NA rallies to defeat Plum, 7-6

After being delayed 24 hours, the Tigers had to endure another rain delay in the fifth inning in their game against the Plum Mustangs before handing Plum their first loss of the season, rallying for a 7-6 victory at Plum High School on Thursday afternoon.

Plum threw the first punch scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. North Allegheny responded with two runs in the top of the second when Nate Persinger led the inning off with a double, Nico Varlotta got on via a fielder’s choice, before Christian Simons doubled to scored Varlotta and courtesy runner Carter Boehm to cut the deficit to 3-2.

The Mustangs scored two of their own in the bottom of the second to make the score 5-2. NA responded once again in the top of the third inning when Miles Pealer walked, JJ Mancuso tripled scoring Pealer and Persinger singled to score Mancuso and it was a one-run game again at 5-4.

Plum would tack on one more run in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 6-4 before North Allegheny exploded in the fifth inning. Mancuso walked to lead off the inning, Persinger was hit by a pitch and Varlotta hit an RBI single to make the score 6-5. Grant Husky got the squeeze bunt down to tie the game 6-6 and Carson Burns scored on an error to make the score 7-6.

Surman picked up his second save in as many games shutting the game down in the seventh and North Allegheny came away with the 7-6 win. Jackson Walsh picked up the win going three innings of relief allowing just one run.

North Allegheny improves to 2-2 overall. Plum falls to 6-1 overall. The Tigers return to action tomorrow when they host Penn-Trafford at 7 p.m. This game will be broadcast on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
