BETHEL PARK SNAPS NA'S WIN STREAK
WITH 2-1 VICTORY

(3/3/12)  Two of the hottest teams in the PIHL did battle on Friday night and the Bethel Park Black Hawks earned their 10th win in-a-row by beating the North Allegheny Tigers, 2-1.  The loss snapped a seven game winning streak for the Tigers.  Bethel Park used a stifling defense to hold down NA’s high powered attack, limiting the Tigers to just 14 shots on goal.  Bethel Park posted 25 shots on net and poked a goal past both of NA’s goaltenders, Tyler Kuhn and Matt Goda.  It was Derek Lesnak’s goal in the second period that beat Kuhn that proved to be the game winner.

It looked like business as usual for the Tigers to open the game as Zach Morton posted a goal just 1:34 in to give NA a 1-0 lead.  Dale Reither swung the pendulum in Bethel Park’s direction at the 5:50 mark of the first period with a short-handed goal that tied up the score, 1-1.  From there, the game was a defensive struggle with both teams finding the offensive ice limited.  The tie was broken for good at the 5:57 mark of the second period when Lesnak tallied the game winner.  Bethel Park’s Alex Blum kept the inside of his net clear of pucks by stopping 13 NA shots.

North Allegheny ends the regular season with a record of 16-5-1, while Bethel Park improves to 13-7-1 on the year.  The Tigers will enter the post-season as the Section 2 champions and will earn a first round bye.  Depending upon how things play out, North Allegheny could very well face Bethel Park again in the PIHL quarterfinals.

TIGERS BOMBARD BUTLER, 13-1

(2/22/12)  A seven goal first period helped power the Tigers to their seventh straight win as North Allegheny crushed Butler on Tuesday night, 13-1.  It was the fourth straight blowout victory for the NA Ice Hockey Team.  In the last four games, the Tigers have won by a combined 34-3.

In the blowout over Butler, the Tigers received hat tricks from Zach Morton and Justin Leonard.  Both players finished with four points on the night, as did Grant Chidester who set up teammates with three assists.  Joe Griffin got the scoring started with a goal just 30 seconds into the game.  From that point the rout was on.  Goalies Matt Goda and Tyler Kuhn combined to stop 22 shots in the victory.  Only a late third period goal by Tanner Gilliland prevented the Tigers from posting the shutout.

North Allegheny improves to 16-4-1 on the year and increases their lead in the Section 2 standings over second-place Mt. Lebanon to four points.  Butler drops to 1-18-0 on the season.  The Tigers will cap their regular season schedule with a game at Bethel Park on Friday, March 2.  Face-off is slated for 7:00 pm.

TIGERS SHUT OUT SPARTANS, 8-0

(2/13/12)  The North Allegheny Tigers stormed out of the gates with a four goal first period and hammered the Hempfield Spartans on Monday night, 8-0.  Harry Kramer, Matt Neurohr, Matt Fantaski, and Marty Hubert all tallied first period goals to lift NA to a 4-0 lead.  Things only got worse for the Spartans when Fantaski scored a power play goal just 22 seconds into the second period on a feed from Hubert and Dalton Landman.  The Tigers leading scorer, Joe Griffin, scored his 17th goal of the season at the 4:52 mark to increase the NA lead to 6-0 by the end of the period.

In the third, the Tigers capped the win on a marker by Zach Morton and a power play goal by Neurohr.  Junior goalie Tyler Kuhn got the start and stopped all 11 shots he faced in the game for the shutout.  Kuhn lowers his goals against average to a minuscule 1.18 for the season.

With the win, the first place Tigers improve to 15-4-1 on the year and maintains a two point lead over Mt. Lebanon in Section 2.  Hempfield drops to 3-16-0 for the season.  North Allegheny has the rest of the week off and will return to the ice on Tuesday, February 21 for a home game against Butler.  Face-off is slated for 8:30 pm in Warrendale.

GRIFFIN'S HAT TRICK LEADS NA PAST CENTRAL CATHOLIC, 7-2

(2/11/12) Joe Griffin's hat trick and a five goal third period helped vault North Allegheny over the Central Catholic Vikings, 7-2, on Friday night in Harmerville.  The third period outburst was the second of which this week for the Tigers.  NA used four goals in the third period on Tuesday night to set down the McDowell Trojans.

In the early going against Central Catholic, it was the Vikings who struck first and quickly.  Kevin Kline scored a power play goal just over a minute into the game to put the Vikings in front, 1-0.  At 3:46 of the first period, the Tigers evened the score on a Charles Johnson goal that was assisted by Matt Neurohr and Josh King.

In the second period, the Tigers broke the tie on Griffin's first goal of the night less than two minutes into the period to bring the score to 2-1, NA.  Near the end of the second period, Central Catholic's James Pozycki was called for roughing, setting the stage for the Tigers big third period.

North Allegheny quickly took advantage of the power play situation with a Harry Kramer goal 49 seconds into the third period.  Kline would strike again for Central Catholic at 1:51 of the period to pull the Vikings to within one goal at 3-2.  CC's momentum didn't last long as Griffin scored his second goal of the contest just 18 seconds later to make it 4-1, North Allegheny.  The Tigers took control of the game with two more goals in quick succession by Zach Morton and by Griffin, to notch the hat trick.  Kramer capped the scoring with another power play goal midway through the period to bring the final score to 7-2.  NA goalie Matt Goda earned the victory by stopping 18 of the 20 shots he faced.

The Tigers maintain their two point lead in first place of Section 2 and improve their record to 14-4-1 on the year.  Central Catholic remains in first place in Section 3 despite the loss, dropping their record to 7-8-2.  North Allegheny returns to the ice on Monday night with a visit to Hempfield.  Face-off is slated for 7:15 pm.

TIGERS USE THREE POWER PLAY GOALS TO POWER PAST McDOWELL, 6-0

(2/8/12) Part of a four goal outburst in the third period, the Tigers used three power play goals to punish the Erie McDowell Trojans on Tuesday night, 6-0.   Joe Griffin, Matt Neurohr, and Daniel Bostedo all scored on the man advantage in the third period to bury the Trojans.  North Allegheny also received a three point night from Charles Johnson, who scored the Tigers first two goals of the game.  Johnson tallied a goal in the first and second periods to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead heading into the third period.  Goalkeeper Matt Goda wasn't very busy thanks to a strong defense, but he did stop all 10 shots he faced in the contest.

With the win, the Tigers improve their winning streak to four in-a-row and maintain their lead in the Section 2 standings with a 13-4-1 record.  The Trojans fall to 6-12-0 on the year.  North Allegheny will visit the first place team in Section 3 on Friday night, the Central Catholic Vikings.  Face-off is slated for 8:30 pm at the BladeRunners in Harmarville.

GRIFFIN'S SLAPPER PUTS NA BACK IN FIRST PLACE

For an archived broadcast of the game, click here!

(2/2/12) North Allegheny rallied from a two goal deficit with three third period goals to beat the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils on Thursday night, 4-3.  The Tigers top scorer Joe Griffin tallied the game tying goal midway through the third and added the game winner on a power play one minute later to lift NA to the victory.  The win puts NA back in first place in Section 2.

The first two periods belonged to Mt. Lebanon as the Blue Devils struck first on a goal by Trevor Nelson with 4:54 remaining in the first period.  Just before the period ended, James Phillips scored on a power play to give Mt. Lebanon a 2-0 leading heading into the second.  Things could've been much worse for the Tigers as the Blue Devils hit the post twice in the first period but came away empty.

While Tigers goalie Matt Goda had a little help from the pipe behind him in the first period, he helped himself early in the second period when Phillips was dragged down on a tripping call and was rewarded a penalty shot.  Goda stuffed Phillips on the penalty shot which quickly gave NA a spark.  The Tigers responded on a great individual effort by Cody Black who made a terrific diving backhanded shot in the Mt. Lebanon crease and pushed the puck past Michael Dorazio to pull NA to within 2-1.  Black's goal was a power play tally and came at 5:08 of the second period.  As they were in the first two periods though, the Blue Devils were again one step ahead of North Allegheny as Thomas Kang scored on a 2-on-1 break thanks to a perfect pass from Phillips and the score was 3-1, Blue Devils, after two periods.

After intermission, the Tigers flipped the switch and played with a fury that the Blue Devils were unprepared for.  Sophomore Justin Leonard scored his second goal of the season with 10:04 to go in the game to bring the score to 3-2, Blue Devils.  At 7:58 of the third, senior captain Jake Hubert fed Joe Griffin with a beautiful one-touch pass in front which was promptly buried in the back of the net to tie the score at 3-3.  A minute later, Griffin gave the Tigers the lead on a power play slap shot from the blue line to put NA in front for good, 4-3.  For scoring the game tying and game winning goals, Griffin was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

North Allegheny improves to 12-4-1 while Mt. Lebanon falls to 12-4-1 on the season.  Because the Tigers have swept the season series over the Blue Devils, NA owns the tie-breaker with Mt. Lebanon and sits atop the section with 25 points.  North Allegheny will be back in action on Tuesday night when the Tigers host the McDowell Trojans.  The game is scheduled for an 8:30 start in Warrendale.

TIGERS TOPPLE PETERS TOWNSHIP, 3-2,
AT SOUTHPOINTE

(1/20/12) A pair of goals from Cody Black lifted North Allegheny to a 3-2 victory over the Peters Township Indians at Southpointe on Thursday night.  The Tigers started the beginning of a rugged stretch of road games with a hard fought win as goalie Tyler Kuhn stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced for his first victory of the season.  Kuhn got the start in net as regular goalie Matt Goda got the night off.

Peters Township was looking to test Kuhn early in the game and controlled the puck throughout the first few minutes  but had barely a shot on goal to show for it.  After an early timeout by NA head coach Jim Black, the Tigers offense sprung to life, peppering Peters goalie Jesse Borne with shot after shot.  At 6:14 of the first period, Charles Johnson let loose a slap shot that was deflected in by Cody Black and the Tigers scored first for a 1-0 lead.  The North Allegheny pressure brought forth another goal at the 3:52 mark of the first period when a Dalton Landman smoked a slap shot past Borne for a 2-0 Tigers lead.

North Allegheny would hold that two goal lead until late in the second period as the Indians finally revived their offensive pace.  In a scramble in front of the Tigers net, Trevor Recktenwald poked in a loose puck and the Indians had cut the score to 2-1.  The respite for Peters Township didn't last long as Black struck again just 16 seconds later.  From behind the Indians net, the Tigers forward caromed the puck off the back of Borne and into the net to increase the NA lead to 3-1.  The shot and goal from an impossible angle regained the Tigers momentum heading into the third.   For his efforts and scoring what proved to be the game winning goal, Cody Black was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

Peters Township, playing without three of their top players including their leading scorer and top goaltender who were away for a hockey tournament in Boston, forged ahead and scored with under five minutes to play to cut NA's lead to 3-2.  Davan Groom led a 3-on-2 break for the Indians and fed a perfect backhand pass to Recktenwald who beat Kuhn on the forehand near the crease to pull Peters Township to within one.  The Tigers staved off a final flurry by the Indians in the final minute of the game to hold onto the 3-2 victory.

North Allegheny improves to 10-4-1 on the season, returning to a first place tie with Mt. Lebanon in Section 2.  Peters Township falls to 8-3-3 on the season and remains in second place in Section 1.  North Allegheny visits Fox Chapel on Monday night.

TIGERS EDGED 3-2, BIG MACS REMAIN UNBEATEN

(1/18/12) Canon-McMillan's special team units led the way on Tuesday night as the Big Macs held off the North Allegheny Tigers, 3-2.  An Alex Baskakov power play goal and an Anthony Tonkovich short-handed tally allowed the Big Macs to remain undefeated on the season.  Tonkovich's goal broke a 2-2 tie at 12:18 of the second period and proved to be the game winning goal.  Canon-McMillan goalie Ryan Christian held the Tigers at bay through the entire third period to preserve the victory.

The Tigers stormed out of the gates in the contest when Matthew Fantaski scored an unassisted goal just over a minute into game to put NA in front, 1-0.  The Big Macs tied the score at 1-1 at 2:35 of the opening period on a Zachary Swink goal.  By the end of the period, Canon-McMillan had the lead thanks to Baskakov's power play goal, pulling the Big Macs ahead, 2-1.

The Tigers rallied to tie score at 2-2 at 4:21 of the second period on a Josh King goal off an assist from Shawn Baird.  Then Tonkovich scored his short-handed goal before the end of the second stanza to put Canon-McMillan ahead for good.

The loss drops North Allegheny's record to 9-4-1 on the season while Canon-McMillan stays unbeaten at 14-0-0.  The Tigers hope to bounce back on Thursday night with a road game against the Peters Township Indians.  The puck drops at 9:05 and the game will be carried live via the internet from Southpointe on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

TIGERS BLANK RAIDERS AT OUTDOOR GAME,
3 TIGERS NAMED ALL-STARS

(1/15/12) Zach Morton broke a scoreless tie with a third period goal to help lift the North Allegheny Tigers over the Seneca Valley Raiders, 2-0, at the North Park Outdoor Rink on Friday night.  Part of the PIHL Outdoor Charity Series, the game's tickets sales and proceeds were donated to the Susan B. Komen for the Cure Foundation to support breast cancer research.  The Tigers were honored to participate in the outdoor charity event and give the black and goal fans in attendance a shutout victory to celebrate on a frigid and breezy night.

North Allegheny dictated the pace throughout the game and outshot the Raiders 35-16 on the night.  Despite heavily outshooting Seneca Valley, the play of Raiders goalie Ethan Helbig kept the game scoreless at 0-0 through two periods.  Finally at the 7:06 mark of the third, the Tigers broke the ice with Morton's goal to pull NA ahead, 1-0.  North Allegheny closed out the outdoor contest with a Jake Hubert tally at 11:18 of the third period to lock up the 2-0 win.  Tigers goalie Matt Goda stopped all 16 shots he faced to notch the shutout.

In addition to the victory, the Tigers had three players named to the PIHL Class AAA All-Star Game.  Captain and senior forward Jake Hubert, alternate captain and senior defenseman Dalton Landman, and junior forward Joe Griffin were all Southwest Conference selections.  The three will participate in the all-star contest on Sunday, January 22 at the Rostraver Ice Gardens.

Meantime, North Allegheny improves to 9-3-1 with the victory over Seneca Valley, while the Raiders drop to 1-11-0.  North Allegheny, who has won seven of their last eight games, and will face undefeated Canon-McMillan on Tuesday night.  The puck drops at 6:30 in Warrendale.

BETHEL PARK SNAPS NA'S WINNING STREAK AT 6

(1/11/12) Dale Reither's third period goal lifted Bethel Park to a 3-2 victory over North Allegheny on Tuesday night and snapped the Tigers' six game winning streak.  Reither's goal came just 29 seconds into the second period and BP goalie Alex Blum would not permit a game tying goal despite the Tigers best efforts.  The Blackhawks outshot the Tigers 24-16 in the contest.

North Allegheny struck first on the night on a tally by Josh King less than three minutes into the game and the Tigers had a 1-0 lead.  Bethel Park quickly tied the score at 4:04 of the period on a goal by Jacob Worcester.  Just over 30 seconds later, Derek Lesnak gave the Blackhawks the lead 2-1.  North Allegheny knotted things up before the end of the period on a goal by Cody Black to bring the score to 2-2.

After a fast paced first period, the scoring slowed in the remainder of the game as no goals were scored in the second period.  The only marker in the third period came on Reither's goal early in the third to give Bethel Park the 3-2 victory.

North Allegheny falls to 8-3-1 with victory and drops back into second place in Section 2.  Bethel Park lifts their record to 5-7-1 on the year.  The Tigers will try to rebound on Friday night with a section meeting with Seneca Valley.  Face-off is slated for 8:00 pm.

TIGERS CLIMB ATOP SECTION WITH
THIRD PERIOD OUTBURST

(1/3/11) In a battle for first place in Section 2, North Allegheny used a trio of third period goals to topple the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils, 4-2, on Tuesday night.  The third period outburst was led in part by Jake Hubert who scored a goal and assisted on another as North Allegheny won their sixth straight.  NA Goalie Matthew Goda stopped 23 of 25 shots for his eighth victory of the season, the same amount wins he posted during his All-Star junior campaign a year ago.

After a scoreless first period, the Blue Devils struck just eight seconds into the second period on a power play goal by John Gyurina to give Mt. Lebanon a 1-0 lead.  However, an interference call on Mt. Lebanon’s Stephen Beuke minutes later opened the door to the Tigers first goal.  Dalton Landman took full advantage of the power play opportunity and scored the game tying goal at 4:00 of the period.

North Allegheny broke the 1-1 tie thirty seconds into the third period on another one-man advantage when Cody Black found the back of the Mt. Lebanon net to pull NA ahead, 2-1.  At 2:25 of the third, Joe Griffin added onto the Tigers lead with his eighth goal of the season to increase the score to 3-1.  The Blue Devils would not go away quietly though as Trevor Nelson pulled Mt. Lebanon to within one with over nine minutes remaining.  Mt. Lebanon’s comeback hopes were short lived however as Jake Hubert put the Tigers win on ice with a goal at 6:53 of the third period to bring the score to its eventual final, 4-2.

North Allegheny improves to 8-2-1 with victory and climbs into first place in Section 2.  The Blue Devils fall to 8-3-0 and drop into second place in the section for the first time all season.  The rematch between these two schools will take place on February 2 at Mt. Lebanon.  In the meantime, the Tigers will host Bethel Park on Tuesday, January 10.  The puck drops at 6:30 pm.

NA WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT,
HANDS PENN-TRAFFORD FIRST LOSS

(12/20/11) The Tigers knocked the Penn-Trafford Warriors from the ranks of the unbeaten on Tuesday night with a 7-5 victory at the BladeRunners complex in Warrendale.  The Tigers were unwelcoming hosts to the top team in Section 4, handing the Warriors their first loss behind three point efforts by Shawn Baird and Joe Griffin.

It was Baird who jump started the Tigers at 8:20 of the first period to give NA an early 1-0 lead.  Laying credence to their unblemished record though, the Warriors tied the game just 11 seconds later on a goal by Conlan Sodrosky.  A minute later, Dan Maier put Penn-Trafford in front, 2-1, to end the scoring in the first period.

North Allegheny bombarded Penn-Trafford goalie Michael Cheswick to open the second period with a barrage of goals to reclaim the lead and momentum.  The Tigers scored three goals within the first 1:39 of the period, the first of which came on a Connor Cash shot just 39 seconds in.  Matthew Fantaski followed with a tally of his own and then assisted on a Dalton Landman power play goal to bring the score to 4-2, Tigers.  North Allegheny wasn’t done yet as Baird scored his second goal of the night at 5:31 of the period to increase the Tigers lead to 5-2.  Penn-Trafford did close the gap to within one before the end of the period on markers by Matthew Burger and Maier.  The latter was a power play goal to shrink NA’s lead to 5-4 heading to the third period.

A high sticking penalty on PT’s Daniel Greene over halfway through the third period gave the Tigers a power play that they converted into a Griffin goal and a 6-4 advantage.  North Allegheny had a chance to put Penn-Trafford away on another man-advantage opportunity just a minute later, but the pesky Warriors posted a short-handed goal by Sodrosky to climb to within one goal again, 6-5.  The Tigers put Penn-Trafford away on Griffin’s second goal of the night with less than four minutes remaining in the game to bring the final score to 7-5, Tigers.

The impressive victory pushes the Tigers record to 7-2-1 on the season and one point behind first place Mt. Lebanon in Section 2.  Penn-Trafford falls to 9-1-0 on the year and remains a point in front of second place Norwin in Section 4.  The Tigers will have the rest of December off before a clash with the Blue Devils on January 3 in a battle for first place in the section.  The puck drops at 6:30 pm in Warrendale.

NA RETURNS TO HOME ICE WITH 3-1 WIN OVER SHALER

(12/13/11) After three straight games on road ice the North Allegheny Tigers returned to the friendly confines of the BladeRunners complex in Warrendale and shot down the Shaler Titans for a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night.  The Tigers started the scoring early in the first period with a goal from Matt Fantaski to put NA in front, 1-0, at the 2:37 mark of the opening period.  Fantaski’s goal was set up by Joe Griffin and Shawn Baird on the assists.  At 8:10 of the period, the Tigers struck again when Jacob Hubert scored to expand the NA advantage to 2-0.  Fantaski and Griffin has the assists on the Hubert tally.

A slashing penalty on Shaler’s Matthew Bour gave the Tigers a power play to open the second period and the NA skaters took quick advantage.  Cody Black notched a power play goal on a feed from Harry Kramer to improve the Tigers lead to 3-0 less than two minutes into the second.  Shaler posted their only marker of the game at 10:28 of the second period when Taylor Colamarino scored to make it 3-1, Tigers.  That would be the last goal of the night as the NA defense clamped down, allowing only 13 shots all night.  Goaltender Matt Goda stopped the remaining 12 shots he faced to lift North Allegheny to their third consecutive victory.

North Allegheny improves to 5-2-1 on the season and remains in second place in Section 2.  Shaler falls to 3-4 but remains in a first place tie with Central Catholic in Section 3.  The Tigers will host State College on Friday night.  Opening face-off is slated for 7:00 pm in Warrendale.

TIGERS TRIP UP TROJANS, 5-2

(12/6/11) Five different Tigers tallied goals as North Allegheny traveled to Erie for a 5-2 win over McDowell on Monday night.  From the start however, it was the Trojans who held the early momentum when Robert Sowieralska scored to put McDowell in front, 1-0, just three minutes into the game.  The Tigers trailed most of the first period until two quick strikes by NA turned the tables.  Joe Griffin scored at 11:01 of the period and Dalton Landman notched a power play goal at 12:55 to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead at the end of one.

Midway through the second period, Zach Morton increased the Tigers lead to 3-1 with a goal that was set up by Connor Cash and Harry Kramer.  McDowell edged back into the game less than a minute later on a tally by Alex Margraf to cut NA's lead to 3-2.   Goals by Matt Fantaski and Cody Black put the game out of reach in the third period for the Tigers.  Black's unassisted goal came short-handed at 9:54 in the third to bring the final score to 5-2.  Jacob Hubert helped in the scoring effort with three assists on the night.

To their credit, McDowell did the most with limited opportunities in the game.  The Trojans managed just 12 shots on net and were heavily outshot and played by the Tigers.  North Allegheny peppered McDowell goalie Tyler Sutula with 40 shots on net.

With the win, North Allegheny improves to 4-2-1 on the season.  McDowell remains in last place in Section 2 with a record of 1-7-0. The Tigers will have the week off before hitting the ice again on Tuesday, December 13 against Shaler at the BladeRunners complex in Warrendale.

NA CRUSHES NORWIN, 5-0

(12/1/11) Led by Jake Hubert's two goal night, the North Allegheny Ice Hockey Team lanced the Norwin Knights, 5-0, on Thursday night.  The Tigers outshot Norwin 33-12 on road ice. Goaltender Matt Goda earned his first shutout of the season and the victory in net.

The game began in a stalemate with neither team tickling the back of the net until early in the second period.  That's when Harry Kramer scored on a feed from Matt Fantaski and the Tigers held a 1-0 lead at 3:26 of the period.  A hooking penalty on Norwin's Christian Slafka gave North Allegheny a power play late in the period and the Tigers took advantage.  Josh King tallied a goal on a setup from Shawn Baird and Joe Griffin with just under three minutes remaining in the period to give NA a 2-0 lead.

Hubert's two goals in the third period buried Norwin and Justin Leonard capped the victory with a goal at 11:20 of the third to bring the final to 5-0, Tigers.  North Allegheny improves to 3-2-1 on the year while Norwin drops to 4-2.  The Tigers are in action again on Monday night at McDowell.

TIGERS BLANKED BY PANTHERS, 2-0

(11/22/11) Just six days after a lopsided win over the Upper St. Clair, North Allegheny failed to score a goal in last night's rematch with the Panthers, falling 2-0.  The physical play spilled over from last week's game, particularly in the early going, with 10 penalties in the first period.  Upper St. Clair's Michael Sweeney finally broke the deadlock in the second period with what proved to be the game winner. The Panthers’ Connor Ackerman was able to score on the Tigers’ empty net with less than two minutes left in the game.

Despite out-shooting the Panthers 27-12, as well as hitting a couple of posts, the Tigers were unable to get a puck past goalie Michael Ambrose.  Just last week, the Tigers were able to dominate the Panthers in a 7-1 rout on North Allegheny’s home ice. The Tigers will face off against the Norwin Knights next Wednesday at Center Ice in Delmont.

TIGERS GET REVENGE AGAINST PANTHERS
WITH 7-1 WIN

(11/15/11) A very motivated North Allegheny team earned a measure of revenge against the squad that knocked them out of the playoffs a year ago with a 7-1 victory over the Upper St. Clair Panthers on Tuesday night.  The Panthers defeated NA in the quarterfinals of the PIHL playoffs last year, but the Tigers erased those memories with a landslide win at the BladeRunners complex in Warrendale.  North Allegheny received two goals apiece from Matt Neurohr, Marty Hubert and Charles Johnson to dominate the Panthers from start to finish.

Johnson opened the scoring early in the game with a tally at 1:30 of the first period to give NA a 1-0 lead.  However, an interference penalty gave the Panthers a power play that they converted into a goal by David Penkrot at the 4:05 mark of the period to tie the score, 1-1.  That was as close as USC would come in this game as the Tigers broke the tie on a goal by Neurohr with 3:08 remaining in the period to put NA back on top, 2-1.  On a nice pass from Cody Black, Johnson added his second goal of the night over a minute later to give NA a 3-1 lead at the first intermission.

North Allegheny used their physical play to continue their dominance over Upper St. Clair in the second period with big checks from Jacob Hubert, Joe Griffin and Harry Kramer.  The Tigers increased their advantage on the scoreboard as well when Hubert scored his second goal of the contest with 2:01 remaining in the period to make it a 4-1 game.  Following the goal, the nature of the game became chippy and the physical play turned into a scrap as three players, two Tigers and one Panther, were given a game misconduct for fighting.  A second Panther was handed a game misconduct for abuse of officials just moments later.  After the officials restored order, the remainder of the game was played cleanly.

North Allegheny continued their offensive barrage on Upper St. Clair in the third period with three more goals as Marty Hubert, Matt Neurohr and Zach Morton all scored to finish off the outmatched Panthers.  With solid play on both ends of the ice and three points on the night, Matt Neurohr was selected as the Wright Automotive Player of the Game by the North Allegheny Sports Network.

In net, USC goalie Michael Ambrose, who entered the game with a 1.50 GAA, stopped only 19 of 26 shots by the Tigers.  In contrast, Matt Goda made 12 saves on 13 shots by the Panthers.  The victory improves the Tigers to 2-1-1 on the young season while USC falls to 1-3-0.  These two teams will face off in a rematch on Monday night at the Ice Castle.  Face off is slated for 9:00 pm.

TONKOVICH BROTHERS, PENALTIES,
TOO MUCH TO OVERCOME FOR NA

(11/7/11) In a fast paced game at the Iceoplex in Southpointe, the Canon-McMillan Big Macs outlasted the North Allegheny Tigers on Monday night, 6-3.  With a hat trick from Anthony Tonkovich, the Big Macs thwarted the Tigers in a back-and-forth game.  Tonkovich’s third goal was an empty netter in the final minutes, which made the margin of victory less indicative of how competitive this game actually was.

The game was filled with penalties; eight apiece on both on sides, and the first power play of the night went to the Tigers just 26 seconds into the game.  Canon-McMillan’s penalty kill answered the call, and immediately following the PK, Anthony Tonkovich got free for a breakaway and beat NA goalie Matt Goda to give the Big Macs a 1-0 lead.  The Tigers wasted little time in tying the game as Joe Griffin banked a shot from a sharp angle off the back of CM goalie Ryan Christian and into the net to knot the score at 1-1.  For Griffin, it was his team best fourth goal of the season.  Then the demons of the Iceoplex came back to haunt the Tigers when Big Macs defenseman Zachary Swink dumped the puck into the NA zone.  With Goda coming out to play the puck, it took a bad, unexpected bounce off the boards and into the Tigers net to give Swink and the Big Macs a 2-1 lead with 10:25 on the clock in the first period.

The NA deficit remained at one goal until early in the second period, with the Tigers on the power play.  Matt Neuhrohr did a great job of thumping a desperate CM penalty kill unit, keeping the puck in the attacking zone and swinging a pass to Harry Kramer who blasted a slap shot past Christian and the Tigers had tied the score at 2-2.  With 9:28 remaining in the period, the Big Macs were on the power play when a strong Nick Harrison slap shot trickled off Goda and into the crease behind him, allowing Austin Tonkovich an easy tap in to put Canon-Mac back ahead, 3-2.  North Allegheny would tie the score yet again just over a minute later when Cody Black accepted a beautiful pass from Charles Johnson and glanced a shot off Christian and into the net to even up the score at 3-3.  With his strong fore checking and defense, Black was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game by the North Allegheny Sports Network.  Before the end of the period, another Canon-McMillan power play opportunity paid handsome dividends for the homestanding Big Macs as Anthony Tonkovich score his second goal of the night at 9:38 to give CM a 4-3 lead heading into the third period.

With 10:53 remaining in the game, Zack McKown found his way past the Tigers defense and narrowly got the puck past Goda to lift Canon-McMillan to a 5-3 advantage.  McKown’s goal, and a series of penalties called against North Allegheny, left the Tigers deflated and unable to find the magic they had in the first two periods.  Anthony Tonkovich’s empty net goal with 1:22 remaining iced a 6-3 victory for Canon-McMillan.  Despite allowing five goals, Goda played well in net for the most part in stopping 22 of 27 shots.

The Tigers fall to 1-1-1 with the loss and are just 1-3 at the Iceoplex over the past four seasons.  The Big Macs remain undefeated with a mark of 3-0-0 and are in first place in Section 1.  North Allegheny hopes to rebound next Tuesday with a playoff rematch with the Upper St. Clair Panthers at BladeRunners in Warrendale.  The game will be carried live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

TIGERS TOPPLE SECTION RIVAL
SENECA VALLEY, 4-2

by Betsy Landman

Behind two goals from junior forward Joe Griffin, the North Allegheny Ice Hockey Team defeated section foe Seneca Valley, 4-2, on Tuesday night in Warrendale.  North Allegheny faced off against their section rival in a fast-paced, exciting match-up that kept the large, rowdy crowd thoroughly entertained.   Less than two minutes into the game, a Griffin wrist shot found the upper right side of the net with assists from sophomore forward Marty Hubert and senior forward Matt Neurohr.  The Tigers successfully killed the first of six NA penalties for the night a couple of minutes later in the first period.  Junior forward Connor Cash tallied a goal late in the first period, with an assist awarded to senior co-captain Josh King, to give NA a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.

Both the Raiders and the Tigers found themselves in the penalty box three times in the second period, and NA’s Griffin was able to capitalize on the power play with his second goal of the game, putting the Tigers up 3-0, with an assist from Cash.  Four minutes later in the period, however, Seneca Valley’s power play was successful as Logan Rose scored, cutting NA’s lead to 3-1.

The momentum of the game didn’t slow down in the third period as the Tigers sought to increase their lead and the Raiders fought desperately to score.  Finally, with less than two minutes left in the game, Tiger senior forward Zach Morton shot the puck into the back of the Raider’s net, increasing NA’s lead to 4-1.  Cash earned his third point on the night with his assist on Morton’s goal.  The game was not over, however, as NA’s King was sent to the penalty box for interference with 39 seconds left in the game.  Seneca Valley responded with a power play goal by Casey Kramer with ten seconds remaining in the contest.  The Tigers outshot the Raiders 29-13, winning the game 4-2.

The Tigers improve to 1-0-1 and will face a tough test next Monday night against the undefeated Canon-McMillan Big Macs at Southpointe's Iceoplex.  The game will be carried live via the internet on the North Allegheny Sports Network.

TIGERS OPEN SEASON WITH 3-3 TIE AGAINST PETERS TOWNSHIP

In a furious final minute of regulation, North Allegheny's Marty Hubert scored with just six seconds remaining to force a 3-3 tie with Peters Township in the Tigers season opener.  Hubert's goal was his second of the night and came just 34 seconds after Peters Township had grabbed a 3-2 lead on a goal by Alex Debolt.  Neither team could tally a goal in overtime.

The exciting finish is an appropriate start to the season for North Allegheny, the top-ranked team in Class AAA.  The Tigers narrowly fell to the state champion Upper St. Clair Panthers in the PIHL quarterfinals last year and are looking to build on that showing with a host of returning starters.  Peters Township, a perennial Class AA powerhouse, has made the jump to Class AAA this season and started their new venture with success by jumping on NA early in the first period.  Less than four minutes into the game, Davan Groom scored the season's first goal at 3:37 of the first period to put the Indians in front, 1-0.

The Tigers tied the game two minutes into the second period when Hubert beat Peters goalie Jesse Borne for his first goal of the night to bring the score to 1-1.  A holding penalty on the Indians Jacob Brown gave NA a power play and the Tigers took full advantage as Joe Griffin scored on a feed from Dalton Landman to put NA on top, 2-1.  Peters would even the score by the end of the period when Groom tallied his second goal of the game at 12:37.  That set the stage for a wild third period, in particular the final minute of the game that saw both teams score and leave the BladeRunners complex in Warrendale with a 3-3 tie.  North Allegheny goalie Matt Goda stopped 16 of 19 shots on goal and Peters net minder Jesse Borne made 23 saves on 26 shots.

North Allegheny’s record currently sits at 0-0-1.  The Tigers will face Seneca Valley next Tuesday night at BladeRunners in Warrendale for the first section game of the year.

TIGERS RANKED #1 IN PG'S
PRESEASON RANKINGS

Coming off a strong 12-6-2 season a year ago, the North Allegheny Ice Hockey Team is ranked number one by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s preseason rankings for the 2011-12 season.  The Tigers campaign last year was cut short by a narrow 4-2 loss to eventual state champion Upper St. Clair in the PIHL quarterfinals.  With senior goaltender Matt Goda returning this season as one of the PG’s players to watch, the Tigers are tough defensively and a fundamentally strong group led by head coach Jim Black.  North Allegheny opens the season at home on October 25 against Peters Township.  The first ice hockey broadcast of the season on the North Allegheny Sports Network is slated for Monday, November 7, when the top-ranked Tigers face the second-ranked Canon-McMillan Big Macs at Southpointe.
