FORYS WINS OPENER AT North Allegheny’s Dom Forys has continued his outstanding freshman season with a preliminary round at the PIAA Individual Wrestling Tournament in Hershey. In his 103 pound opener, Forys defeated Zach Fuentes of Norristown by a 5-2 decision. The victory advances Forys to the quarterfinals against Parkland’s Ethan Lizak (31-9). At 160 pounds, Alex DeCiantis fell to Nazareth’s Ryan Krecker by a 6-4 decision in the prelims. Krecker is a two time fouth-place finisher in the PIAA tournament and narrowly held off the Tigers sophomore. DeCiantis rebounded with a 4-3 first round consolation win over Damian Lascoli of Hollidaysburg. DeCiantis' opponent in the 2nd round of the consolations will be determined on Friday. The Class AAA PIAA Tournament continues with quarterfinals and 2nd round consolations on Friday, beginning at 1:00 pm. To hear all of the mat action in Hershey, courtesy of WJPA Radio, Listen Here! FORYS FINISHES 2nd AT WPIAL TOURNEY, Freshman Dom Forys concluded a successful run in the WPIAL Individual Wrestling Tournament with a 2nd place finish at 103 pounds. After defeating four opponents to get to the finals, Forys dropped a 3-0 decision to Canon-McMillan’s Colt Shorts. The Big Macs standout had lost only one match all season and Forys gave Shorts his toughest match of the tournament. Despite the loss, Forys has qualified for the PIAA Championships next week in Hershey. Sophomore Alex DeCiantis will be joining Forys in Hershey after placing 3rd at 160 pounds. DeCiantis fell in a 160 pound semifinal earlier in the day to Latrobe’s Zack Zavatsky, 5-3, but followed that up with a consolation win over Trinity’s Jordan Roberts. The 13-3 major decision set DeCiantis up to face Kyle Spangler of Hempfield in the third place bout. DeCiantis defeated Spangler by a 2-1 overtime decision for the bronze. Junior Jarred Lux narrowly missed out on a trip alongside Forys and DeCiantis at states. At 171 pounds, Lux fell in the semifinals by injury default to top seed Nick Bonaccorsi of Bethel Park, but rebounded by pinning Belle Vernon’s Adam Nickelson to advance to the third place bout. Unfortunately, Lux lost to Central Catholic’s Austin Coniker 2-1 in overtime. Earlier in the tournament, Lux had beaten Coniker 4-2 in the quarterfinals. Following a tough loss on Friday night in the quarterfinals, Jesse Rodgers (119) shook off any injury concerns and put together back-to-back wins in the consolations. Rodgers defeated Bethel Park's Rob Heuler 5-0 and beat Latrobe's Dom Scalise 8-3 to advance to the semifinals of the consolation bracket. That's where Tim Connelly of Penn-Trafford narrowly edged out Rodgers 3-2. Junior Ryan Sippel (140) also put together a fine showing in the consolations. Sippel downed Jonothan Avon of North Hills 7-4 and followed that up with a 4-3 decision over Anthony Marks of Montour. In the consolation semifinals, Sippel fell to Latrobe's Bryar Pletcher 5-1. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * FORYS IN WPIAL FINALS AT 103 POUNDS North Allegheny freshman Dom Forys will wrestle for gold tonight at the WPIAL Individual Wrestling tournament. Forys defeated Kiski Area’s Ryan Hardaway in a 2-0 decision to advance to the championship final at 103 pounds where he’ll face top seed Colton Shorts of Canon-McMillan. Forys is looking to avenge a previous defeat at the hands of Shorts earlier this year. If nothing else, Forys has guaranteed himself a trip to Hershey next week to compete in the PIAA Wrestling Championships. At 171 pounds, junior Jarred Lux is also wrestling for a trip to states and third place in the consolation bracket. Lux fell in the semifinals by injury default to top seed Nick Bonaccorsi of Bethel Park, but rebounded by pinning Belle Vernon’s Adam Nickelson to advance to the third place bout. Similar to Lux, Alex DeCiantis fell in a 160 pound semifinal to Latrobe’s Zack Zavatsky, 5-3, but followed that up with a consolation win over Trinity’s Jordan Roberts. The 13-3 major decision has DeCiantis in a third place bout against Kyle Spangler of Hempfield. The consolation finals get underway at 5:30 pm at Canon-McMillan High School, followed by the Championship finals at 7:00 pm. A complete listing of all North Allegheny results from the WPIAL Individual Wrestling Tournament will be posted on Sunday. THREE TIGERS MOVE ON TO SEMIFINALS North Allegheny’s Dom Forys, Alex DeCiantis, and Jarred Lux have all advanced to the semifinals of the Class AAA WPIAL Individual Wrestling Tournament. Forys (103) earned a pin at 3:29 over Gateway’s A.J. Wilkins in the quarterfinals on Friday night. Forys will face Kiski Area’s Ryan Hardaway on Saturday in the semifinals. For the second straight night, DeCiantis (160) picked up a narrow victory to advance. This time DeCiantis defeated Anthony Cable of Greensburg Salem by a 3-2 decision. DeCiantis will battle Latrobe’s Zack Zavatsky in the semifinals. Lux (171) earned a 4-2 win in the quarterfinals to dispose of Pittsburgh Central Catholic’s Austin Coniker. In the semifinals, Lux takes on top-seed Nick Bonaccorsi of Bethel Park. Seth Marx (285) appeared to be joining his aforementioned teammates in the semifinals, but Kiski’s Shane Kuhn pulled off a reversal and picked up back points as time ran out to come away with a stunning 5-3 victory over Marx. The NA senior will wrestle next in the second round of the consolations. Jesse Rodgers (119), Ryan Sippel (140), and Kevin Monper (145) also took a loss in the quarterfinals. Rodgers’ defeat was perhaps the most heartbreaking on the night as he was beaten 2-0 in overtime by Connellsville’s Ethan Kenney. Rodgers needed help walking off the mat following the match with an apparent leg injury. Sippel dropped a 4-3 decision to Albert Gallatin’s Chris Milligan and Monper was pinned by Canon-McMillan’s Nick Catalano. In the second round of the consolations on Saturday, Sippel will battle Jonathon Avon of North Hills while Monper will meet West Allegheny’s Tanner Cogar. If Rodgers can regroup with a night of rest, he’ll take on Rob Heuler of Bethel Park in the consolations. Meanwhile, the first round of the consolation bracket was not very kind to North Allegheny wrestlers. The consolations saw Drew Landefeld (125), Ben Schweiger (135), and Colton Byerly (152) all take losses. Only Jake Smith (215) was victorious in his consolation match as he pinned James Davis of West Mifflin at 3:41. Smith will meet Dante Nania of Hempfield in the second round. The final day of the WPIAL Tournament gets underway early on Saturday at 10:30 am. The consolation finals are set for 5:00 pm and the championship finals are slated for 7:00 pm at Canon-McMillan High School. Dom Forys (103) picked up an easy 16-0 technical fall over Penn-Trafford’s Darion Lutton to start preliminary round action. Forys will face sophomore A.J. Wilkins from Gateway in the quarterfinals. Jesse Rodgers (119) captured a 9-1 major decision over Luke Palamides of Peters Township. Up next, the NA freshman is Ethan Kenney of Connellsville. Ryan Sippel (140) earned a measure of revenge for North Allegehny’s loss to Franklin Regional in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Team Tournament. Sippel, who fell to Chris Little 10-9 in their last meeting, defeated the Panthers senior, 6-3, this time around. Sippel will take on Albert Gallatin’s Chris Milligan in the next round. In a physical match, senior Kevin Monper (145) edged Baldwin’s Alex Greguric for a 3-2 decision. Monper was shaken up during the match and expended nearly all of his injury time before continuing on, gutting out the victory. Things won’t get any easier for Monper in the quarterfinals as he’ll face top-seed Nick Catalano of Canon-McMillan who boasts a record of 41-1. A curious ending to the third period at 160 pounds allowed Connellsville’s Jeremy Basinger to force overtime against NA’s Alex DeCiantis. Undaunted, DeCiantis quickly took down Basinger in the extra period to pick up a 4-2 overtime victory. The Tigers’ sophomore goes up against Anthony Cable of Greensburg Salem in the quarterfinals. Jarred Lux (171) had little trouble with Moon’s Ben Barcaster, picking up a 14-4 major decision. Lux will go up against Austin Coniker of Pittsburgh Central Catholic in the quarterfinals. Rounding out the night at 285 pounds, senior Seth Marx downed Randy Bush of Baldwin for a 5-1 decision. Among the Tigers taking part in the first round consolations, Drew Landefeld (125) will match up with Chris Nuss of Pittsburgh Central Catholic. In a pigtail match, Landefeld earned a pin fall over Jake Terrick of Elizabeth Forward but fell to 3rd-seeded Derrick Evanovich of Peters Township in the preliminaries. Ben Schweiger (135) started his night with a pigtail victory over Jeff Miller of Trinity, but lost to top-seed Ty Lydic of Latrobe in the prelims. Schweiger faces Tommy Henderson of Waynesburg Central in the consolations. Also a winner in a pigtail match, Colton Byerly (152) followed with a 9-2 defeat to Franklin Regional’s Ben Johnson. In the consolations, Byerly will battle Colin Siford of Hampton. Also in the consolations at 215 pounds, senior Jake Smith faces James Davis of West Mifflin. The WPIAL Individual Tournament will continue Friday night at 6:00 pm with the quarterfinals and first round consolations at Canon-McMillan High School. NA FALLS IN HEARTBREAKER AT The North Allegheny run in the WPIAL Team Tournament came to a heartbreaking end on Wednesday night in a 33-30 defeat at the hands of the Franklin Regional Panthers in the quarterfinals. The match came down to the very last bout, a 285 pound meeting between NA’s Adam Doud and Franklin Regional’s Josh Hall. Despite a valiant effort by Doud, Hall would claim a 3-0 decision to advance the Panthers to the semi-finals at Chartiers Valley High School on Friday night. The match opened at 103 pounds and freshman Dom Forys, as he seemingly always does, picked up a first period pin fall over Adam Shorthouse to give North Allegheny a 6-0 lead. Franklin Regional’s Connor Medlang earned a third period pin fall over Phil Bachman to tie the team score at 6-6. In an exciting bout at 119 pounds, Jesse Rodgers pulled out a 6-5 overtime decision to put the Tigers back in front, 9-6. For his hard fought victory, Rodgers was named the Wright Automotive Wrestler of the Match. However, the Panthers rolled off four consecutive victories, including pins by Penn State recruit Nico Megaludis, Evan Thompson, and Trevor Medlang. With a 27-9 lead after seven bouts, Franklin Regional certainly had the upper hand, but things were just about to get interesting. Senior Kevin Monper broke the string of victories for the Panthers by defeating Kevin Wilhelm by a 7-2 decision at 145 pounds. The win was nearly a pin fall for Monper, who had Wilhelm in dire straights near the end of the second period. However, time ran out in the period just before Monper could finish off Wilhelm for the pin. The decision for Monper pulled NA to within 27-12. Ben Johnson followed with a 9-4 decision for the Panthers and the Franklin Regional lead swelled to 30-12. That’s when North Allegheny put together a string of four consecutive victories of their own, including two pins by junior Jarred Lux and senior Jake Smith. First, Alex DeCiantis edged Anthony Petrarca by an 8-7 decision at 160 pounds to pull NA to 30-15. Lux and Smith collected back-to-back pins at 171 and 189 as the Tigers clawed back to within 30-27. Senior Seth Marx defeated Luke Fleck 6-1 to even the team score to 30-30, pinning the hopes of both teams on the final bout. In the match between Doud and Hull, it was an escape in the second period that put Hull ahead, 1-0. With Doud desperate to rally in the third period, Hull managed a take down with time ticking off the clock to put the bout and match away for Franklin Regional. Despite the loss for North Allegheny, it was another successful campaign for the Tigers. NA added yet another section title to their long list of accolades, and finished the year with a record of 15-3. Now the Tigers will focus on individual mat action at the WPIAL Sectionals on February 26.

TIGERS EARN SECTION TITLE The North Allegheny Tigers successfully defended their Section-3 title by once again defeating the Butler Golden Tornado in the section championship. Just like last year, the match was a close one with the Golden Tornado as the Tigers edged Butler, 30-29. The first bout of the championship match with Butler was perhaps a foreshadowing of the final score. At 145 pounds, senior Kevin Monper defeated Eric Tuck by a 1-0 decision to give the Tigers a 3-0 team lead. The Golden Tornado rebounded with two straight major decisions and a regular decision to grab an 11-3 advantage. North Allegheny battled back, starting with a hard fought victory by senior Jake Smith at 189 pounds. Smith trailed 3-2 in the third period but forced a stalling call on Matt Pribis to even the score and draw overtime. From there, Smith scored a take down on Pribis and earned the victory, 5-3. Smith’s win brought the team score to 11-6, Butler. At 215 pounds, Adam Doud picked up a win by injury over Robert Puncher. It was an unfortunate break for Butler as Puncher went down with an apparent knee injury, forcing his exit. The injury to Puncher allowed the Tigers to take a 12-11 lead. After going ahead by a point, NA increased their lead to seven when Seth Marx notched a huge pin over Adam Steiner in the third period at 285 pounds. Seth was named the Wright Automotive Wrestler of the Match for his key victory. With North Allegheny leading 18-11, freshman Dom Forys barely broke a sweat against Cody Houston and scored a pin at 103 pounds to run NA’s advantage to 24-11. Butler would respond with a pin fall of their own by Blake Caudill and a decision by Korey Caudill to pull within 24-20. However, decisions by Drew Landefeld and Jason Monper put NA ahead by 10 team points with just two bouts to go. Even though Butler’s Cody Hartman claimed a 5-3 decision over Ben Schweiger, the Tigers locked up the win and the section title as NA held a 30-23 lead with only one more bout remaining. With Ryan Sippel banged up, the Tigers elected to forfeit the final bout to Dillon Weston to bring the final score to 30-29, North Allegheny. With the win, North Allegheny is now 13-2 on the season. Butler falls to 23-3. The Tigers enter the WPIAL Team Tournament as the top seed from Section-3 and will await their opponent next week.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * CANON-McMILLAN HANDS TIGERS 49-16 DEFEAT Using a strong start and an equally strong finish, the Canon-McMillan Big Macs defeated North Allegheny 49-16 on Thursday night. The loss was the second on the season for the Tigers, dropping their record to 6-2. The defending WPIAL champion Big Macs remain undefeated at 8-0. The Tigers, the perennial favorite in Section-3, were hoping to overcome injuries and give the Big Macs a run for their money. However, pin falls by Dario Dobbin and Will Pihiou at 135 and 140 pounds to start the night had NA behind the eight ball immediately. Trailing 12-0, Canon-McMillan’s Nick Catalano earned a 13-6 decision at 145 pounds to improve the Big Macs lead to 15-0. Colton Byerly got North Allegheny on the board by picking up a 5-2 decision over Mark Dami at 152 pounds to cut Canon-Mac’s lead to 15-3. After the Big Mac’s Cody Renzilli earned a 9-3 win over Matt Wolf, the Tigers’ wrestlers earned back to back wins to climb back into the match. Sophmore Alex DeCiantis wrestled up a weight class to 171 pounds and picked up a 6-4 decision over Zach Thomas. Also wrestling up a weight class, Jarred Lux dominated the action against Ian Binotto at 189 pounds and collected a pin fall at 1:48 of the third period. For his outstanding effort, Lux was named the Wright Automotive Wrestler of the Match. The fall by Lux brought the team score to 18-12, Canon-McMillan. Unfortunately for the Tigers, the reigning WPIAL champs would regain the momentum with back to back pins by Alex Campbell and Cody Klempay at 215 and 285 pounds. North Allegheny would win only one of the remaining matches when Jesse Rodgers earned an impressive 13-1 major decision over Sammy Minor at 125 pounds. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS PUMMEL PINE-RICHLAND 71-3 In their Section-3B opener, the North Allegheny Tigers crushed Pine-Richland on Tuesday night, 71-3. The Tigers were aided by seven forfeits, but won all but one of the remaining matches on the docket. North Allegheny opened the night at 103 pounds with a pin fall by freshman Domenic Forys over Luke Bodnar at one minute in the first period to grab a 6-0 lead. Forys' pin was the first of four by the Tigers on the night. Three of those four pins were collected by NA freshman. At 130 pounds, freshman Jason Monper pinned Austin Killian with 38 seconds remaining in the third period. In a 160 pound bout, freshman Colton Byerly pinned Ian Strawser at 26 seconds in the second period. To cap the night, Tigers' senior Dalton Bailey pinned Connor Hennessy in the 285 pound weight class. While the pin falls and forfeits created an insurmountable lead for North Allegheny, the bout of the night came at 215 pounds. Senior Jake Smith, who was jumping up a weight class from 189, defeated Pine-Richland standout Ben Balish by a 5-3 final. The win was impressive not only because Smith was wrestling up a weight class, but because Balish recently earned first place at the Eastern Area Invitational Wrestling Tournament this past weekend at 215 pounds. For his victory, Smith was named the Wright Automotive Wrestler of the Match. North Allegheny begins section action with a victory and is 1-0 in Section-3B and is also 1-0 overall.
