Costanzo Takes No-hit Bid Into 7th, NA Tops Allderdice, 6-1

The North Allegheny baseball team visited Allderdice on Tuesday afternoon and earned a 6-1 section triumph in game one of a three-game series. Junior pitcher J.D. Costanzo took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and picked up the victory to improve to 3-1 on the season. The southpaw allowed only one run on one hit with three walks and eight strikeouts.

West Virginia University commit, Spencer Barnett, got the offensive party started with a solo homer in the first inning, his first of the season, for a quick 1-0 lead. The Tigers made it 2-0 in the top of the second when sophomore Augie Maslo scored on an Allerdice error.

To his credit, freshman starter Lukas Stead kept the host Dragons in the game and also pitched into the seventh inning before the Tigers broke the game open. A two-run single by senior Drew Dougherty increased the NA lead to 4-0 lead and junior Jake Ebken added a sacrifice fly RBI for a 5-0 advantage. Junior Owen Schall added an RBI single later in the inning bring the score to 6-0, Tigers.

In the bottom of the seventh, Costanzo’s no-hit bid was broken by the first batter inning, sophomore Landon Blank, with a leadoff double. An out later, Ty Rubenstein’s RBI base hit scored Blank as the Dragons avoided being blanked for the fifth time this season. The Rubenstein single brought the score to its eventual final, 6-1.

Junior reliever Greg Schmidt followed Costanzo in the seventh and retired three batters, including one by strikeout, without allowing a run.

Stead took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) with two walks and six strikeouts. Junior Gabe Engel went 0.2 scoreless in relief for the Dragons.

With the win, North Allegheny improves to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in Section 1-6A, while Allderdice falls to 1-7 overall and 0-7 in the section. The Tigers will host the Dragons in game two on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
