Tigers Rally For Walk-Off Win On Alex Mesaros’ Two-Run Single

Posted on:

Sophomore Alex Mesaros’ two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted North Allegheny to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Norwin Knights on Monday afternoon.  The Tigers trailed 1-0 most of the game and managed just one hit against Norwin starter John Driggers through six innings.  However, a leadoff walk by Driggers to Daniel McCauley helped set the table for an NA comeback in the bottom of the seventh.

After McCauley’s walk, junior Nick Amendola entered in relief for the Knights and immediately surrendered a double to Blake Young to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Trying to wiggle out of the jam, Amendola intentionally walked Chris Vrana to load the bases but the Tigers wasted little time in taking advantage of the situation as Mesaros promptly singled home McCauley and Young to send North Allegheny to a 2-1 non-section win.

For Norwin, Diggers pitched well but was treated unkind with a no-decision.  Amendola took the loss.  North Allegheny starter Nick Gross hurled three innings and allowed just one unearned run.  Sophomore Bobby Brown (1-0) pitched four scoreless innings of relief and earned the victory.

North Allegheny improves to 3-1 overall with the win.  Norwin drops to 1-1 on the young season.  The Tigers are scheduled to visit Fox Chapel Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 pm.
