North Allegheny opened section play on Monday afternoon at Pullman Park in Butler, PA. The Tigers trailed going into the seventh inning but were able to rally to beat the Golden Tornado by a score of 3-1. The loss was Butler’s first of the season.

The Golden Tornado got on the board in the bottom of the first on a passed ball and led 1-0 after an inning of play. That is about all the offense Butler could muster as the North Allegheny pitching staff held the Golden Tornado bats at bay the remainder of the game.

North Allegheny threatened in the top of the fifth inning when Augie Maslo walked and Sean O’Donnell doubled with one out but the Tigers couldn’t get a run across. Ben Wilcox threw a scoreless sixth inning and NA began to rally.

In the top of the seventh, Nate Surman led off with a walk, pinch-runner Mason Dratfinsky stole second and scored on a Christian Simons single to tie the game 1-1. O’Donnell put down a squeeze bunt that scored Simons and gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead. Mason Smith grounded into a double play but another run scored to give North Allegheny a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

For the third straight game, Surman came in and shut it down in the seventh for his third save and the Tigers won 3-1.

Nico Varlotta went five innings allowing three hits and one run. He struck out five batters. Wilcox picked up the win.

North Allegheny improves to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in section play. Butler falls to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Section 1-6A. The two teams return to action on Wednesday at North Allegheny with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. This game will be broadcast on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
