
Baseball gets in win column with 3-2 victory over Mt. Lebanon
North Allegheny traveled to Mt. Lebanon’s Seymour Field to take on the Blue Devils in a WPIAL Championship rematch on Monday afternoon. The Tigers scored early and were able to hang on late to pick up their first win of the season, 3-2, over Mt. Lebanon.
The Tigers got started quickly when in the top of the first inning, Sean O’Donnell walked, JJ Mancuso got hit by a pitch and Nate Persinger walked to load the bases. Nico Varlotta manufactured a run with an RBI ground out to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first inning.
Both pitchers dominated going into the top of the fourth inning when Varlotta got things going with a lead-off single. Nate Surman doubled to left field, scoring courtesy runner Carter Boehm to give NA a 2-0 lead. Christian Simons scored Surman on a single to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.
Mt. Lebanon scored two runs in the sixth to make it interesting but Surman came in and shut the door in the seventh inning to give North Allegheny the 3-2 victory.
Varlotta was dominant on the mound going five innings, allowing two hits and striking out nine batters. Surman picked up the save.
North Allegheny improves to 1-2 overall. Mt. Lebanon falls to 1-5 overall. The Tigers return to action tomorrow when they host Plum at 6 p.m. in another non-section contest.
