NA Edged By Shaler In Non-Section Fray

The North Allegheny baseball team visited Shaler, the Section 3-5A champions, on Wednesday afternoon and fell to the host Titans, 3-2, in a non-section matchup.

Sophomore Luke Jarzsynka’s two-run double in the first inning put Shaler on top 2-0 and the Titans led for the remainder of the contest. The Tigers cut the deficit to 2-1 on an Anthony Varlotta single in the top of the fourth, but the Titans answered immediately in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a double steal that allowed sophomore Joey Ripoli to race home for a 3-1 advantage. North Allegheny closed the gap to 3-2 in the top of the fifth with an RBI single courtesy of junior Owen Schall.

Following the Schall single, Titans reliever Colby Weber finished off the game with two scoreless innings to close out a 3-2 win for Shaler. Weber pitched three total innings out of the bullpen to pick up the save. Starter Derek Leas earned the victory for Shaler with four innings on the bump, allowing only one run with two walks and three strikeouts.

North Allegheny’s David Posey got the starting nod but suffered the loss, permitting three runs (one earned) with two walks and five strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work. Senior Brett McSparran entered in relief and went 1.1 innings scoreless with no walks and three strikeouts.

Following the non-section loss, North Allegheny falls to 12-6 overall. Meanwhile, Shaler improves to 16-4 on the season. The Tigers will host a non-section doubleheader with Fox Chapel and Trinity on Thursday.
