NA SOPHOMORE NAVIGATES ADVERSE CONDITIONS at WPIAL FINALS

Yesterday, at the Long Vue Country Club in Verona, the best boys golfers in WPIAL competed under terribly wet, cold, windy, and rainy conditions.   Sophomore Kevin O’Brien admirably navigated the course early on, shooting 1-over par through seven holes, including a birdie on hole 7.  He fired a 39 on the front nine, putting him just two shots behind the leaders.   On the back nine, with deteriorating conditions, O’Brien shot a 43, finishing the round with an 82.  Belle Vernon senior Bo Lustig won the WPIAL title with an impressive 73.

The boys golf team returns to play Thursday against Sewickley Academy.  The team will tee-off at Diamond Run Golf Club at 3:30.

2010 WPIAL BOYS' GOLF

The Tigers will compete again in Division I of the WPIAL along with 58 other teams.  The top two teams and ties for second place in each section will enter the team championships semi-finals on October 12, 2010.  If two teams tie for second place but one of the teams has lost both head-to-head contests, that team will not enter the tournament round.  Three-way ties will be broken in the following manner:

1.  Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
2.  The team that has the best numerical record among the tied teams will be the qualifier.
3.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter the tournament.

The top three teams from each semifinal site will advance to the team championship round on October 14, 2010.  A team champion will be declared in both divisions.  The top team from the WPIAL team championship will participate in the PIAA Team Tournament.

The format for boys' golf is a team comprised of six golfers who play for a combined team total medal score for the day.  Only the top five scores will count to determine the team winner for the match.  The format is in effect for all team matches.

In case of a tie in the total medal score, each coach will choose two players to represent their squad in a two-hole playoff with the twosome shooting the lowest combined score winning.  If there is still a tie after the two-hole playoff, the players will play "sudden death" extra holes until the tie is broken.

INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Individual Championship will be contested by qualifying players representing member schools.  Each player must follow the approved qualifying process in order to qualify for the championship.  It is not necessary to to determine an alternate from the sectional qualifiers; however, for the semi-finals and final round, an alternate should be selected by designating this player finishing next in order after the qualifiers have been determined.  Ties for the final qualifying spot at the semif-finals or final should be broken with "sudden victory" extra holes.

SECTIONAL QUALIFIERS

Each sectional qualifier will be comprised of six players from each section team.  Each sectional qualifier will be hosted at one of the section courses.  The host school for 2010 is designated by an asterisk (*) in the listing of schools in each section.  The sectional qualifiers have been scheduled for Monday, September 20, 2010.  Players will advance from each sectional qualifier by:
1.  Placing in the top five scores, including ties OR
2.  By shooting the designated target score (within 10 shots of the course rating).

The Golf Steering Committee will determine the course rating, target score, distance, and tees to be played and notify each sectional manager of this information.

SEMI-FINAL QUALIFIERS

Each semi-final qualifier will consist of qualifiers from each of the eight Division I sectional tournaments.  The semi-final round will be conducted on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 or Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at three different courses.

INDIVIDUAL FINALS

The Individual Final Round will consist of forty-eight contestants --- the top twelve from each Division I semifinal round site and the top 12 from the Division 2 championship round.  The Final Round will be held on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at a course to be designated and will be managed by members of the Golf Committee.  The top Division I scorer in the final round will be the Division I champion and will be awarded a gold medal.  The second and third place finishers will be awarded silver and bronze medals respectively.  The top twenty-four contestants from the WPIAL Final Round will qualify for the Western PIAA Individual Qualifying Round with qualifiers from five other PIAA western districts on Wednesday, October 20, 2010.  The two twenty-two contestants from the Western Qualifying Round will qualify for the PIAA Championship Finals at Heritage Hills Golf Course on October 25 and 26, 2010.
