RYAN GIL TO ATTEND GEORGETOWN

On Tuesday’s National Signing Day, North Allegheny standout runner Ryan Gil signed a letter of intent to attend Georgetown University.  In addition to winning the 2010 PIAA cross country individual title, Gil’s efforts also led the Tigers to the team state championship, as well.  He plans to study government at Georgetown.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS GET SWEET ENDING IN HERSHEY

The North Allegheny boys cross country team capped off a tremendous season with a state championship this weekend in Hershey, PA.  Not only did the boys team win the PIAA title, in Class AAA, but senior Ryan Gil claimed first place in the state, besting his third place finish in the PIAA race a year ago.  Also running strong with a top 10 finish was junior Logan Steiner who finished in seventh place.    The PIAA boys' team title is NA's 11th, last done by the Tigers in 1997.

Meanwhile, the girls team also ended the year with success by taking home a third place trophy in their race.  Senior Eleni Mermigas had the best finish for the Lady Tigers at 15th.  Sophomore Alex Gambill finished 21st respectively.  All of North Allegheny's results from the PIAA Class AAA State Meet are below.

CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS QUALIFY FOR STATES

Thursday afternoon at Cooper's Lake both the North Allegheny boys and girls cross country teams qualified for the PIAA Championships.  The boys won WPIAL for the sixth consecutive year, finishing six points ahead of second-place team Baldwin.  Pacing North Allegheny were Ryan Gil and Logan Steiner, crossing the finish line in fourth and fifth place, respectively, behind a trio of runners from North Hills.  Gil was the WPIAL champion last year.  This year, however, he has his sights set on a state individual title, after finishing third last year at the PIAA Championships.  For the rest of the boys, Tim Appman finished 18th, Mike Meehan finished 20th, Tyler Nicotra finished 33rd, Joe Pane finished 39th, and Nick Minich 61st.

For the girls, Alex Gambill led the team, with a time of 19:29, good for tenth place overall.  Eleni Mermigas finished in 11th three seconds behind Gambill.  For the rest of the Lady Tigers, Gabrielle Borza finished 22nd, Sydney Micucci finished 31st, Kelly Harrington finished 35th, Caroline Cwalina finished 44th, and Lizzle Appleton finished 84th.  Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, November 6, in Hershey.  For more coverage of the WPIAL Championships, click here for the mile split times, standings and full results of both AA and AAA races.
