NA Batters Butler, 13-0

Opening the section slate on the road at Pullman Park, the North Allegheny baseball team battered the Butler Golden Tornado on Tuesday, 13-0, in Section 1-6A action. Following an 11-strike out performance last week against State College, junior southpaw J.D. Costanzo was even more impressive against the Tornado. Costanzo completely silenced Butler with six shutout innings, allowing only three hits and two walks, while punching out nine to earn the victory.

J.D. Costanzo blanked Butler through six innings with nine strikeouts to earn the win.

With Butler baffled by Costanzo, the NA lineup provided more than enough run support as eight different players collected hits in the game. Costanzo helped his own cause with a two-hit and three RBI afternoon, including a two-run triple in the first inning. Junior David Posey also tallied three RBI’s, including a two-run double in the sixth inning.

Adding to the avalanche of runs were Brett McSparran, Andrew Dougherty, Spencer Barnett, Augie Maslo and Andrew Hart with one RBI each. Barnett also went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three walks.

Along with Costanzo’s dominance on the mound, sophomore Nicolas Varlotta pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the win. Butler starter Mac Schnur suffered the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.

North Allegheny leaps to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in Section 1-6A, while Butler falls to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the section. The Tigers will host the Golden Tornado in game two of the season series on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
