KUREMSKY WINS GOLD AT STATES; TIGER BOYS FINISH FOURTH

Meet Results

Freshman Connor Kuremsky won the diving competition at the PIAA Class AAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Bucknell University on Thursday.  The Tiger boys finished in fourth place just two points behind third-place Emmaus.  The Lady Tigers finished in a tie for 18th place.

Kuremsky totaled 495.85 points in winning the gold medal with second place Ryan Kuser of Wilson coming in thirty-one points behind.  Kuremsky held a nine-point advantage in the semifinal competition. 

The top individual performances of the day for NA in swimming events came from sophomore Jonathan Buerger who finished fourth in the gruellling 500 freestyle and the 400 free relay team who also came in fourth.  Sophomore Mark Waugh, senior Jack Crellin, junior Luis Rodriguez, and Buerger swam a time of 3:10.96 to earn fourth place points.  Junior Kevin Kuntz took 15th in the 500 free.   In the girls' competition, senior Jamie Chakany posted a sixteenth place finish in the girls' 500 free.

TIGER BOYS THIRD AFTER FIRST
DAY OF PIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Day One Results

The Tiger boys are within striking distance of the lead in the PIAA Class AAA Championships after finishing in third place on the first day of competition at Bucknell University on Wednesday.  The girls' team is in fifteenth place after one day.

For the boys, the top finishes were bronze medals earned by sophomore Jonathan Buerger in the 200 free and sophomore Mark Waugh in the 100 butterfly.  Junior Luis Rodriguez earned a fifth place medal in the fly final.  Both NA relay teams earned points in the team standings.  The 200 medley relay squad of senior Jack Crellin, Rodriguez, senior Matt Becker, and Waugh came in fifth while the 200 free relay team of Buerger, Becker, Rodriguez and Waugh captured eighth place in the finals.

The 200 medley relay team of freshman Corinne Talhouk, sophomore Kylie Grady, sophomore Courtney Thompson, and senior Jamie Chakany had the top finish for the Lady Tigers when they were able to win the seventh place medal.  In the diving competition, junior Emilie Foley finished in the ninth place in the finals.

Competition will conclude today with finals in five events --- 100 free, 500 free, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay.  In addition, the boys' diving final will be held this afternoon.  The starting time for today's action is scheduled for 8:30 am at the Kinney Natatorium on the campus of Bucknell University.

TIGERS TAKE THIRD STRAIGHT WPIAL TITLE;
GIRLS CAPTURE SECOND PLACE

Meet Results

The Tiger boys won their third consecutive WPIAL Class AAA Championship on Thursday at Trees Pool on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.  The Lady Tigers surprised the field with an unexpected second place to powerful Bethel Park who won their fourth straight title.

The boys were led on the second day of competition by second place finishes by sophomore Jonathan Buerger in the 500 free and senior Matt Becker in the 100 breaststroke.  Junior Kevin Kuntz took the bronze in the 500 free, captain Jack Crellin was third in the 100 backstroke, and sophomore Jonathan Du captured third and senior Max Rzodkiewicz fourth in the 100 breaststroke.  Sophomore Mark Waugh had a fifth place finish in the 200 freestyle while junior Joey Weiland tied for sixth in the 100 backstroke. The NA 400 freestyle relay team finished in the second place.

For the Lady Tigers, senior Jamie Chakany finished with the silver medal in the grueling 500 freestyle while freshman Corinne Talhouk was second in the 100 backstroke to pace NA.  In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Kylie Grady was third and sophomore Kasey Manko took fifth.  The Lady Tiger 200 freestyle relay team finished in fifth place.

It was a great performance by the Tiger teams.  The boys won with just one first place, freshman Connor Kuremsky in the diving competition.  The superior depth of the Tiger swimmers paid off as they scored 348 points to easily outdistance second place Mt. Lebanon with 235.5.  NA had fourteen top-six finishers in the nine individual races while all three Tiger relay teams finished in the top three.  The Lady Tigers got impressive performances from a number of swimmers to post 264 points to finish second behind Bethel Park's 462.

The top three finishers in each event qualified for the state meet that will be held on March 12-13 at Bucknell University.  Good luck to the Tigers at states!

BOYS TAKE LEAD, GIRLS SECOND AFTER
FIRST DAY OF WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Meet Results

The defending WPIAL Champion boys' team built a big lead after Day 1 of the WPIAL Class AAA Swimming Championships at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh on Tuesday.  NA totaled 209.5 points to second place Mt. Lebanon's 148 and third place Franklin Regional's 146.  In girls' competition, the Lady Tigers are second with 150 points to first place Bethel Park's 261.

The top individual finisher for the boys was sophomore Mark Waugh who swam a 51.29 in the 100 butterfly to finish second.  Junior Luis Rodriguez had a good day with a third place finish in the 100 fly and fifth place finish in the 200 free.  Sophomore Jonathan Buerger captured fourth in the 200 free while senior captain Jack Crellin placed fourth in the 200 IM.  The Tigers got sixth place points from Kevin Kuntz in the 200 free and Matt Becker in the 200 IM.  Both NA relay teams finished in third place.  The 200 medley team was third behind Central Catholic and Mt. Lebanon while the 200 free team was third behind Franklin Regional and Mt. Lebanon.

For the Lady Tigers, senior Jamie Chakany posted the highest individual placing with a third in the 200 IM.  The NA medley relay team captured second place behind Bethel Park.

Action will resume tomorrow with Day 2 of the competition.  After a day off because of weather, finals will be held in 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay.

KUREMSKY WINS TITLE WITH RECORD SCORE

Freshman Connor Kuremsky not only won the Class AAA diving championships at the Senior High pool on Saturday afternoon, but he set a new WPIAL record with 528.45.  Kuremsky easily outpointed second place winner Ryan Koter of Franklin Regional who scored 490.95.  Devin Glace of NA finished in twelfth place with 313.20.

In girls' competition, junior Emilie Foley finished in fourth place with a total of 424.55.  Sophomore Samantha Pickens of Franklin Regional won the title with a record score of 542.25.  Jen Graham of NA finished in sixth place and earned an alternate's spot for the PIAA championship.  Olivia DeFazio was ninth with a score of 372.80.

Both Kuremsky and Foley qualified for the PIAA Championships to be held at Bucknell University on March 11-14.

TIGER TEAMS TAKE DOWN NORTH HILLS IN SECTION FINALE

Both Tiger swimming and diving teams were victorious at North Hills on Thursday night.  The boys' squad finished section competition unbeaten with a 101-77 victory over the Indians while the Lady Tigers took a 99-79 win.

With the win, the boys' team finished with a 6-0 section record, 9-1 overall, and the section title.  The Lady Tigers completed a 5-0-1 section season good for the co-championship of the section with Seneca Valley.  The NA girls finished with an 8-1-1 overall mark.  On Saturday, the Last Ditch Invitational will be held at the Senior High pool beginning at 5:00 pm.

BOYS SINK SENECA VALLEY; GIRLS TIE SENECA IN UPSET

Meet Results

The Lady Tigers managed a 93-93 tie against heavily favored Seneca Valley at the Senior High pool on Thursday night.  Junior diver Emilie Foley gave NA a great start with a victory against the top-ranked diver in the WPIAL.  Although the NA swimmers won only three additional events, the superior depth of the NA squad proved to be up to the task of upsetting the Raiders.

Freshman Corinne Talhouk won the 100 backstroke, took second in the 200 free and swam on the winning 200 medley relay to lead the Lady Tigers.  Sophomore Kasey Manko in the 100 breaststroke and Foley were the only other first place winners.  Senior Jamie Chakany posted seconds in both the 50 and 500 free while junior Sarah Musial was second in the 200 IM and sophomore Steph Graham second in the 100 breaststroke.  In the 200 medley relay, Musial, Manko, and senior Jessica Shearer joined Talhouk in the winning swim.

The boys' team easily defeated Seneca Valley by a score of 94-65.  The Tiger divers and swimmers won all 12 events as they stayed unbeaten in Section 2 competition.  Leading the Tigers was senior captain Jack Crellin with firsts in the 200 IM and 500 free along with anchoring the winning 200 medley relay team.  Sophomore Elliott Baxter took the 200 free, senior Matt Becker the 50 free, senior Nate Kurtanich the 100 fly, and sophomore Jonathan Buerger the 100 free as the Tigers dominated the meet.  Freshman Connor Kuremsky once again won the diving competition.

With the tie, the Lady Tigers are now tied with Seneca with section records of 4-0-1.  NA is 7-1-1 overall.  The boys are 5-0 in section, 8-1 overall.  The Tiger teams will close out section competition next Thursday when they travel to North Hills to meet the Indians.  Meet time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.

TIGER TEAMS TAKE TWO FROM PINE-RICHLAND

Both the boys and girls' swimming and diving teams were victorious at Pine-Richland on Thursday night in section meets.  The boys trounced the Rams, 133-48, while the Lady Tigers won by a 105-66 score.

With the wins, both teams improved their section records to 4-0, the overall marks to 7-1 on the season.  The Tiger teams will host McDowell tomorrow at the Senior High pool with meet time scheduled for 11:00 am.

BUTLER FALLS TO TIGER TEAMS

Meet Results

Both Tiger teams posted impressive victories over Butler at the Senior High pool on Thursday night.  The boys' team dominated section opponent Butler by a score of 108-59.  As is becoming a standard, freshman diver Conor Kuremsky got things started by winning the diving event with a newvarsity and pool record of 331.60 points.  Sophomore Jonathan Buerger was victorious in the 200 IM, freshman Kostya Borisov had a personal best time in the 100 free while taking the gold, freshman Michael Tsang won the 100 butterfly, sophomore Sean Battle qualified for the WPIAL championships while taking the 500 freestyle and sophomore Mark Waugh finished first in the 100 backstroke. 

In the girls 100-78 victory, freshman Corinne Talhouk took the200 IM event and numerous girls registered lifetime best swims as the Tigers remained undefeated in section 2 competition.

With the wins, both teams improved their section reocords to 3-0, the overall marks to 6-1 on the season.  The Tiger teams will travel to Pine-Richland next Thursday for a 6:00 pm section meet.

KUREMSKY WINS FIRST NA DIVING INVITATIONAL

Freshman Connor Kuremsky won the first NA Diving Invitational at the Senior High pool on Saturday, January 19.  Kuremsky scored 510.85 points to finish well ahead of second-place finisher Ryan Koter of Franklin Regional.  Jared Scheck of Shady Side Academy was third.  NA's Devin Glace finished in tenth place.

In the girls' competition, Samantha Pickens scored 486.50 points to take first place ahead of Amanda Lohman of Upper St. Clair.  Tori Brungo of Kiski was third.  Junior Emilie Foley of NA finished in 6th place despite performing the wrong dive due to an error on her 11-dive list.  Foley completed ten dives while everyone else finished with eleven.  NA's Jen Graham was 9th and Olivia DeFazio tenth in the competition.

TIGER TEAMS WIN COMBINED TEAM TITLE
IN LITITZ INVITATIONAL

Meet Results

The Tiger swim teams won the combined team title at the Lititz Invitational on Friday and Saturday.  The boys' team almost doubled the point total of second-place Hempfield (District 3) with sophomore Jon Buerger voted the Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet.  The girls finished in second place led by sophomore Kylie Grady.

Buerger won the 200 and 500 freestyle events and anchored the 400 free relay that set a pool and meet record.  Sophomore Mark Waugh added a victory in the 100 butterfly and led off with a lifetime best 100 in the record setting fee free relay.  Sophomore Elliott Baxter, sophomore Jon Du, sophomore Jake Scherer, freshman Kostya Borisov, sophomore Matt Reid, and freshman Michael Magdic all contributed to the team victory with season and lifetime best swims.

In the girls' second place finish, Grady led with a victory in the 100 breaststroke.  Freshman Corinne Talhouk was third in the 100 backstroke, sophomore Stephanie Graham was third in the 200 IM, sophomore Courtney Thompson was third in the 100 butterfly, and freshman Kasey Manko, freshman Leah Garcia, freshman Caroline Schweers, Sam Cready, freshman Rachel Lewis, freshman Adelee Choban, Elyse Kuntz, and freshman Marina Rozick all contributed with lifetime and season best swims.

NA will host the NA Diving Invitational at the Senior High pool on Saturday at 9:00 am while the swimming team will travel to Erie McDowell for an 11:00 am meet.

TIGER TEAMS SWEEP FOX CHAPEL

Meet Results

Both Tiger teams were victorious in section meets at Fox Chapel on Tuesday night.  The Lady Tigers defeated the Foxes, 104-80, while the boys' team earned a 103.5-64.5 victory.

For the Lady Tigers, senior Jamie Chakany won the 50 free to lead the way.  Sophomore Courtney Thompson took the 100 fly, sophomore Kylie Grady captured the 100 breaststroke and freshman Corinne Talhouk was first in the 100 back.  The medley relay team of Talhouk, Grady, junior Sarah Musial and senior Jess Shearer won their race.  In diving, NA swept the top three places with junior Emilie Foley placing first, junior Jen Graham second and senior Olivia DeFazio third.

Senior Nate Kurtanich paced the boys' team with wins in both the 50 and 100 freestyle races.  Sophomore Mark Waugh was also a double winner taking both the 200 IM and 100 backstroke.  Junior Luis Rodriguez won the 200 free while sophomore Jonathan Buerger captured the 500 free.  The medley relay team of Buerger, senior Matt Becker, Kurtanich and Waugh was a winner as was the 200 free relay team of seniors Jordan Lebovitz and Jack Crellin, junior Kevin Kuntz and Becker.  In diving, Devin Glace was first and Michael Smolinski second.

With the wins, both NA teams improved their section records to 2-0, their overall marks to 5-1.  The Tiger teams will be back in action over the weekend when they travel to the Lititz Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

TIGERS SINK SHALER TWICE

Meet Results

Both Tiger teams dominated Shaler as section action got under way at the Senior High pool on Thursday night.  The Lady Tigers downed the Titans, 94-50, while the boys were victorious by a 92-62 score.

For the Lady Tigers, sophomore Courtney Thompson won both the 200 IM and 500 free, senior Jamie Chakany took the 100 fly, and sophomore Stephanie Graham was first in the 50 free.  Two freshmen were winners with Leah Garcia capturing the 200 free and Corinne Talhouk the 100 free.  The medley relay team of senior Jessica Shearer, sophomore Kylie Grady, Thompson, and freshman Marina Rozick won their race.

The boys' team was led by seniors Jack Crellin with a first in the 100 fly and Nate Kurtanich with a win in the 50 free.  Junior Kevin Kuntz won the 100 fly, junior Luis Rodriguez the 500 free, and sophomore Jonathan Du the 200 IM.  The medley relay team of freshman Konstantine Borisov, sophomore Mark Waugh, senior Matt Becker and Rodriguez was victorious.

In diving, both NA teams swept their events.  For the girls, junior Jen Graham was first, senior Olivia DeFazio second, and junior Emilie Foley third.  In the boys' event, freshman Connor Kuremsky took first, junior Devin Glace second and Mike Smolinski third.

The Tiger teams will travel to Fox Chapel on Tuesday night to meet the Foxes in a section meet.  The scheduled starting time is set for 6:00 pm.

WPIAL SWIMMING - 2007-08

The Tiger teams will compete again in the WPIAL in Class AAA along with 29 other teams.  The WPIAL boys/girls section swimming competitions are scheduled to begin on January 3, 2008 and must be completed according to the schedule.  The WPIAL swimming program will be operated during the 2007/2008 school year on a double dual meet bais for all section meets.  The boys and girls swimming teams will swim at the same time at the same pool.

Section champions will be determined by the best won/lost record in section play.  In the case of a tie in section record for first place, all tied teams will receive a plaque.  National Federation scoring will be in effect.  The scoring system must correspond to the total number of available lanes in the competition pool, except where modified by prior mutual consent.

The WPIAL swimming championships will be held at the University of Pittsburgh.  Anticipated dates are Wednesday, February 27 and Thursday, February 28, 2008.  The dates of the PIAA Championships are March 12-15, 2008.  The WPIAL AAA Diving Championships will be held at North Allegheny H.S. on Saturday, February 23, 2008.

WPIAL QUALIFYING STANDARDS

A.  Teams must have a minimum of 11 competitions (swimming and/or diving) prior to the WPIAL Meet, to be eligible to score points at the WPIAL or PIAA Championships.

B.  Individuals must have been in uniform and available at 75% of the teams contests to be eligible for post-season competition.

C.  Swimming - in order to qualify for the WPIAL championship event at Pitt, all swimmers must achieve the minimum standards established by the WPIAL.  These standards must be met in a WPIAL meet or in an invitational qualifying meet that is scored and uses an electronic timing device.  Standards are available on the WPIAL website (www.wpial.org).

D.  Diving - in order to quallify for the WPIAL diving competition, all divers must meet the minimum standards that appear on the WPIAL website
