FOR SECTION VICTORY

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

After knocking off top-ranked Mt. Lebanon on Monday night, the Lady Tigers continued their winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Butler at the Senior High gym on Tuesday night.  Once again, good play at the net by senior Michele Osterrieder, junior Maria Nolan, and sophomore Jackie Lang helped NA to the victory.  Junior DS Alyssa Vukson served five aces as NA won game one, 25-11, before taking the next two games, 25-20, and 26-24.

The Lady Tigers were in control in game one from the outset.  Kills by Lang, Nolan, and Osterrieder, along with a service ace by Lang, led NA to an early 9-2 advantage.  After a tip by Samantha Harris made it 9-3, the Lady Tigers went on a 12-2 run.  Vukson's five aces were in a run of seven straight points served by the NA junior.  With NA on top, 21-5, Butler outscored the Lady Tigers, 6-4, down the stretch but it was not enough.  Senior MB Christy Parks put the finishing touch on a game one victory with a strong hit off the Butler blockers as NA won by a 25-11 count.

Butler came alive in game two and led for much of the game.  After a kill by junior MB Laura Sudo tied the game at 3-3, Butler scored two points on a 2-hand push by Harris and an NA hitting error.  A tip by Parks and a kill by senior opposite Sydney Schwab put the Lady Tigers back on top, 7-6.  Good hitting by senior MH Amy Achesinski and sophomore Becky Smith led a Butler run that put the Tornado back on top, 15-10.  NA then rallied with Nolan leading the way.  The NA junior MB scored five points to put the Lady Tigers in command with a 24-20 lead.  A Butler hitting error ended game two with NA picking up a 25-20 victory.

In the third and final game, the Lady Tigers took an early lead.  An ace by Lang, another by senior setter Allyson Hodnik, along with kills by Lang and Osterrieder, put NA on top 11-6.  Senior Maureen Sharick came in to serve another ace and two Butler service errors made it 13-7.  After an Osterrider kill pushed the margin to 15-10, the Tornado came back  to cut the lead to 16-14 on a block by Harris.  Kills by Banks and Osterrieder pushed the lead back to 18-14, but Butler was not finished.  The Tornado finally tied the score at 21-21 on an NA hitting error.  The teams exchanged points down the stretch before Nolan came in to record two straight kills and give NA a 26-24 win in game three.  The Lady Tigers won the match, three games to none.

It was a good performance at times for the Lady Tigers after the big victory over Lebo.  It marked the first match for NA after being voted as the #1 team in Class AAA by the coaches' poll.  For her efforts at the net, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Maria Nolan as the Player of the Match.

With the win, the NA section record improved to 2-0 and the overall mark to 4-0.  The Lady Tigers will travel to New Castle tomorrow night for a section match against the Red Hurricanes.  Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS KNOCK OFF #1 MT. LEBANON, 3-2

Coach Dan Schall's Lady Tigers defeated #1 ranked Mt. Lebanon, 3-2, in an exciting match at the Senior High gym on Monday night.  After NA won the first game, 25-18, Lebo came back to win the next two, 25-23 and 25-22.  The Lady Tigers rallied, however, to win game four, 26-24.  In the fifth and final game, NA prevailed, 15-9.

The Lady Tigers once again were led by good play at the net.  Senior OH Michele Osterrieder had 14 kills, sophomore Jackie Lang 13, and junior Maria Nolan 11.  Senior setter Allyson Hodnik was on target again with 42 assists.  According to Coach Schall, "Sydney Schwab's steady play, I felt, was critical.  Mo Sharick gave us a defensive lift and had some great passes in some critical end of game situations."  On the defensive end, Osteriedder had 15 digs with senior Marisa Posteraro recording 11.

It was a big win for NA in the early season.  Coach Schall said, " This was a great match in which our kids were tested on every point.  We had great performances from a number of people."  Thanks to two wins over Lebo at the Shaler Tournament on Saturday, the Lady Tigers are now ranked #1 in the latest Coaches' Poll.  The win on Monday night certainly will solidify that ranking.

The win improved the overall NA record to 3-0.  The Lady Tigers will host Butler tonight in a section match at the Senior High gym.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the match LIVE on the internet with the pre-game show set for 6:50 pm.  Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS FALL TO GREENSBURG SALEM IN FINAL OF SHALER INVITATIONAL

The Lady Tigers advanced to the final of the Shaler Invitational Tournament on Saturday but were defeated in the championship, two games to one, by Greensburg Salem.  In the first game, the Lady Tigers were victorious, 25-11.  The Lions came back to win game two, 27-25, before taking the third and final game, 15-12.  It was a rematch of last year's WPIAL tournament match that the Lions also won, 3-2.

The tournament  was comprised of 28 teams, including some of the top teams in Pennsylvania.  In preliminary pool play, NA and Baldwin qualified for Pool B.  The Tigers beat Norwin, 2-1, and Baldwin, 3-0.  In Pool B, only the winner advanced to the semifinals.  NA knocked off Mt. Lebanon, the #1 ranked team in the WPIAL, 25-22 and 25-23, Susquehannock (District 3, 2005 PIAA quarterfinalist), 25-20 and 25-21, and split with Penn-Trafford, 25-19 and 18-25.  NA finished at 5-1 to advance to the semis.  In the semifinals, NA knocked off Baldwin, 15-10, to advance to the championship.

According to Head Coach Dan Schall, "This was the best day of volleyball that this team has experienced.  The competition was outstanding in the tournament; there was not an easy game all day."  For NA, sophomore Jackie Lang led the way with 45 kills with senior OH Michele Osterrieder close behind with 44.  Senior Christy Parks and junior Maria Nolan played excellent in the middle throughout, according to Coach Schall.  "The strength of this team---the fact that everyone is committed to fulfilling her role---showed throughout the day", said Schall.

The Lady Tigers will host Mt. Lebanon tomorrow night before getting back into section play against Butler on Tuesday.  Both matches are scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Senior High gym.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there on Tuesday to broadcast the match LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:50 pm.

LADY TIGERS BLANK HAMPTON, 3-0,
IN SECTION OPENER

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

Coach Dan Schall's Lady Tigers opened section play on a successful note with a 3-0 victory at Hampton on Thursday night.  Strong play at the net by senior Michele Osterrieder, junior Maria Nolan and sophomore Jackie Lang was too much for the Hampton front line.  Senior setter Allyson Hodnik was on target for most of the evening in addition to serving for key points for NA.

The Tigers jumped off to a quick 11-0 lead in game one and were never tested.  After a Hampton hitting error, Hodnik served 10 straight points with most of the scoring coming from sophomore Gretta Freyermuth, senior Sydney Schwab, and Osterrieder.  After a service error by the Talbots, NA built the lead to 14-2.  Schwab, Lang and Osterrieder all had kills as the lead ballooned to 21-6.  Freyermuth put the Talbots away with a blast down the middle as NA easily won game one, 25-8.

Hampton came back in game two to take a 5-1 early lead behind the hitting of senior Rachel Bender.  NA rallied, however, to score the next seven points to take control of the game.  Junior Caitlin Decker scored on a cross-court kill and served an ace during the run.  A service ace by Lang and another kill by Osterrieder pushed the margin to 11-7.  With NA ahead, 14-9, junior Laura Sudo and Lang scored kills and Osterrieder served another ace as the the Lady Tigers increased the margin to 18-9.  Senior MH Rae Ivory kept Hampton alive with a block and a kill, and senior Kate Martucci served an ace as the Talbots rallied to cut the margin to 20-17.  A left -handed tip by Hodnik stopped the run, and Osterrieder's kill regained the momentum for NA.  Junior Jackie Fitzgerald served the last three points as the Lady Tigers went on to a 25-18 victory in the second game.

In game three, Hampton again jumped off to an early lead.  Strong hitting by senior Kirsten McKenna and Bender put the Talbots on top, 5-0.  After a dink by Schwab cut the lead to 7-2, senior MH Alex Fashion scored off the NA blockers and served two points as the Hampton advantage went to 10-2.  NA regrouped behind kills by Osterrieder and Nolan to cut the margin to 12-7, but kills by Ivory and Fashion made it a 15-8 Hampton lead.  The Lady Tigers rallied, however, to put together a 15-3 run and take a 23-18 lead.  During the run, kills by Lang, two service aces by Schwab, and a number of Hampton hitting errors put NA back on top.  A service ace by Lang ended the game and the match as the Lady Tigers won the third game, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.

It was a good performance by the Lady Tigers against a Hampton team that played in Class AA last year.  Hampton had defeated North Hills, 3-0, in their first section match but could not stay with NA on Thursday night.  Coach Schall got good performances from a number of players, but the North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior setter Allyson Hodnik as the Player of the Match.

With the win, the Lady Tigers improved their overall record to 2-0, 1-0 in section.  NA will travel to Shaler tomorrow for the Shaler Invitational.  Matches will get under at 9:00 am.
