the tiebreaker (minus points for losses will not be applied.)  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and both will be declared co-champions and each will receive a section winner's plaque.  Those two teams will enter the tournament and the second place team will enter as the third section representative.  In the event of a tie for second or third place, the tie breaker system will be employed.  If a tie persists, head to head competition will determine the qualifier.  In the event of a multiple tie the following tie breaker will be employed:

1.  Section records of the tied teams will be compiled
2.  The team that has the best won/loss record in head to head competition among the tied teams only will be the qualifier.
3.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter the tournament.

Teams that qualify for the tournament should be aware that they may be placed in a preliminary round and may e assigned to play the weekend prior to the first round of the tournament.

Each game will consist of two equal halves of 40 minutes each.  Regular season game overtimes shall be resolved by playing no more than two "sudden victory" overtime periods not to exceed ten minutes each.  If a tie persists at that point, the game is over and is recorded as a tie.  In post-season play, the procedure to determine a game winner will be the state adopted method of the National Federation soccer rules book.

PIAA qualifiers - the WPIAL champion, runner-up, and the winner of the third place consolation game will advance.

Players and coaches who receive hard red cards and are disqualified from any game by the game official will not be permitted to participate in the next scheduled game played by their team at the same level of competition.  Repeated red card offenders will be subjected to more severe penalties.
