Knight Invitational) FOURTH PLACE FINISH FOR BOYS AT STATES
The North Allegheny boys water polo team capped off their 2010 season with a fourth place finish at the State Championships in Lansdale, PA. NA's trek in the State Championships began with a meeting against LaSalle. The Tigers defeated LaSalle 14-8 thanks to six goals by junior Zach Presto. Junior Evan Staresinic has a nice all around performance with two goals, one assists and two steals.
The Tigers won their second straight game by defeating Souderton 16-8. Presto again posted six goals while junior Rob Clinger added another four. The win advanced North Allegheny to play conference rival Cumberland Valley.
Against CV, goalie Kiean Ashtari made eight saves and six steals to keep the Tigers within striking distance. But ultimately Cumberland Valley held off North Allegheny for a 13-10 win. Presto notched three goals in the loss. Staresinic and Clinger had two apiece.
In the third place game, the Tigers battles Governor Mifflin. Presto and Ashtari again played well. Presto led the way with five goals and Ashtari made nine saves. However, it was Governor Mifflin that would claim the third place prize with a 14-10 victory. Senior captain Mike Magdic netted two goals and two assists in the game to round out his high school water polo career. Sophomore Dom Caputo swiped four steals and helped in the scoring with one assist. Despite the loss, North Allegheny's fourth place finish was the highest by any NA boys team at states.

Entering as a 5th seed, the North Allegheny girls water polo team made a splash at the State Championships by capturing third place. The championships were held at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg. The girls improved five spots from last year, having finished 8th in states in 2009.
In game one, the Lady Tigers went head-to-head with the tournament's top seed, Cumberland Valley. Facing one of the best female water polo athletes in the state, Hannah Sunday, North Allegheny held the star to just two goals with great defense by Dana Scherer and others. Ultimately, it wasn't enough as CV was a little too strong and outlasted the Lady Tigers for an 11-4 victory. Junior Meghan Mahoney scored three of NA's four goals in the game
On Saturday morning, the Lady Tigers regrouped for a 9-6 win over Governor Mifflin. North Allegheny grabbed the lead in the first quarter held it throughout the contest. Senior Adelee Choban led the way with three goals, two assists and four steals. Goalie Allie Pennetti made 14 saves and notched two steals. The win over Governor Mifflin gave the Tigers a confidence that would help lead them to their third place finish.
In their final game in bracket play, the Tigers edged Muhlenberg 9-8 to earn a spot in the third place game. During the regular season, NA had beaten Muhlenberg on two occasions and outscored them 22-12. Muhlenberg played very well in this meeting, but the results were still the same, a North Allegheny victory. Captain Marina Rozick was tops in scoring, netting four goals, two assists and three steals in the game.
With NA's only loss in bracket play
coming against CV, the Tigers qualified for the third place game against
Wilson. Wilson beat NA twice in the regular season, but this time
the Tigers would get the best of their opponent. In Maggie
Howison's first game as a starter, she scored in the opening
possession of the game to give the Tigers the early lead. Allie
Pennetti helped keep Wilson off the scoreboard with an excellent
performance in net. Pennetti made 15 saves and had three steals.
The victory over Wilson was the first in North Allegheny history, and
the third place finish was the highest in school history as well. (Thanks to Coach Rob Semanchik for the information in this report) STATE
