SHALER ENDS TIGER SEASON

by Dom Gliozzi

The NA Varsity I In-line hockey team completed its season with a 6-1 loss to Shaler in the first round of the PIRHL playoffs on Saturday at BladeRunners in Harmarville.  The lone Tiger goal came from senior defenseman Ben Sardon, as the team played with a number of call-ups due to a scheduling conflict.  The NA Athletic Department salutes the seniors who have offered their talents and effort in their seven years of participation in the North Allegheny In-line program.  Upon graduation, defenseman Ben Sardon will be joining the Air Force Reserves.  Forward Dan Leibhart will attend Penn State-Behrend while forward Nick Schubel will attend WVU or Penn State (main).  Goalie Austin Naylor will attend Slippery Rock University and defenseman Michael Gliozzi will enroll at the University of Pittsburgh.  Both Naylor and Gliozzi plan to extend their in-line careers by participating at the club level at SRU and Pitt.  Congratulations seniors!

JV TEAM WINS SECTION AND QUALIFIES FOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

by Ann Moss

The JV I inline hockey team finished the regular season in first place and has been invited to the State Championships to be held in Philadelphia the weekend of April 9 and 10.  The Tigers, coached by Jim Martin and Jeff Kuhn, ended the season with a final record of 12-3-1.  Troy Martin and Karl Renner led the league in individual points with 49 and 37 respectively.  Nick Moss, Dillon Naylor and Tyler Ware also finished in the top category of individual points earned.

The defensive matching of Jack Hopkins with Carl Hayson and Tyler Brown with Dillon Naylor or Troy Martin elevated the team to a +/- ration of +39 overall.  Tyler Kuhn had an impressive record of 12-2 in goal.  The unselfish efforts of all members of this team contributed to their success so far this season.  The sky is the limit!

This is NA's first return to states since the Varsity I teams won back to back state titles in 2005 and 2006.  Great job and good luck at states.

SHALER STOPS TIGERS, 4-1, IN
REGULAR SEASON FINALE

by Dom Gliozzi

Photo Gallery

The Varsity I In-Line hockey team wrapped up its regular season schedule with a 4-1 loss to first place Shaler on Saturday afternoon at BladeRunners in Harmarville.  NA’s goal came in the second period off the stick of senior forward Dan Leibhart, assisted by junior defenseman Lloyd Carmack.  The Tigers outshot the Titans 22-21 but could not capitalize on their scoring chances.   North Allegheny and Shaler will square off again next weekend in round one of the PIRHL playoffs, with date, time and location to be determined.

After a two week hiatus due to last weekend’s snow storm, the first period saw both teams cautiously moving the puck while trying to assess each side’s tendencies.  As both squads got their skating legs going, Shaler was awarded the first power play at 5:05 but could muster one harmless shot.  Still playing a cagey style, each team patiently moved into each other’s offensive zone with short passes to set up their shots.  Shaler’s patience was rewarded with an even strength goal at 13:29 to give them a 1-0 lead which they carried to the end of the first period.  The Titans outshot the Tigers eight to five in the period.

Both teams shook off the guarded approach in the second period and picked up numerous scoring opportunities as the skating pace became much faster.  Shaler cashed in again at 2:12 (even strength) to open a 2-0 lead.  NA fired back with a volley of shots that the Shaler goaltender stopped while relinquishing many rebounds that the Tigers couldn’t deposit behind him.   The Tiger attack paid off, however, at 11:32 when senior forward Dan Leibhart stuffed a backhander over the right pad of the Shaler goalie off a pass by junior defenseman Lloyd Carmack.  The even strength marker closed gap to one goal.  The tide of the game may have changed shortly after this goal when the Tigers unleashed five consecutive shots in quick succession (two by Leibhart) from close range that the Shaler goalie turned away.  Rather than knotting the game up, the Tigers entered the second intermission still down 2-1.  NA outshot Shaler eight to six in this period.

Shaler opened the third period with another even strength goal at 5:42 to extend their lead to 3-1.   Two consecutive power play opportunities opened the door for NA in the middle of the period, at 7:43 and 9:54, but five shots and strong pressure proved fruitless.  Shaler was awarded a power play at 11:57 and cashed in at 13:10 to wrap up the scoring for the 4-1 final.  NA outshot Shaler nine to seven in the third period.  Coach Dave Gordon assessed the game as, “One of our best all around games of the season.  The effort was great; we just fell a little bit short in the offensive zone.   This team can play with the top tier teams in the V1 division.”  The Tigers get the opportunity for a rematch with the Titans in the first phase of PIRHL playoff battles the weekend of February 20-21.

TIGERS SUCCUMB TO WEST ALLEGHENY, 4-1

by Dom Gliozzi

Despite playing on an even basis all game long, the Tigers Varsity I In-line Hockey squad lost to West Allegheny, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at the RMU-Island Sports Center.  The spirited contest saw each team record 28 official shots, while the NA tigers recorded many more scoring opportunities that found traffic in front of the net or that rang off the goal posts with regularity.  The lone Tiger tally came from Corey Lamagna, off assists by Dan Leibhart and Michael Gliozzi.

The first period was only one minute and four seconds old when NA was awarded the first power play of the game.  Despite strong offensive pressure and two shots, the Tigers failed to score.  At 4:11, a West Allegheny forward deposited a wrist shot from the slot, directly between the two faceoff circles, into the upper right corner of the net to take the 1-0 lead.  From the 5:11 mark of the period to the very end of the first stanza, both teams traded power plays and 3 on 3 opportunities on two separate occasions, but both squads managed to stave off each other’s offensive threats.  The period ended with West Allegheny nursing the 1-0 lead.  The Tigers outshot West Allegheny 8-7.

Wrapping up another 3 on 3 and brief power play, West Allegheny found itself on its heels early in the second.  After recording four quick shots that were turned away, the Tigers hit pay dirt on an outstanding play.  Senior forward Dan Leibhart won a faceoff in the defensive zone, drawing the puck back to senior defenseman Michael Gliozzi, who moved it senior defenseman Ben Sardon behind the net for the start of the breakout.   Sardon returned the puck to Gliozzi, sliding up the right boards, who then spotted Leibhart in the neutral zone.  Leibhart took the crisp pass, glided through the right face-off circle, froze the West Allegheny goalie and then slid the puck to an open forward, junior Corey Lamagna, who was positioned to the left of the net.  Lamagna deposited the puck behind the West Allegheny goalie at 6:51, with an official assist by Leibhart, to tie the game 1-1.  NA continued the pressure and dominated through the middle of the period with multiple shots that bounced off bodies in front of the net, rang off goal posts and were otherwise smothered by the West Allegheny goalie.  West Allegheny then turned on the power switch, unleashing a flurry of shots that turned the tide.  After making three spectacular saves on successive point blank West Allegheny shots, senior goalie Austin Naylor saw a puck poked just inside his left pad at the 10:05 mark to give West Allegheny the lead back, 2-1.  This even strength goal was followed by another even strength tally at 12:52, after a rare NA turnover, giving West Allegheny a 3-1 lead after two periods.  West Allegheny recorded 14 shots to the Tigers’ 10.

North Allegheny set a furious pace in the third period and dominated play, but to no avail.  By the middle of the period, the Tigers had outshot West Allegheny 7-0, but no more goals were to be had.  After a West Allegheny power play was killed, at the 12:14 mark Coach Dave Gordon called a time out at 13:45.  Goalie Naylor was pulled for an extra attacker, but the pressure was killed off by West Allegheny, eventually recording an empty net clincher at 14:50 to make the final tally 4-1.  North Allegheny outshot West Allegheny 10-7 in the third.

An outstanding, two-way effort was recorded by the all the Tigers in this contest.  Notable performances were turned in by junior defenseman Andrew Gordon, sophomore defenseman Anthony Guntrum and call-up sophomore forwards, Zach Morton and David Lamagna.  The Tigers travel to BladeRunners in Harmarville next Saturday to take on the first place Shaler Area Titans in the final PIRHL regular season game.

The Tigers fell to Seneca Valley, 8-0, in a PIRHL contest on Sunday afternoon at the RMU-Island Sports Center.  The Tigers were outshot, 29-17, and it marked the first time this season that NA was shut out.  The Raiders dominated the contest with three goals in the first period, two in the second, and three more in the final stanza.

The loss dropped the NA overall record to 1-11-1 on the season.  The Tigers will take on West Allegheny next Sunday at the RMU-Island Sports Center with game time scheduled for 12:45 pm.

SHALER OVERWHELMS TIGERS, 8-1

At BladeRunners in Harmarville, the Tigers took the early 1-0 lead in the first period against Shaler off a Dan Leibhart goal, only to see the Titans run off eight unanswered goals, four of them on power plays, to defeat NA 8-1 Sunday afternoon in PIRHL action..

After gaining a territorial advantage early in the first period, senior forward Dan Leibhart turned in two outstanding sequences that gave the Tigers the first goal. After using his chest to block a Shaler shot in the defensive zone, Leibhart scooped up the puck, moved into the offensive zone, and set up a quick give and go with junior forward Lloyd Carmack.  With the puck nestled back on his stick, Leibhart buried a shot under the glove of the Shaler goalie at 3:59 (even strength) for the 1-0 Tiger lead.  It was the only Tiger goal of the day.  Shaler followed with 4 unanswered goals in the first period, 3 in the 2nd period and 1 in the third period, outshooting the Tigers 23-14 in the process.

With the loss, the NA record in PIRHL play fell to 1-10-1 on the season.  The Tigers take on Seneca Valley next Sunday, January 24, at 3:45 at the RMU Island Sports Center.

TIGERS FALL TO BALDWIN IN 8-5 SHOOTOUT

 by Dom Gliozzi

Despite two goals apiece from senior forward Dan Leibhart and junior forward Corey Lamagna, the Tigers fell 8-5 to Baldwin Sunday afternoon in Varsity I in-line hockey action at RMU Island Sports Center.  The wide open contest saw 56 shots on goal and numerous momentum swings, with the Tigers controlling play for many stretches but falling short on the final scoreboard.

In the first period, both squads opened up with all sticks firing.  The Tigers were awarded a power play at 6:41 and then cashed in at 7:13 as senior defenseman Ben Sardon (unassisted) wristed a low shot under the glove of the Baldwin goalie to present the Tigers a 1-0 lead.  Fueled by that goal, the Highlanders then ran off three consecutive even strength goals at 7:49, 8:27 and 9:19 to stun the Tigers 3-1.  They put one more into the Tiger cage later in the period at 12:06, also an even strength tally.  NA went on a power play at 14:50 but could not connect, ending the period down 4-1.  Both teams placed 11 shots on net during the period.

The second period was just as furious as the first.  Baldwin went on a power play at 1:22 and was stopped on a breakaway due to a spectacular save from senior Goalie Austin Naylor.  This proved instrumental, as junior forward Corey Lamagna scored shorthanded on the Baldwin man advantage at 2:18 (unassisted) to cut the lead to 4-2.  Just as the power play expired, Baldwin tallied again at 3:41 to regain the 3 goal advantage, 5-2.  At 9:26, the Tigers answered again as senior forward Dan Leibhart, assisted by Sardon, pumped one in (even strength) past the Highlander goalie to shave the Baldwin margin to 5-3.  With Baldwin on their heels, Lamagna recorded his second goal of the game (even strength and unassisted) at 11:37 from the high slot, cutting the lead down to one goal, 5-4.  Baldwin responded by closing out the period with an even strength goal at 14:16 to take a 6-4 lead after two.  Baldwin outshot NA 14-7 in the period, but the Tigers recorded three goals to the Highlanders’ two.

Baldwin started the third period with a power play and could muster only one shot.  At 6:23, Leibhart took a lead pass from senior defenseman Michael Gliozzi off the left boards, and cutting across the blue line unleashed a wrist shot that sailed past the Baldwin goalie.  Leibhart’s second of the game (even strength) cut the margin to one, and all the momentum was on the Tigers’ bench.  Unfortunately, Baldwin responded with a breakaway (even strength goal) shortly after, at 7:18, putting them up 7-5.  The Highlanders finished the scoring with a 3 on 3 goal at 14:27 to post a final score of 8-5.

Baldwin outshot the Tigers 8-5 for the period and 33-23 for the game.  The valiant effort by the Tigers, especially after trailing 4-1, showed their resilience and talent despite the official PIRHL standings.  Coach Dave Gordon called the game “A Tale of Two Cities,” while indicating that the offensive output was the best of the season and would bode well for the playoffs next month.  The Tigers travel to Bladerunners in Harmarville next Sunday, January 17, to take on the Shaler Area Titans at 2 PM.

TIGERS FALL TO PINE-RICHLAND, 4-1

by Dom Gliozzi

In a match-up of similar styles, Pine-Richland outlasted the Tigers 4-1 in Varsity I In-line hockey Sunday afternoon at the RMU Island Sports Center. Despite out shooting the Rams 20-17 on the day, the Tigers could not convert their scoring chances while the Rams scored goals late in each of the first two periods.  A furious Tiger charge in the third period, including a Dan Leibhart goal, was eventually thwarted and the Rams tacked on two more tallies for the 4-1 final decision.

The first period saw both teams cautiously move the puck into each other’s offensive zone without much action or activity around the nets.  Pine-Richland embarked on a power play at 5:57 but could do no damage. The Tigers went on their own man advantage at 12:07, and despite two scoring opportunities could not register a shot.  Pine-Richland then converted on a 2 on 1 rush, sliding a shot from the right face-off circle (even strength) at 14:57 to take a 1-0 lead as time expired in the first period. The Rams out shot the Tigers 5-4 in the period.

Both teams were much more aggressive in the second stanza, trading power plays that gave each side many scoring opportunities but no goals.  The Rams went first, at 4:22 but mustered only one shot.  The Tigers’ man advantage came at 6:50 but to no avail, as junior forward Corey Lamagna and senior forward Dan Leibhart were each turned away. Pine-Richland’s next opportunity was at 11:11, and they registered two shots on this power play.  With the power plays punch less, the Rams again put in a late goal (even strength) at 13:56 to take a 2-0 lead after two periods.  The Rams out shot the Tigers 7-6 in the period.

With a 0-2 deficit to overcome, The Tigers went on the offensive early in the third period.  Senior captain Dan Leibhart punched in a goal at 2:07 to cut the margin of difference to one, and the Tigers then controlled the play for the first half of the period.  The tide turned, however, on a short sequence mid way through the period.  The Tigers were awarded a power play at 6:49, but an inadvertent high sticking call on the Tigers brought on a rare, three-on-three situation.  The Rams capitalized during this time frame with a goal (even strength, three-on three) at 8:45 and then again on their resulting power play at 9:30, moving their lead to 4-1.  The Tigers put up a strong charge the remaining 4 ½ minutes, peppering the Rams goalie with multiple shots, none of which found their way into the net.  The Tigers out shot the Rams 10-5 in the period, and 20-17 on the day, but found themselves on the wrong end of the 4-1 decision.  The Tigers host the Baldwin Highlanders next Sunday, January 10, at 2:45 at the RMU Island Sports Center.

TIGERS TOP PENN-TRAFFORD, 5-3, FOR FIRST WIN

by Dom Gliozzi

The Tigers’ Varsity I In-Line Hockey team closed out the calendar year of play with their first victory of the ’09-’10 season, a hard fought 5-3 win over Penn-Trafford Saturday night at RMU-Island Sports Center.  Led on the evening by senior forward Dan Leibhart’s hat trick, the Tigers jumped to a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period and played an aggressive style in recording their initial PIRHL triumph.

Bursting out of the starting gate, the Tigers controlled the early flow of the game and put the tally on the scoreboard to match the effort as junior forward Corey Lamagna scored even strength at 1:59, the goal officially recorded as unassisted.  The Tigers picked up a power play opportunity at 4:04 and dominated the play, including a Lamagna backhand that the Warrior goalie smothered to keep the score at 1-0.  Shortly after, sophomore forward Anthony Guntrum picked up the rebound from a Leibhart shot and buried the puck for a goal (assist by Leibhart) at the 7:27 mark of the period.  This even strength marker put NA up 2-0.  NA and Penn-Trafford exchanged power play opportunities mid-way through the period with neither team profiting from the man advantages.  Late in the period at 14:08, the Tigers embarked on their third power play.  As time wound down, senior defenseman Ben Sardon sprang Dan Leibhart up the left boards and Leibhart cut across the middle to unleash a blistering slapshot from just inside the blue line, powering past the goalie with only four seconds to spare.  Leibhart’s power play goal at 14:56 ended the first stanza with the Tigers up by a 3-0 count.  The Tigers put seven shots on net while NA senior goalie Austin Naylor handled the four Warrior shots without error.

Jumping back into the contest quickly, Penn-Trafford scored even strength at 1:38 to energize their line-up and then controlled the early part of the second period. Several quality scoring opportunities were turned away by Naylor, and the defensive corps was assisted by strong back checking from the forwards.  PT picked up a power play at 7:35 but couldn’t break through again.  NA picked up power play opportunities of their own (9:58 and 13:24) but couldn’t open up the lead.  On the second man advantage, defenseman Ben Sardon went on an end-to-end rush only to be turned away by the PT goalie at the 14:02 mark.  Again, the Tigers outshot the Warriors seven to four.

The third period proved to be the most exciting of the season to date.  Looking to pad their 3-1 lead, the Tigers were awarded another power play at the start of the period.  Rather than extending the lead, they saw Penn-Trafford score short-handed at the:35 second mark to close to within 3 to 2.  Undaunted, the Tigers answered immediately on the very same power play to regain a two goal advantage.  Dan Leibhart scored his second of the night, an unassisted power play goal at 1:32 on an end-to-end jaunt through the PT lineup to put the Tigers up 4-2.  Shortly after, Penn-Trafford went on a power play of their own at 2:40 but could not put the puck behind Naylor who made several outstanding saves.  The Tigers went into a clock grinding mode, controlling the puck for most of the period while also countering a series of strong offensive pushes by the Warriors.  At 14:08, P-T scored at even strength to climb back to a one goal deficit, down only 4-3 to the Tigers.  With their goalie pulled, the Warriors tried desperately to tie the game.  After a P-T dumping into the offensive zone, senior defenseman Michael Gliozzi chipped the puck from the left corner up the boards to Dan Leibhart, who backhanded a long bouncer from his own blue line into the empty net with 17 seconds to play.  Leibhart’s 3rd goal (and 4th point) of the evening at 14:43 sealed a satisfying 5-3 win for the Tigers.  The Tigers outshot Penn-Trafford eight to six in the period, and 22-14 on the evening.  Both teams had many more scoring opportunities that never made it to the net on blocked shots.

Strong offensive pressure all evening, fueled by exceptional puck control and sharp passing helped the Tigers control the game at the most critical moments.  Forwards Leibhart, Lamagna, Guntrum and senior Nick Schubel provided the offensive firepower.  The defense helped goalie Naylor by playing strong positional hockey in front of the net, blocking numerous shots, and maintaining a strong physical presence in the corners.   Junior Andrew Gordon, Sardon and Gliozzi led the way for the blue line corps.  Coach Dave Gordon thanked his squad for the “holiday present” and the end of the winless streak.  The Tigers resume PIRHL play on Sunday, January 3, at 1:45 PM against the Pine-Richland Rams, at the RMU-Island Sports Center.

TIGERS FALL TO WEST ALLEGHENY, 7-2

by Dom Gliozzi

The Tigers fell to the West Allegheny Indians 7-2 in a spirited PIRHL Varsity I in-line contest Sunday afternoon at the RMU Island Sports Center.  With both teams opening the game exchanging strong scoring opportunities, senior goalie Austin Naylor (#33) made three key saves early at the 1:00 minute marker, the 2:23 mark and again at 5:23 to stymie the Indians.  The Tigers’ best early chance was at 2:28 off the stick of sophomore forward Anthony Guntrum (#22).  Not to be deterred, Guntrum opened the scoring at 6:24, even strength and unassisted, putting NA up 1-0 on a wrist shot after forcing a West Allegheny turnover deep in their own zone.  West Allegheny gained the advantage with strong pressure at the end of the period and scored two even strength goals to close out the period, tallying at 12:44 and 13:52 for a 2-1 lead.  West Allegheny held a 9-5 shots advantage after the first period.

The second period was just underway when junior forward Lloyd Carmack (#2) rang a blistering wrist shot off the very top of the left post at the 30 second mark.  The officials then called two consecutive penalties on the Tigers, at 2:22 and 3:15, opening the way for a rare 4 on 2 manpower advantage which West Allegheny took advantage of at 4:15 to take a 3-1 lead.  The middle portion of the period saw the Tigers control the flow of the game, and the effort paid off.  Senior forward Dan Leibhart (#48) cleanly won a face-off in the offensive zone and drew the puck crisply to the point.  Junior defenseman Andrew Gordon (#60) wasted no time in wristing a “seeing eye” shot from the deep right point which whistled past traffic and the West Allegheny goaltender just underneath the crossbar at 11:23.   With the assist from Leibhart, this even strength goal cut the deficit to 2-3.  West Allegheny responded in quick fashion with two even strength goals of their own at 13:37 and 14:13 to go up 5-2 at the end of the second period.  The Tigers outshot the Indians 5-4 in the period.

The first half of the third period saw both teams exchange power play opportunities which each side killed.  West Allegheny gained another man advantage and produced a power play goal at 7:57.  Another West Allegheny goal, at even strength, closed out the scoring at 9:15.  NA had one last power play opportunity at 13:06, to no avail.  The Indians outshot the Tigers 7-4 in the final period, posting an overall 20-14 advantage in that department.  The Tigers host the Hampton Talbots next Sunday, December 13, at 12:45 PM, at the RMU Island Sports Center.
