Seven-Run 7th Inning Leads NA Past Butler, 12-4

The North Allegheny baseball team ran its winning streak to five in a row on Tuesday night with a 12-4 triumph at Butler in game two of a three game set at Pullman Park. After pounding out eight runs in game one of the series, NA blistered Butler pitching again to the tune of 12 hits and put the game away with a seven-run seventh inning. Senior David Posey paced the lineup, going 2-for-4 with four RBI’s. Senior Matthew Parreaguirre was another offensive catalyst and reached base four times, going 3-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored.

Trailing 1-0 after two innings, a sacrifice fly by freshman J.J. Mancuso knotted the score in the top of the third and the Tigers jumped ahead later in the inning on a two-run single by Posey for a 3-1 lead.

Butler capitalized on an NA error in the bottom of the third inning and scored twice to tie the game at 3-3. The deadlock stood until the Tigers tallied the go-ahead run on an RBI groundout by Posey in the top of fifth.

Up 4-3, the Tigers added on to the advantage in the top of the sixth thanks to an RBI double down the left field line by Parreaguirre for a 5-3 lead.

Matthew Parreaguirre scores on a wild pitch in the seventh inning.

The night before, the pesky Golden Tornado scratched back and threatened to tie or take the lead in the late innings. There would be no such threat in this contest as NA buried Butler under a seven-run avalanche in the top of the seventh. The big inning was sparked by an RBI double by Owen Schall and continued with an RBI single by Posey and a two-run triple by Augie Maslo for a 9-3 lead. The Tigers added on when Maslo scored on a passed ball, Parreaguirre scored on a wild pitch and junior Mason Smith drove in the 12th run on an RBI groundout. Butler added a meaningless run in the bottom of the seventh to bring the final score to 12-4, North Allegheny.

Senior Greg Schmidt got the starting nod and went 5.1 innings for the victory. The Mercyhurst University commit allowed only three unearned runs five strikeouts and five walks. Senior Cole Suba entered a two-run ballgame in the bottom of the sixth and went the final 1.2 innings for his first save of the season. Suba, a Penn State-Altoona commit, permitted one run with no walks and three strikeouts.

For Butler, junior Tanner Pry took the loss in six innings of work. The southpaw allowed seven runs, six earned, with three walks and no strikeouts. Noah Collins pitched the seventh and served up five runs, three earned, with two walks and one strikeout.

North Allegheny improves to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in Section 1-6A, while Butler falls to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the section. The Tigers will try for the three-game sweep on Thursday when NA hosts Butler in game three of the series. The game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
