GIRLS' TENNIS MATCH SUMMARIES WHELAN WINS SECTION SINGLES TITLE Sophomore Kelly Whelan defeated Olivia Heim of Pine-Richland, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2, at the Senior High courts on Thursday afternoon to win the Section 2 Singles Championship. Whelan downed Michelle Flynn of Mars, 10-0, in the first round, knocked off Morgan Johnstonbaugh of Hampton, 10-1, in the quarterfinals, and Taylor Perz of Pine-Richland, 6-1, 6-2, in the semifinals on her way to the championship match. Junior Stephanie Smyers advanced to the semifinals before losing to Heim, 6-4, 6-1. In the first round, Smyers downed Katy Andrascik of Mars, 10-0, and then beat Carolyn Sheffer of Butler, 10-3 in the quarters. In the consolation final, Perz defeated Smyers, 6-4, 7-6. The Lady Tiger team will be back in action again on Monday when they travel to Mars for a 3:30 section match. WPIAL SECTION

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * JV TEAM WINS ELEVENTH STRAIGHT WITHOUT A LOSS The JV team remained unbeaten with a 3-2 victory at Shady Side Academy on Friday afternoon. JV MATCH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * LADY TIGERS SWEEP SENECA VALLEY AGAIN, 5-0 For the second time in two days, the Lady Tigers shut out Seneca Valley, 5-0. Playing at the SV courts, the NA singles players led the way with sophomore Kelly Whelan, junior Stephanie Smyers and junior Amanda Maiello picking up straight set victories. In doubles play, it was senior Jen Larimore and freshman Kayla Becich at #1 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Caitlin DeLeo and Michelle Tranter. At the #2 doubles position, sophomore Blair Brown and senior Cherry Bharati coming through with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the Raider team of Fronzaglio and Krohe. The win brought the NA section record to 9-1, the overall mark to 11-1. The section singles tournament will be held today and tomorrow at the Senior High courts. Action is slated to get underway at 12:30 pm today. JV UPDATE: The JV team defeated Seneca Valley, 5-0, to remain undefeated and improve their record to 10-0. MATCH SUMMARY

Once again, the singles players did not lose a game as sophomore Kelly Whelan, senior Jen Larimore, and junior Stephanie Smyers all won in straight sets by 6-0, 6-0 scores. In doubles play, the #1 team of junior Amanda Maiello and sophomore Blair Brown also pitched a shutout at Alexia Fronzaglio and Caitlin DeLeo in a straight set victory. At #2 doubles, freshman Kayla Becich teamed up with senior Laura Amster to win a 6-2, 6-0 victory over the #2 Seneca Valley team. With the win, NA improved to 8-1 in section play, 9-2 overall. Junior Stephanie Smyers, junior Amanda Maiello, and senior co-captain Laura Amster won in straight sets in singles play to pace the NA victory. In doubles play, seniors Jen Larimore and Lisa Gorski teamed up at #1 to defeat Peggy and Jenna Kanterman. At #2 doubles, it was freshman Kayla Becich and sophomore Blair Brown combining for the straight set 6-0, 6-0 victories. With the win, the Lady Tigers section record went to 7-1, the overall mark to 9-1. NA will host Seneca Valley this afternoon in a 3:30 pm section match at the Senior High courts. MATCH SUMMARY

Sophomore Kelly Whelan, junior Stephanie Smyers, and junior Amanda Maiello all won in straight sets to pace NA to the win. In doubles play, the #2 team of seniors Laura Amster and Lisa Gorski took a 6-4, 6-0 win over the team of Schmidt and Sherred of Hampton. With the win, NA improved their section record to 6-1, the overall mark to 8-1. The Lady Tigers will host Knoch on Monday afternoon with match time set for 3:30 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * NORTH HILLS FALLS TO LADY TIGERS, 5-0 Rival North Hills was no match for the Lady Tigers on the Senior High courts on Wednesday afternoon as NA shut out the Indians, 5-0. Sophomore Kelly Whelan led the way with a straight set victory at #1 singles. Junior Stephanie Smyers took a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Emily Winkler at #2 while junior Amanda Maiello downed Abby Derby, 6-0, 6-0 at the #3 position. In doubles play, both teams won straight set victories of the Indians top two teams. With the win, the NA section record went to 5-1, the overall mark to 7-1. The Lady Tigers will travel to Hampton this afternoon for a 3:30 pm section match. JV UPDATE: The JV squad remained unbeaten with a 5-0 victory at North Hills on Wednesday afternoon. The NA singles players swept the Knights as sophomore Kelly Whelan, junior Stephanie Smyers, and junior Amanda Maiello were all victorious by 6-0, 6-0 scores. The doubles teams also won in straight sets with the #1 team of freshman Kayla Becich and sophomore Blair Brown and the #2 team of seniors Lisa Gorski and Laura Amster having little trouble in winning their matches. WINNING The Pine-Richland Rams won both doubles matches on their way to a 3-2 victory over the Lady Tigers at the Pine-Richland courts on Monday afternoon. Sophomore Kelly Whelan and junior Stephanie Smyers won their singles matches for NA. Whelan downed Olivia Heim, 6-2, 3-6, and 6-2 while Smyers was victorious over Daniella Osio by scores of 6-0 and 6-4. With the loss, the NA section record dropped to 3-1, the overall mark to 5-1. The Lady Tigers will travel to Knoch this afternoon for a 3:30 pm section match. The doubles teams lead the way as the lost only three total games in winning their matches in straight sets. At #1 doubles, sophomore Blair Brown and senior Laura Amster downed Morgan Mechtenburg and Kelsey Barner, 6-1, 6-1 while the #2 team of seniors Cherry Bharati and Lisa Gorski were victorious by scores of 6-1 and 6-0 over Michele Ronne and Rachel Fedichen. In singles play, junior Stephanie Smyers won at #1, junior Amanda Maiello at #2, and freshman Kayla Becich at #3 all won in straight sets. With the win, the overall NA record improved to 5-0. Junior Jen Larimore need three sets to defeat Madison Kerr in the #2 singles match. In doubles play, junior Amanda Maiello teamed up with freshman Kayla Becich to defeat Rachel Wilson and Courtney Gallagher in the #1 doubles match, 6-1 and 6-3. NA had little trouble with the Planets losing only four games the entire match. In singles play, sophomore Kelly Whelan and senior Jen Larimore both won in straight sets while the #1 doubles team of junior Amanda Maiello and sophomore Blair Brown also were victorious in straight sets and The win was the second straight in section play without a loss. The overall NA record improved to 3-0 with the victory. The Lady Tigers will travel to Butler tomorrow afternoon for a 3:30 pm section match. The match will be made up later in the season. The JV team did get their match in at Seneca Valley and came home with a 5-0 victory. JV MATCH

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * LADY TIGERS WIN FIRST TWO MATCHES The Lady Tigers are in the middle of a busy week of action as play begins in the 2008 season. NA defeated Hampton, 5-0, on Monday in the season and section opener. Leading the way were sophomore Kelly Whelan, senior Jen Larimore and junior Stephanie Smyers who swept the singles matches. In doubles play, the team of junior Amanda Maiello and freshman Kayla Becich took the #1 doubles match, 6-4 and 6-4, while the #2 team of sophomore Blair Brown and senior Lisa Gorski also won in straight sets. On Tuesday afternoon at the Senior High courts, the Lady Tigers shut out Hempfield, 5-0, Once again, the NA singles players were dominant, losing only two games in winning the three sets. Whelan at #1, Larimore at #2, and Smyers at #3 led the Lady Tigers with easy wins. In doubles play, the #1 team of Maiello and Brown won by scores of 6-1 and 6-1 while at #2, Becich teamed up with senior co-captain Laura Amster to win in straight sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-2. With the wins, the Lady Tigers enter today's match at Knoch with a record of 2-0. Match time today is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
