NA Sinks Seneca Valley In Game One, 5-2
On the strength of a six-inning and nine-strikeout performance from senior pitcher David Posey, the North Allegheny baseball team earned a 5-2 home win over the Seneca Valley Raiders on Monday night. The victory ended a mini two-game skid and kept the Tigers undefeated in Section 1-6A with a 7-0 mark. Posey, who also added an RBI offensively, was tabbed the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.
In the first inning, senior Matthew Parreaguirre reached base on a walk and advanced to third on a base hit by senior Owen Schall. Posey followed with a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield to score Parreaguirre and NA led, 1-0.
Seneca Valley tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the third inning when junior Aeden Fowler raced home on a wild pitch.
The deadlock was broken in the bottom of the fifth inning when a perfect safety squeeze bunt by junior Mason Smith resulted in an RBI single, scoring Nico Varlotta from third base, for a 2-1 lead. Schall, who went 2-for-2 with a walk, delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single to score freshman J.J. Mancuso and Smith, and the Tigers advanced the lead to 4-1.
The Raiders trimmed the deficit to 4-2 in the top of the sixth thanks to an RBI single by Tyler McNany, but the Tigers answered back immediately in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single courtesy of senior Andrew Dixon for a 5-2 advantage.
Senior southpaw Cole Suba checked in for the seventh inning out of the bullpen and tossed a scoreless frame for his second save of the season. Posey improved to 3-0 with the win.
For Seneca Valley, Old Dominion commit, Owen Yarussi, worked four strong innings and allowed only one run with nine strikeouts and two walks. Fowler suffered the loss, permitting four runs in two innings of relief.
With the win, North Allegheny improves to 10-2 overall and 7-0 in the section. Seneca Valley falls to 6-5-1 overall and 3-4 in the section. The Tigers and Raiders will meet in Harmony, PA, on Tuesday for game two of the three-game series.
