TIGERS KNOCKED OUT OF STATE PLAYOFFS

The North Allegheny Field Hockey team was eliminated from the PIAA playoffs Tuesday night with a 4-0 defeat to the Cocalico Eagles.  The loss doesn't sour the taste of a great season for the Tigers.  It was a tremendous year in which they claimed the WPIAL Championship with a thrilling overtime victory over Fox Chapel.  North Allegheny finishes the year with a 16-6 record.  Cocalico advances to play Hershey in the Quarterfinals.  Hershey defeated Central Bucks South 3-2.

NA DOWNS STATE COLLEGE
IN PIAA PRELIMINARY ROUND

Coming off a dramatic win in the WPIAL title game, the North Allegheny field hockey team continued their roll with a 2-1 win over State College on Wednesday afternoon.  The game didn't quite start out in NA's favor.  The early momentum was clearly owned by State College, who out shot the Tigers 21-1 in the first half.  The Little Lions' Allie Lauth scored the game's first goal with 5:23 left in the first half to give State College a 1-0.

In the second half, the Tigers turned the tide on State College, rallying for the win.  North Allegheny sophomore Emily Humiston tied the game at 1-1 with 15:50 on the clock.  Late in the second half, senior Hailey Mancuso delivered a pass to Sophie Batton who fired a shot in the State College net to give NA the game winning goal.  The Tigers 2-1 win in the PIAA preliminary round, advances North Allegheny to the first round of the State Tournament.  North Allegheny will play again on Tuesday.

NA CLAIMS WPIAL TITLE WITH OT WIN

by Lee Mohn

The North Allegheny field hockey team won in dramatic fashion on Monday night defeating previously undefeated Fox Chapel on their home turf, 2-1 in overtime, to win the WPIAL AAA Field Hockey Championship.  It was all Fox Chapel early for the first 10 minutes.  North Allegheny Head Coach Jen Diaz would call timeout and the team responded with the first goal of the game.  Emily Humiston took a perfect pass from Carly Thieret and came down the left side, got by a another defender and then lifted a shot over the shoulder of goalie Lauren Smith with 12:39 left in the first half to give the Tigers the all important first goal.  Fox Chapel would respond and dominate the last 5 minutes of the half but could not score.

Fox Chapel would then dominate the 2nd half and with 3 minutes to go in the game Kate Hardiman converted Fox Chapel's 13th penalty corner of the night to tie the score at 1-1 and send the game into overtime.  North Allegheny almost won it 39 seconds into overtime but Sophie Batton just missed wide.  Then the Foxes would look like they would have a two on zero break but a great defensive play by Alexa Sofranko prevented the break.  With 6:23 left the Tigers converted on a three on two break when Thieret fired a perfect shot into the right side of the net for the Tiger victory and the celebration began.  Carly Thieret was named the Wright Automotive player of the game for her efforts Monday night.  North Allegheny will now travel to State College on Wednesday for a preliminary game for the PIAA playoffs.

NORTH ALLEGHENY ADVANCES TO FINALS WITH WIN OVER PETERS

by Lee Mohn

The North Allegheny field hockey team is headed back to finals.  North Allegheny defeated Peters Township on Wednesday night, 5-1.  The Tigers jumped out first at the 21:05 mark of the first half with a goal from Sophie Batton assisted by Carly Thieret.  That would be the only goal and the only shot on goal in the first half.  The game was basically played between the 30's on the field with neither team creating opportunities.

NA would score 1:33 into the 2nd half when Hailey Mancusco picked up a rebound that came off the post from a shot from Emily Humiston.  Humiston would score the third goal of the night with 10 minutes left, then Paige Vanerstrom scored 1:30 later off a penalty corner.  Humiston added the 5th goal on a nifty little move in front of the net with three minutes left.  NA out shot Peters 8-3.  Emily Humiston was named the Wright automotive player of the game.

The Tigers will now play for the championship Monday night at 8:00 pm against Fox Chapel from Fox Chapel high school.  You can listen to the game live on the North Allegheny Sports Network.  The broadcast will start at 7:45.

2010 WPIAL FIELD HOCKEY

The Lady Tigers will compete again in Class AAA of the WPIAL along with eleven other teams.  The top two teams in each section will enter the WPIAL Tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the following method:  Three points for a win and one point for a tie.  Ties for first place will not be broken and ALL tied teams will each receive a section winner's plaque.  In the event of a multiple tie for second, third, or fourth place, head-to-head competition will be used to break the tie.

EXAMPLE:

Team A is clearly first.  Teams B, C, and D are all tied with identical records for second place.  In the head-to-head competition among the three teams, Team B is 3-1, Team C is 2-2, and Team D is 1-3.  Team B is the second place team and is entered into the tournament.

Failure to break the tie by applying the point system will result in applying a point differential system to a plus or minus five to all section games played.  If this procedure does not break the tie, a playoff game will be held.

Duration of the game shall be a maximum of sixty minutes played in two equal halves.  All regular season games ending in a tie will be subject to the following Overtime Procedures:
1.  Prior to the overtime period there shall be a 5-minute intermission
2.  The home team captain calls the coin toss and the winner chooses choice of goal or to take possession of the ball.
3.  Teams will be limited to six field players and a goalkeeper.
4.  If a player was disqualified (red card) during the regulation game,  that tem must play short throughout the overtime.  If a player was suspended (yellow card) the team shall play short until the suspension time is completed.
5.  Only four defenders will be allowed behind the end line on a penalty corner.

The overtime will be 15 minutes "SUDDEN VICTORY".  Regular season games tied after the 15 minute overtime period are recorded as a tie.  There will be no team time-outs, even if a time has unused time outs.  There will be unlimited substitutions.

NOTE:  There have been rules changes approved by the Field Hockey Rules Committee.  Please check the WPIAL website (www.wpial.org)  for details.
