NA SECURES HOME PLAYOFF GAME,
BEATS RAMS 2-0

North Allegheny locked up a home playoff game next week thanks to a 2-0 victory over Pine-Richland on Wednesday night.  Entering the contest, the Lady Tigers trailed Penn-Trafford in the standings by a half-game and needed a win over a tough Pine-Richland team on the road in their season finale to secure a home playoff game.  North Allegheny came through thanks to dynamite defense and the stick skills of leading scorer Carley Thieret.

Already having a record breaking season, Thieret simply added to it with her 29th and 30th goals of the season.  The first of Thieret’s goals on the night came at 6:58 of the first half on pinpoint passing by the Lady Tigers.  Off a penalty corner, Lauren Shideler played the ball to Megan Grzyb who sent a return pass to Shideler.  Then, the senior captain sent a perfect pass to Thieret who buried a wide-open shot in front of the Pine-Richland net to put NA on top, 1-0.

To her credit, Pine-Richland’s goalkeeper Alyssa Lerda made some spectacular saves against the constant NA pressure.  Lerda had some help from defenders Cayla Vondran and Elita Marchetti who time and time again denied the Lady Tigers.  However, the persistent North Allegheny attack eventually broke through for another goal at 19:16 in the second half.  Stepping just inside the circle, Thieret let loose a missile that found the top of the Pine-Richland net and NA held a 2-0 lead.  For her efforts, Thieret was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.  The two goal advantage gave the Lady Tigers some breathing room and must have felt like Mt. Everest to the Rams.  Pine-Richland did get some scoring chances late, but the defensive play of NA’s Maria Baldonieri, Emily Hesidence, Alexa Sofranko, Victoria Robertson, and Michelle Murray kept the Rams off the board.

With the win, North Allegheny improves to 13-4 on the season and 9-1 in section play.  The Lady Tigers await the post-season with their first game coming at home on Wednesday night at Newman Stadium.  Pine-Richland ends the year with a 7-5-2 overall mark and 5-4-1 record in the section.

ON SENIOR NIGHT, 12-0

by Jen Diaz

Senior Carley Thieret scored four times, breaking the school record for career goals, as the Lady Tigers defeated Latrobe 12-0 at Newman Stadium.   Thieret’s performance was quite a show for Senior Night in the final home game of the regular season for the Lady Tigers.

Fellow senior Sara Briggs started the game with a super-quick goal, just 25 seconds into the game.  Briggs earned her fifth of the season and was assisted by junior Emily Humiston.  Thieret earned her first goal for the night just three minutes later to make it 2-0, Tigers.  In less than a minute senior Paige Vanerstrom scored her first goal assisted by Humiston on a corner play.  Thieret added three more goals before the end of the half.  She was assisted by senior captain Lauren Shideler twice on set corner plays.  Thieret has 28 goals on the season, ranking her third in the state.  NA closed the half leading 5-0 with six penalty corners and 15 shots on goal.

To open the second half, Humiston scored on a set corner play assisted by junior Katie Serody.  Five minutes later, junior Rachel Wetzel scored her only goal of the game off a an assist from junior Michelle Murray.  Three minutes later, Murray assisted Serody's first goal of the season on a set corner play.  Humiston added her second goal unassisted and Shideler added her second two minutes later unassisted.  To wrap up the game, Vanerstrom added her second goal off a corner play.  Senior GK Becca Belko earned her ninth shut out this season.  Freshman Isley 'Chip' Smith earned her varsity letter by making an appearance in the game.  NAFH wrapped up the second half with seven penalty corners and 16 shots on goal.  NAFH defense lead by seniors Emily Hesidence and captain Alexa Sofranko did not allow any shots on goal the entire game.

LADY TIGERS HAMMER HEMPFIELD, 12-0

The Hempfield bus showed up a little late for their contest with North Allegheny at Newman Stadium on Thursday night, but a wrong turn on Perry Highway only delayed the inevitable as the Lady Tigers throttled the Spartans, 12-0.  On her way to a four goal night, junior Emily Humiston set the tone for NA with a tally less than five minutes into the game.  For her efforts, Humiston was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game by the North Allegheny Sports Network. Following another Humiston goal at 20:09, the onslaught only continued from there as Carley Thieret posted a hat trick before halftime and senior Paige Vanerstrom scored on a fabulous reverse chip to bring the score to 6-0 at the half.  Thieret’s three goals gives her 22 on the season.

North Allegheny head coach Jen Diaz deployed all of her troops against Hempfield on this night as Humiston added her final two goals of the evening in the second half, and Rachel Wetzel and Marjke Van Der Zee each scored a pair of goals to bring the final score to 12-0.   Humiston’s four goal night brings her season tally to 13 on the year.  Wetzel now has seven goals, while Van Der Zee and Vanerstrom have three goals apiece for the season.  Without facing a shot, goalies Becca Belko and Morgan Mendenhall combined for the shutout.

North Allegheny improves to 10-3 on the season and 6-1 in Section 1.  The Lady Tigers will face Twin Valley this Saturday in a non-section affair.  Start time is slated for 11:00 am.

LADY TIGERS GET REVENGE AGAINST
PENN-TRAFFORD

by Jen Diaz

Atoning for an their only section loss in two years, the North Allegheny Field Hockey Team garnered revenge against Penn-Trafford with a 5-0 win on Tuesday evening.  The Lady Tigers fell to the Warriors on September 14, but last night it was all North Allegheny as a determined squad handed Penn-Trafford defeat on the road.

NA put the pressure on the PT defense early, earning a total of four penalty corners in the first 17 minutes of action.  With less than ten minutes left in the half, that NA finally wore down the defense.  Junior Emily Humiston was the first to get on the board off a tip in from senior Carley Thieret.  Three minutes later, Thieret earned her own goal by pushing the ball underneath a sprawled out Penn-Ttrafford goalkeeper, depositing it in the cage.  Inside two minutes remaining in the half, PT was able to earn two penalty corners.  Both chances were stopped by senior goalkeeper Becca Belko and the defensive corner unit.

Following halftime, NA remained focused on avenging their only loss this year.  To open the half, PT put the pressure on the NA defense.  Senior Paige Vanerstrom and junior Victoria Robertson played great defense against the speedy left side of Penn-Trafford.  The Warriors were able to earn two quick penalty corners in the first 10 minutes, but each attempt was stopped by the Tigers defensive unit.  A few minutes later, Humiston had possession of the ball on the left enplane.  Trying a centering pass, the ball bounced off a PT foot and into the cage, giving her  a second goal in the game.  Thieret pushed the score to 4-0 just 30 seconds later with Humiston earning the assist.

With five minutes left in the game, NA was able to convert on their only penalty corner of the half.  On a broken corner, Vanerstrom was able to hit the ball to junior Michelle Murray, who scored her first goal of the season.  Belko earned 10 saves for the game including a huge lunge with 2 minutes left on the clock to ensure the shut out.  Seniors Emily Hesidence, captain Alexa Sofranko, captain Lauren Shideler and junior Katie Serody had strong marking and defensive circle play.  Hesidence earned a defensive save, her fourth of the season.

The blowout win also gives North Allegheny the advantage in the point differential tie-breaker with Penn-Trafford, putting the Lady Tigers in first place in the section with a 5-1 record.  NA is 9-3 overall.  The Lady Tigers host Hempfield on Thursday night at Newman Stadium.  You can hear all the action live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.  Action gets underway at 7:30 pm.

NA SWEEPS DOUBLE-HEADER
by Jen Diaz

(10/1) The Lady Tigers earned a double-header sweep on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Hudson, Ohio and followed that up with a 5-1 victory over Hawken.

NA vs. Hudson

The interstate rivalry of Hudson and
North Allegheny was last week with Hudson leading the all-time series with two wins in two years.  The NA Tigers were determined to break the streak and notched a 1-0 victory at Newman stadium in game one of a double-header for the Tigers.

However, Hudson came out faster and displayed their ball possession ability in the early going.  After last week's Warwick trip, NA answered with more speed and composure. With 18 minutes left in the half, senior Paige Vanerstrom sent a bullet from the top of the circle that junior Emily Humiston redirected into the net.  NA accumulated one penalty corner and six shots on goal for the half and denied Hudson a shot and a corner for the first half.  The NA defense was lead by senior captain Alexa Sofranko and senior Emily Hesidence whose fast feet and communication kept the defensive circle play composed and smart.

The second half, Hudson was able to generate three shots on goal and two penalty corners, only to be denied by senior GK Becca Belko.  NA speckled three more shots on goal and three more penalty corners but one goal proved to be enough in this battle between the states.

NA vs. Hawken

Another Ohio team came to visit NA for the Ohio double header on Saturday.  Hawken wanted to answer a 2-0 defeat from last year, but senior Carley Thieret proved unstoppable for the Hawken defense, helping the Tigers to a 5-1 victory.  Thieret earned her first goal with 18 minutes remaining in the half.  A little over a minute later, Thieret earned her second goal off a pass from senior Paige Vanerstrom.  With less than six minutes remaining in the half, junior Emily Humiston earned a goal with an assist from Thieret.  Hawken, then answered with a goal with two minutes remaining.  NA answered with the fourth goal of the half with a goal from Thieret with a Humiston assist.  At the half, NA earned six penalty corners and 12 shots on goal.  Senior Becca Belko had three saves in net and allowed one goal.

To open the half, Thieret earned her fourth goal of the game off a Humiston assist.  Coach Jen Diaz was able to clear the bench and give all varsity players playing time.  Sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Mendenhall shut out the Hawken offense when she was subbed into the game with 7:30 remaining.  Senior Emily Hesidence earned a defensive save in the game.

The sweep moves North Allegheny’s record to 8-3 overall.  Next up for the Lady Tigers is a rematch with Penn-Trafford on the road.  The Warriors are the only section team to have defeated North Allegheny this season and the Lady Tigers would love to capture a measure of revenge and climb into a tie atop the Section 1 standings.  Game time is slated for 4:00 pm on Tuesday.

LADY TIGERS BLANK PINE-RICHLAND, 3-0
by Jen Diaz

(9/29) In the final first round section game, Coach Jen Diaz had a challenge for her team.  Score in the first 10 minutes and execute corners.  That is exactly how the NA Tigers started the game.  With just 45 seconds left in the first 10 minutes, NA earned its fourth penalty corner and off a senior Carley Thieret direct shot, senior captain Lauren Shideler got the tip to put it behind the Pine-Richland goalkeeper to jump start the Lady Tigers toward a 3-0 victory.  For the next 15 minutes, the game progressed to a midfield battle until junior Emily Humiston scored off a senior Paige Vanerstrom assist with three minutes left in the first half off NA's sixth earned corner.  NA went into halftime with seven shots on goal and not allowing Pine Richland to get a shot off or get a corner chance.

Ten minutes into the second half, Thieret scored off a Humiston assist to get the team up 3-0.  NA's defense, led by senior captain Alexa Sofranko and Emily Hesidence, did not allow any PR penalty corners in the entire game.  Senior goalkeeper Becca Belko earned the shut out by denying three shots in the second half.  NA's defense also had great transition play from the links, juniors Michelle Murray and Victoria Roberston.

North Allegheny improves to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the section.  Pine-Richland falls to 5-3-1 overall and 3-2 in section play.  The Lady Tigers return to action on Saturday for a non-section doubleheader against Hudson, Ohio and Hawken.

LADY TIGERS SPLIT GAMES AT WEEKEND TOURNAMENT
by Jenn Diaz

NA vs. Warwick, 5-1 Loss

North Allegheny headed out to the Linda Rose Memorial Tourney to be tested by some of the best in the East.  NA's first game was against always strong Warwick.  The last time NA faced Warwick was in 2007 in the State Playoff, a 4-0 loss.  Warwick came out strong and tested the NA defense lead by Seniors Goalkeeper Becca Belko, Captain Alexa Sofranko and Emily Hesidence.  Warwick got its first goal quickly off a penalty corner at the 24:22 mark.  NA stepped up their play and was able to hold off Warwick's offense until they converted on another penalty corner with 7:22 remaining.

At the second half, NA's defense did a much better job of not giving up penalty corners by only giving up five in the half.  Warwick scored their third goal at eight minutes into the half.  They added another with 17:49 left in the game.  Warwick did a master substitution and NA was able to generate more offense in their defensive zone.  Warwick added their fifth goal with 8:43 remaining, then NA's picked it up a notch. Not wanting to be shut out, Senior Carley Thieret got a pass out of the back field and took off on a break away.  She entered the circle where she ripped the ball through the Warwick GK to get on the board.  NA's Hesidence, Sofranko, and Senior Captain Lauren Shideler all earned a defensive save.  Belko earned 26 saves in the game.

NA vs. Conrad Weiser. 2-1 (OT) Win

Recovering from a tough loss to Warwick, NA played for the LRM tourney Consolation Championship vs. Conrad Weiser.  NA dug deep to fight a hard hitting team and was able to get a lead with 5:04 left in the first half.  Senior Paige Vanerstrom scored off a Megan Guzzardi pass in a series in the circle that speckled the CW goalkeeper with plenty fire power.  It was Vanerstrom's that finally broke through.  In the second half, the CW offense earned 10 penalty corners to NA’s two.  The North Allegheny defense was able to step up until 3:49 left in the game when CW finally converted on their 10th corner.  Senior GK Becca Belko earned 8 saves and Alexa Sofranko had three defensive saves in the game.

The game went into an overtime stroke off.  A series of five decided the game.  Senior Carley Theiret started the stroke series with a strong shot in the left corner.  CW answered with the same shot on Belko.  Vanerstrom added her stroke on the right side.  CW answered in the same spot.  Junior Emily Humiston put her stroke in the upper right hand corner.  CW was not able to answer and Belko made the stop on the left side.  Freshman Megan Guzzardi finished her stroke and CW answered.  It was up to Senior Captain Lauren Shideler to finish her stroke to win the game.  She stepped up, took a deep breath and pounded her stroke in the lower right hand corner to give NA their first overtime win of the season.

NA POUNDS HEMPFIELD, 11-0
by Jen Diaz

(9/16/11) - The North Allegheny Field Hockey team bounced back from the tough overtime loss on Wednesday night by defeating Hempfield 11-0.  In the opening minutes of the game Hempfield was able to attack the NA defensive zone but it was the last time they saw that side of the field.  At the 10 minute mark,  senior forward Carley Thieret opened the flurry of 1st half goals with pop in the opposite post.  Three minutes later junior forward Megan Grzyb followed up with her goal assisted by senior forward Sara Briggs.  Senior centermidfielder Lauren Shideler got on the board by dribbling a free hit into the circle and ripping it to the opposite post.  Carley added a 2nd goal with a chip shot to the left post,  over the goalie's shoulder.  The half ended with NA up 8-0 with Briggs adding two more goals,  Thieret and Grzyb each adding an assist and freshman Megan Guzzardi getting a goal.  senior goalkeeper Becca Belko received credit for the shutout of the half and faced no shots on goal.

The second half was not as lucrative for NA but provided all players from the bench to get in on the action.  Guzzardi added her second goal with an assist by junior Majke Van der zee.  Junior Rachel Wetzel added a goal from a Thieret pass and senior Paige Vanerstrom earned a goal in the last 30 seconds of the game.

The North Allegheny back field was unpenetrable with step up plays by seniors Emily Hesidence and Alexa Sofranko, junior Victoria Robertson and freshman Jessica Brandon.

North Allegheny improves to 2-1 with the win and 1-1 in section competition.  Up next, the Lady Tigers have a tough non-section game with Hathaway Brown on Saturday afternoon.  Action gets underway at 2:00 pm at Newman Stadium.

PENN-TRAFFORD STUNS LADY TIGERS
IN OVERTIME

(9/14/11) - Cornell University recruit Marisa Siergiej delivered the game winning goal for Penn-Trafford to deal North Allegheny a sudden death loss, 2-1, on Wednesday night at Newman Stadium.  Siergiej's game winning tally came on a breakaway just over a minute into the extra period.

The loss was stunning for North Allegheny not only because of the quick strike in OT by Siegiej, but also since it appeared the Lady Tigers were on the verge of victory throughout the second half.  With under two minutes remaining in regulation, the Lady Tigers narrowly missed on a great scoring chance that was set up by Carly Theriet.  The NA senior forward raced down the right sideline and passed to an open Rachel Wetzel in front of the net, but her shot was directed wide left and the game stayed tied 1-1.  North Allegheny also had 16 penalty corner opportunities yet they were unable find the back of the Penn-Trafford net.  The Warriors had only four penalty corners for the game.

Penn-Trafford scored first on the night with a goal by leading scorer Taylor Bell to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead with 18:30 on the first half clock.  It was the first goal allowed by North Allegheny in a section game since October 13, 2009, during a 2-1 victory at Norwin.  The Tigers responded to the PT goal nearly four minutes later, when Wetzel scored to tie the game at 1-1.  Late in the first half, Emily Humiston was nicked up on a shot in front of the Penn-Trafford net and missed some game action in the second half.  With Humiston out of the contest, it was Wetzel who helped spur on the NA offensive attack and was constantly near the ball inside the PT circle.  For her efforts, Wetzel was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.  Humiston did return to the game late in the second half and remained during overtime.

Also contributing to the NA cause was junior Victoria Robertson, Emily Hesidence and Michelle Murray who on numerous occasions kept the Lady Tigers in possession of the ball on the back end.  Their efforts allowed seniors Lauren Shideler and Paige Vanerstrom, and junior Megan Grzyb to set up Theriet and Wetzel for solid scoring chances.  However, despite North Allegheny's dominance and ball control throughout most of the second half and the game, it was Penn-Trafford who came away the victors on Siegiej's spectacular breakaway goal in overtime.

North Allegheny falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in Section 1.  Penn-Trafford remains undefeated at 4-0 and is 1-0 in section play.  The Lady Tigers won't have long for a rebound opportunity as NA visits Hempfield tonight.  Action gets underway at 7:30 pm.

LADY TIGERS HAMMER OAKLAND CATHOLIC IN SEASON OPENER

(9/7/11) - The North Allegheny Field Hockey Team began their quest toward another WPIAL championship on Wednesday night with a dominating win over Oakland Catholic, 12-0.  The season opening win was led by Carly Thieret who notched a hat trick and added three assists.  Emily Humiston was also a key cog to the victory by leading the Lady Tigers with four goals on the night.

Thieret scored the night’s first goal just over a minute into the game and the rout was on.  Megan Grzyb collected a pair of goals in the victory, while Sara Briggs, Megan Guzzardi and Victoria Robertson tallied goals as well.  While goalkeeper Becca Belko was virtually untested, anytime the ball was near the net it wasn’t there long thanks to Belko’s alert play.

The Lady Tigers will be back in action on Saturday at the Hershey Invitational.  North Allegheny’s first section contest will be at home next Wednesday night against a quality Penn-Trafford squad.  You can catch all the action live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
