HAGY'S GOAL IN OVERTIME BEATS STATE COLLEGE, 1-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Junior defenseman Tyler Hagy scored from just inside the blue line 1:10 into overtime to give the Tigers a hard-fought 1-0 victory over State College at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Friday night.  Sophomore goalie Lindsay Holdcroft posted her first varsity shutout as the Tigers won their fourth straight PIHL contest.

The Tigers were called for too many men on the ice just 46 seconds into the game giving State College an early power play.  Holdcroft made three tough saves on John Beuary and Brian James to keep the game scoreless.  The Little Lions did get a puck into the net at the 2:58 mark, but it was disallowed because of a hand pass.  Later in the period, junior Brian Nimmo had a chance but his shot went wide of the SC goal.  After State College pressured the NA goal at the 6:30 mark, senior defenseman Tyson Stupy drilled a hard shot from the point but SC goalie Calvin Michael made the stop.  Ryan Pate had an opportunity for State College from the left side with 5:15 remaining, but Holdcroft again made the save.  With 3:40 remaining, senior defenseman Corey Sheran sent a  shot from the right point that was deflected just wide of the SC goal.  The Little Lions had a great chance on a 2-on-1 with 2:00 remaining, but Holdcroft stopped Ryan Pate's attempt.  Senior Joe Snatchko had a chance with less than a minute remaining.  State College was called for a penalty with 36 seconds left, and junior Brady Waldschmidt came close to scoring with just three seconds on the clock, but Michael made the save as time ran out.  The first period ended scoreless.

Early in the second period, the Tigers had several good opportunities on the power play, but Michael made good saves on Snatchko and Stupy.  The game slowed as both teams played conservatively looking for mistakes and scoring chances.  With three minutes gone in the period, Ryan Pate intercepted an NA clearing pass, but his shot was stopped by Holdcroft.  At the 9:01 mark, Snatchko had a chance but Michael again were there for the stop.  Late in the period, Hagy drove a hard slap shot from the right point, but Michael made the save with 1:12 remaining.  Both teams had opportunities in the last minute.  Junior Dylan Rohar sent a rebound just wide of the SC goal with 30 seconds left.  With fifteen seconds on the second period clock, John Beuary stole the puck and shot wide left.  The second period ended with the game still scoreless.

The teams continued to play defensively early in the third period.  Sophomore Jordan Beck had a chance at the 11:10 mark but his backhand shot went wide.  Less than a minute later, Waldschmidt was stopped by Michael from in front of the goal.  With 8:14 left, Rob Holdcroft was stopped by cousin Lindsay who made a great diving save to keep the game scoreless.  State College came close with 5:49 left but hit the left post.  With 5:33 left in the period, State College's Dan Stidson was called for hooking as he pulled down Andrew Black in front of the SC net .  With 4:47 remaining, Waldschmidt skated out from behind the goal and got off a good shot from right in front of the net but was stopped again by Michael.   As time ran down on the power play, Michael made another save on Waldschmidt as he attempted to poke in a rebound of a shot by senior defenseman Jake Williams.  With 2:25 remaining, SC's Brian James got free on a breakaway, but Holdcroft again came up with a huge save to keep the game scoreless.  With 45 seconds left, Stupy drove another hard shot from the point but could not beat Michael.  The Tigers had one last chance with time running out.  After Michael stopped Rohar, Black sent the rebound just wide of the net.  Regulation time ended in a scoreless tie.

The Tigers wasted little time in picking up the important victory.  After a faceoff in the SC end, Hagy beat Michael cleanly on the long shot off an assist from junior forward Donny Lewis to end the contest.  It was a great effort by the Tigers who were without several starters and were playing their second game in a six-hour period.  For her efforts throughout the game, the North Allegheny Sports Network named goalie Lindsay Holdcroft as the Player of the Game.

THIRD PERIOD GOALS GIVE TIGERS
3-1 VICTORY OVER SENECA VALLEY

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Junior Brett Schindler scored midway through the third period and junior Bo Schwab added an empty net goal as the Tigers defeated Seneca Valley, 3-1, at Bladerunners in Warrendale on Tuesday night.  Junior Donny Lewis had tied the game with a power play goal in the second period.

Seneca Valley pushed the action from the opening whistle with NA senior goalie Max Richards forced to make a good save on Erik Larson just 1:18 into the contest.  The Tigers were called for a too many men on the ice penalty at the 3:27 mark, but the NA defense and Richards kept the game scoreless.  The Tigers had a chance later in the period, but a slap shot from the right point by junior defenseman Tyler Hagy was stopped by SV goalie Ryan Schutte.  With 6:46 remaining, senior forward Josh Herbert broke free into the Raider zone, but the puck slid off his stick before he could get off a good shot.  Richards made another good save on Larson with 4:02 remaining in the period.  The Raiders broke through with 1:32 left when Matt Jarrett skated down the middle and beat Richards over the left shoulder to give SV a 1-0 advantage.  The Tigers came back seconds later when Schindler skated in front of the SV goal and drew a tripping penalty.  Hagy had another chance right before the period ended, but Schutte made the save.  The period ended with Seneca Valley holding a 1-0 lead.

Early in the second period, SV's Joe Sasala was called for interference giving NA a 5-on-3 advantage.  The Tigers got a pair of scoring chances from junior Dylan Rohar and Herbert but could not beat Schutte.  Later in the period with junior Patrick Moynihan in the box, Schindler led a two-on-one shorthanded breakout and drew another penalty on Sasala at the 3:37 mark.  This time the Tigers converted as Lewis skated in from the left corner and beat Schutte with a high shot into the left corner.  The Tigers had tied the score at 1-1 at the 4:42 mark.  The Raiders came back with their own 2-on-1 shorthanded attempt but Richards stopped a shot by Michael Rohm from the right side.  The physical play picked up with coincidental minors called against Hagy and Richard Schuette.  Later in the period, freshman Andrew Black was sent off for holding, but the Tigers killed the penalty.  With 4:21 left, Richards made another good save on Andrew Tang to keep the game tied at 1-1.  Less than a minute later, Brandon Platt had a chance from the right side but Richards again made the stop.  The Tigers had a late chance to take the lead when Moynihan set up Schindler right in front of the SV goal, but Schuette came up with a sparkling save to keep the game tied.  The teams went to the second intermission still tied at 1-1.

The pace slowed early in the third period with each team playing defensively and looking for a chance to take the lead.  At the 4:51 mark, the Raiders had the first scoring chance but Richards stopped a hard slap shot by Sasala.  The physical play continued between the neighborhood rivals as Sam Jarrett and Lewis were sent off for roughing at the 5:15 mark.  Less than a minute later, Schindler skated across the middle and beat Schuette with a hard shot to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead with 8:49 remaining in the game.  The Tigers threatened to extend the lead in the next minute with good attempts by Schwab, Rohar and senior defenseman Tyson Stupy, but Schuette was able to make the saves.  With 7:28 left, Sasala drove another hard slap shot that Richards stopped to keep NA on top.  With Moynihan in the box, Rohar got loose on a breakaway and drew a slashing call on Matt Jarrett.  With Black serving an interference penalty at the 4:58 mark, Rohar skated in again shorthanded and only good play by Tang who dove to knock the puck away saved the Raiders from another NA scoring chance.  With less than a minute to go, SV Coach Mike Schall pulled his goalie with a faceoff in the Tiger zone.  The Raiders were able to put the puck in the net with 23 seconds left, but Rohm was called for a cross-checking penalty in front of the net that negated the goal.  Schwab then came back to put the game away with an empty net score from just inside the Raider blue line.  The Tigers were able to take home a hard-fought 3-1 victory.

It was a physical contest that saw a number of penalties called throughout the evening.  Seneca Valley held a territorial advantage for much of the evening, but the NA defense, led by Stupy and  Hagy, along with good play in the net by Richards, held off the Raider attack.  For his effort at both ends of the ice, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Donny Lewis as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers improved their PIHL record to 4-2 on the season.  NA will return to league action next Friday, December 7, when they host the State College Little Lions.  Game time at Bladerunners in Warrendale is set for 8:00 pm.

After falling behind, 2-0, the Tigers came back to score the next eight goals on their way to an 8-3 victory over Butler at the Ice Connection on Thursday night.  Junior forward Dylan Rohar scored three times and junior forward Donny Lewis twice for the winning Tigers.  Freshman Andrew Black, senior Brady Waldschmidt and senior Josh Herbert also added goals for NA.

Butler jumped off to a quick 1-0 lead when R.C. Double scored just 2:06 into the contest.  The Tornado made it 2-0 when Dave Wolfe set up Zach Pennington with 5:32 remaining in the period.  The Tigers came back, however, with Rohar tallying his first of the night on an assist from sophomore defenseman Matt Ogle to cut the margin to 2-1 with 4:02 left.  The teams went to the first intermission with Butler holding a 2-1 advantage.

The second period belonged to the Tigers.  Rohar tied the game 27 seconds into the stanza on an assist from Black.  Black gave the Tigers their first lead of the game midway through the period with Rohar and Ogle adding assists.  Rohar completed the hat trick with 5:14 remaining with Herbert and junior defenseman Tyler Hagy picking up the helpers as the Tigers took a 4-2 lead.  The period ended with NA holding a two-goal advantage.

In the third period, the Tigers extended the margin to 6-2 on two quick goals.  Waldschmidt made it a 5-2 game on assists from Lewis and Herbert at the 3:42 mark.  Less than a minute later, Lewis scored with assists going to seniors Tyson Stupy and Bo Schwab as the Tigers took a four-goal lead.  Herbert and Lewis added goals with Double scoring for Butler late in the period as the Tigers went on to the 8-3 victory.  Sophomore goalie Greg Borza was in the net for the Tigers and earned the victory.

The Tigers outshot Bulter, 40-19, as they improved their section record to 3-2 on the season.  NA will host Seneca Valley on Tuesday, November 27, in their next PIHL contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 8:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 8:30 pm.
