The North Allegheny baseball team stayed undefeated and secured a series sweep on Saturday afternoon with a 6-1 win over Butler at Pullman Park. The Tigers capitalized on four errors in the middle to late innings to run away from the Golden Tornado.

The contest began as a pitcher’s duel between Penn State University commit, Charles Mau, and Butler sophomore Nolan Stefaniak. With the game scoreless through three innings, the Tigers broke through for the game’s first run in the top of the fourth when Miles Pealer scored on an error to give NA a 1-0 lead. Butler quickly matched the NA run in the bottom of the fourth inning courtesy of a two-out RBI single by Andrew Lucas, knotting the score at 1-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, back-to-back singles by junior Mason Smith and senior Owen Schall set the table for North Allegheny to regain the lead. A pair of Butler errors later in the inning allowed both Smith and Schall to score and the Tigers led, 3-1.

The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Schall drove in a run with an RBI single, Smith scored another on a Butler throwing error and junior Nico Varlotta capped the scoring with an RBI single to bring the score to its eventual final, 6-1.

Charles Mau tossed four effective innings to earn the victory.

Mau earned the win with four innings of work to improve to 1-0 on the season. The southpaw permitted only one unearned run with six strikeouts and three walks. For his efforts, Mau was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

Junior righty Colin Moore, who entered a two-run game in the fifth inning, pitched the final three frames for his first save of the campaign. He punched out three batters, while walking two.

For Butler, Stefaniak suffered the loss and sees his record drop to 1-1. He went 5.1 innings and allowed four runs, only one earned, with three strikeouts and three walks.

North Allegheny maintains an unblemished record with a 6-0 mark overall and 3-0 record in Section 1-6A. Butler falls to 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the section. The Tigers return to action on Monday afternoon with a visit to Allderdice.
